Sonoff NSPanel smart thermostat controlling central heating Boiler with miniR4 & WiFi & lightSwitch
In this video, I’ll guide you through the process of installing a Sonoff NSPanel as a wireless thermostat to control your central heating system in the UK(boiler this video is a Worcester bosch greenstar junior 24i) . The NSPanel replaces a traditional two-gang light switch, while retaining the light switch function with two dedicated hardware buttons. It then offers intuitive control with its smart touchscreen interface.
I’ll also show how to connect the Sonoff Mini-R4 to activate your boiler remotely(Mini-R4M, ZBMINI, and others will work). Important: The Mini-R4 is not a volt-free switch and directly switches Live, so it’s not suitable if your boiler requires a volt-free input! Check yo...

I love my trusty old weller soldering gun! It heats up almost instantly. And the best thing about it is that you don't need to buy replacement tips for it, just make your own, for free!!!! I will show you how 😉👍. I also do a teardown, so you can see what's inside and what makes it tick. Just for some extra fun I'll make my own demonstration version, out of a old microwave oven transformer⚡️
Power LED tube directly without putting it into a fixture

In this video, I’ll show you a quick and simple DIY hack for powering a T8 LED tube without using a traditional "florescent/LED replacement" light fixture. Instead of mounting it into a fitting, you can directly solder wires to the pins on one side of the tube to power it! This makes the LED tube itself the light source - no need for a bulky fixture. This approach is cheaper, practical and simi...

Magic Switch Sonoff BASIC-R4 NO-NEUTRAL with 2-way 3-way smart lighting
Просмотров 22 тыс.10 месяцев назад
The new Sonoff BASIC-R4 looks just like the original basic, BUT it has a really cool new feature, called "Magic Switch" mode. This means you can use the Basic-R4 with a ordinary light switch! All that is required to make this work is a wire Link across L1 & L2. This keeps the Basic-R4 powered, no matter what position the switch is in. So the light switch won't cut the power to the Basic-R4. So ...

How beautiful it is is what you have done. I'm very impressed. Now I'm sitting around wondering what to buy to match the components for my voltages and frequency. If there was a little bit of theory with calculating the size of the components I would be entranced. For example, are the resistors before the optocoupler too large or current is too low for optocoupler diode?
This circuit was demonstrated in this video on European "220-240 volt"50 Hz. It should work on 110V in North America mabe just reduce the resistor values and increase the capacitor values. Sonoff now has "magic switch mode" for the Sonoff basic-R4. It makes doing this much simpler and easier. ruclips.net/video/NudSvGNqbAo/видео.html
I asume this will work also with a Shelly Plus 1PM? Anyone tried that?
It probably will work, but the power monitoring function might not work properly. The circuit is designed for LED lighting. You can use "bigger diodes" for more current.
Will it works with shelly 1 mini gen 3?
@@marcinobko3744 yes I believe it will work😉👍. I have not personally tested it but other people in the comments have.
So much faff
@housevideos2024 It can be pretty straightforward or get very complicated, depending on the situation and wiring in your house. I tried to provide a few different options in this video to cater for different needs. There are probably simpler battery operated options, but if you like me, you hate things powered with batteries that need changing, and want them permanently wired in.
If you change your router like I had to yesterday you may as well take all your ultrabrite smart bulbs and plugs and put them in the bin because no matter what you do they won't reconnect to the new router. 3 of us have spent hours trying to get them to connect with no luck
Neon glow lamps are fantastic. You can build a lighthouse out of one (using the circuit from 2:13). I did that over ten years ago, and to this day it continues to flash continuously on 230 V AC. It is important to install a discharge resistor between the capacitor and the glow lamp, otherwise the discharge will be too violent and the glass will be blackened after a short time (sputtering effect).
@@Tag-Traeumer I'm glad you appreciate how cool the simple little neon lamp really is. 👍😉
Hi Guy, you explained it VERY well and clear. Mary thanks for that Bob from Antwerp in Belgium
I would go with the powerbank myself for the wardrobes but I have something similar on my aquarium cabinets but with a manual switch, it looks like I will be adding some of those micro-switches from the bits box into the circuit now.
Sometimes we forget how simple and useful, to use, the humble microswitch can be.😉👍
I have been enjoying your videos and thought I had a solution for my 3 way light switch setup but I have the European wiring in the UK and so have the switched live at the 3rd switch and live at the 1st with only 2 core between 1st and intermediate switch so can’t feed the live to same switch as switched live. Only other option I considered might work was the magic switch basic r4 at light fixture unfortunately. May have to wait until the magic switch function comes in something smaller.
@@beens720 yes! Sonoff "magic switch" would definitely be the easiest option. I did try to tackle this issue before with a custom circuit, but its a bit more complicated. This was before sonoff released magic switch on the new Sonoff basic-R4. ruclips.net/video/9hQFFsBkxaU/видео.html
Nice one mate!👍 Does the Screwdriver Boogie mean that you prefer to do your screwing to music?👹
@tomfromoz8527 Yes! doesn't everyone🤣🤣🤣
A huge thanks to you. I have been struggling for a few years to automate a lot of my 'no neutral' house. I had followed some other instructions, but got hopelessly lost as the wiring in the ceiling rose I started first was all backwards (obviously a previous owner had been playing). Your diagrams and crucially the step by step demonstration not only allowed me to figure out that the wiring was all screwed up and fix it, but then allowed me to fit multiple Mini R4s to 1, 2 and 3 way lighting circuits. I now have a house full of smart lighting that can still be used with the original switches. One word of caution for people, you may find that a dimmer switch screws everything up. It took me quite some head scratching and swearing to work that out. Thanks once again.
I'm glad you figured it all out 👍😉. Unfortunately the wiring can become quite the rat's nest, when people mess around with it.
how nice.. keeping low cost in the real sense
@@vincentc6788 yes! 230Vac relays are more expensive 😉👍
Extremely helpful video. Thank you big time!!!
Glad it helped!
Just taken a dud one apart by Osram. It has a load of micro chips and capacitors galore, but it only has 1/2 the heat absorbing gum it should have, in my opinion. Not fully tested yet, but led itself has no sign of burn spots. Inspiring film that got me to strip one down 😀👍👍👍 I do muck about a bit & have everything at my disposal Big thanks
@AdventuresandLifestyle Yes, the LED gu10 lamp in this video is the older style one using a simple capacitive dropper circuit. This type is rarely used nowadays.
Bought the CT15 which has no bluetooth capabilities but I want to retrofit it because why the hell not. This is incredibly useful thank you!
@FolkeFox some people have reported that a normal transistor like a BC547 is a better choice than the mosfet relay driver I have in the video. Probably because the gate turn on voltage in not quite sufficient in some of the circuits people have built. I was just lucky that it worked in my example.
Can you do this the other way around is the real test 😉
NO! Big flash bang and game over! 😅😂😂😂😂. It does not work in reverse.
I wonder how the shelly bypass allows for an incandescent bulb on the end.
It's not magic, it's just the glitch period!... not rocket science but novel use my good man lol
@amsterdamn4829 It's definitely going to look like which craft to those people that don't understand how it works 😂
You can't use this circuit with an incandescent bulb as the light source correct?
@amsterdamn4829 Yes, you could, but you might need bigger diodes, capacitors, and resistor for the increased current
Could you do this with multiple tubes?
Yes just connect the tubes in parallel, but only put power on the one side (input side)
I want to buy. How, where.
I want to buy
Sonoff and Shelly set the negative GND to L = hot conductor. Between N and Plus of the CPU, 226.7 volts (at 230V) are reduced to get 3.3 volts. This makes it easier to operate the switch at Minus (= L)
Yes I noticed that 🤔👍😉
Single diode half-wave rectification is very common for "low power" electronic devices! Some cheap LED bulbs only have one diode rectification. Even the Sonoff mini-R4 does not have a full bridge rectifier. Many devices use a diode to reduce the speed or power of a device. A hairdryer uses this technique to reduce the fan speed, and sometimes the heating element is being driven with half sinewave aswell! For small transformers it's a big problem, but not for the big transformer from the electric company. The effects are negotiable. Older triac light dimmers, are much worse for the electric company. They also don't like bad power factor. As long as the current draw is only a few milliamps for LED lighting, it's really not a problem at all 😉👍
There are three types of LED bulb drivers. PWM, resistor and capacitor combination, constant current regulator.. This method probably won't work on PWM and resistor and capacitor combination drives, but it will work on a constant current regulator drive. Economical LED bulbs mostly use constant current regulator drivers. Integrators such as BP5131 can be given as an example. There is not much difference between the working principle of these drivers and a resistor. Both limit the current, but the regulator is more efficient. Connecting a series capacitor to the LED bulb will only further reduce the current and the brightness of the LED bulb will decrease even more. it is safe for leds and driver
@@alpozdemir7898 the types of mains voltage LED interal lamp drivers I know of, is "capacitor dropper" , "SMPS/ buck converter" , and "linear current regulation". And the reason I used a capacitor to drop the voltage/current, is because its more efficient than burning up heat in a resistor dropper, but for very low current a resistor is not really a problem. Pwm is usually used for dimming LEDs from lower DC voltages or inside smart bulbs. Lower dropping current/voltage to a led bulb should be fine with a resistor or a capacitor. It kind of works because you reach the point where the driver almost "drops out" and the LEDs are dimmer.
@@MyProjectBoxChannel Thank you for your answer, what you said is completely true, the companies that produce these products do not want us to know the truth, it is more profitable to sell much more expensive dimmable bulbs
Thanks to you, I reached my goal and it was very cheap. Thank you for the video.
Today, the idea of applying a similar method came to my mind, I have never watched this video you posted before, but I used a 10kiloohm resistor instead of a capacitor, I didn't know it was possible while implementing this project, but it worked, bingo👍, so a common conclusion can be reached by thinking logically.
What if I don't have 3 terminals in a switch?
Just replace it with one that has the 3 terminals. They are not expensive😉👍
Only use a half wave of the sine for lighting. Your electricity supplier will be annoyed. This gives a direct current component in the domestic power transformer. As a result, it will not only hum loudly, but will also lose performance.
You could remove one yellow-green wire on both sides. Slide a blue tube over it and connect it with N. Connecting both hot cables would not be done in continental Europe. There the cables always branch out without being brought back together at the end. So I would have just used one hot wire and insulated the other hot wire.
I forgot, in England the PE with a reduced cross-section is used. But you have two hot conductors, you only need one. Then convert one hot conductor to the N.
@@jensschroder8214 yes! I actually mentioned that in the video, that I could of sleeved the one brown/Hot wires, to blue/neutral. Unfortunately in the UK, we are not allowed to sleeve green/yellow wires with blue sleeving. I just wanted to show different options including "no-neutral". There are many ways the double light switches could be wired in people's houses
Do you know how to make this work with a North-American light switch?
@@goldbug007 it's exactly the same, but you need to use what you guys call a 3-way switch, and link the two "traveler terminals" together with a wire link. So don't use a "single pole" /On-Off switch. We tend to use the "3-way type" for every type of switching situation.
@ thanks for the quick response. I will try your trick.
that aint real right?
Yes it's real! I use this home made liquid flux all the time 😉👍
Can this be powered directly by a 12v battery?.
Since the last comment i made, i did multiple tries and the circuit works. Thanks alot for your videos. However i am stuck with one problem in the next room that shares the same neutral wire connected with the circuit but not the same switch. I had the capacitor, the two diode and resistor circuit connected up with the light with the same exact copy of the circuit as the lastroom that works. As i turn the main power supply back on. The switch lights up and blink for pairing. As the paring and updating firmware completed i turned the light on with ewelink apps. The resistor blew up again. I check and recheck again with new circuit using multimeter there are no short circuit. I did the second tried but the resistor blew up again. I did this with 3 new circuit and ran out of resistor. It all resulting with the resistor blew up. If you have some feedback please let me know what i did wrong. Thank you in advance
It puzzled me as the switchman M5-1c-86w would turn on and working as normal but can not switch on the lights using physical button or using ewelink apps the resistor would blew up

I've done something similar to an oil fired boiler, basically I discovered that I did not have thermal cut offs installed so I added sonoff relays & temperature monitoring to install my own
Doesn't work, i tried using 10uf/400v capasitor, 1N4007 diode and 10 OHM(1W) mo carbon film resistor. I switch on the power supply the bulb is blinking. As i tried to switch on and off switchMan m5-1C-86w the resistor blew up and the power automatic tripped
Trust me it does work and so many people have tried it. It's likely one (or more) diodes could be in the wrong polarity. And now some of them will probably be damaged(hopefully the M5 is still OK). In a different video I use some "safety current limiting" to test the circuit first, in the form of a inline, old school incandescent light bulb. This acts like a automatic safety fuse/current limit. It will stop you destroying components while you test the circuit. Check out this video. ruclips.net/video/oBR5O391m_c/видео.html at this time stamp 12:56
@@MyProjectBoxChannel thank you so much for your feedback will try and check the diode condition as you mentioned
Does this not need to be done by a licensed electrician in the UK?
@@calvinbrowne2126 you are actually aloud to do some basic electrical work your self😉👍. For example: You can replace light switches and sockets, ceiling lights. You can even move or extend wires to move a socket. You can install a fused spur to add a additional socket outlet. You are aloud to repair damaged wiring. Things you are not allowed to do your self: You can not install a brand new circuit connected to the consumer unit/fuse box, that work needs to be certified. So I think it's OK to replace a thermostat for your boiler, and replace a light switch with the NSpanel. You are not working inside the boiler, or on the gas supply, so you don't have to be "gas safe" registered. You should however never work on electrics, if you not confident you can do it safely!
That this question even needs to be raised speaks volumes about how oppressive and overreaching the UK government has become.
@martontichi8611 I'm not resident in the UK. I was merely interested in the situation there.
@@martontichi8611I must admit I kind of agree with you. For me it's my house my business, my rules. As long as it's safe 😉👍
@MyProjectBoxChannel yeah. I'm of a similar thinking. With caveats. So, when you sell, I'm OK with having to supply a certificate from a professional for example. And your insurance contract might say something. But then, these rules are normally not aimed at people who understand that live neutral matter, even if it's AC. And I'm renting now, which means I have to abide by the law (and/because my rental contract) in this jurisdiction. Keep up the interesting stuff!
Its not to protect us from ourselves, its to protect the manufacturer from the uneducated opening products still under warranty, so they don't get inside, damage it & then try a warranty claim when the person may have broken it opening it up.
I just bought the newest one Hp2852E! Having so much trouble. When did these become so difficult. Several hours have gone by and I’m still unable to connect it to my laptop for wireless connection. It’s going back to walmart
Would this work if the light is daisy chained to other light bulbs? Would every bulb need a diode set and capacitor?
@kainabel2481 as long as you put the diodes/bypass at the start of the chain, in-line with the supply feeding it it should work fine. I would recommend using bigger diodes for more current capability. I have a newer circuit in this video ruclips.net/video/mznx0xoF8Ck/видео.html
I’ve set the basic r4 with a Schneider switch, but I think that the delay is so small that it doesn’t trigger all the time from the switch itself, and so it needs a bigger delay. Do you have any recommendations for that? I’m also planning to add another one for a 3 gang setup but with the same switch so I’m curious if the same would happen. Great video though
The only thing I can recommend is to try a different light switch. The only switches that didn't work for me, is the ones that didn't have a decisive click. It doesn't have to be an expensive light switch, just one that works well with the sonoff. It would have been nice if sonoff provided an adjustment in the software. for the delay. I know some people that have made custom firmware for it, have created this option.
I use ethanol and works same as isopropil
@@LSB5580 good to know, I'll give it a try 😉
I would add a strong caution to not use this on any transformer loads like older 12v down-lights. The transformer will magnetize and overheat. I also think that a fuse lower than 1A should not be optional. The 1N4007 diode is rated at 1A and your circuit breaker normally needs 10A to trip.
The circuit is "fused" with a dedicated special "fusible resistor". This circuit was specifically designed for LED lamps or maybe florescent lighting with the newer electronic ballasts. Basically it needs to withstand a "DC voltage". Transformers dont work on DC. I have a updated circuit using 10Amp diodes(10A10) which are capable of withstanding Surge Currents 300 amps for a brief period. So in "my tests" survive a circuit breaker tripping on a short-circuit fault. Here is a video for the newer version ruclips.net/video/mznx0xoF8Ck/видео.html I'm constantly trying to improve my circuits so will be making a updated video with some improvements.
Mine doesnt even turn on when i flick the switch :/

A switch Live input on S2 works on the mini-R2 only! The original sonoff mini requires a "volt-free" input from a switch on both s1 and s2. The older mini is different!!!
Ok
