I believe the original tips are brass not cooper but because the circuit is an induction coil you can even use steel if you want a more durable tip even if steel have a more difficult way to apply the thin cure to the tip and need a wet cellulose sponge to clean, I know how to make my own flux and paste, how to make etching solution and cold thinning for the PCB mask and i even go as far as DIY my soldering irons if necessary. things that people from developed countries not need to do and can afford to buy.

Like the hands free idea with foot switch and almost instant heat of these irons. I have one of these soldering irons buried somewhere in my garage which I will definitely dig out and start using.

Could you tin the copper wire to increase the life expectancy? I imagine that the solder would be slower to corrode than bare copper.

Just nickel plate them, it's easy...!

Could you put up a link to the footswitch please? If you wired it for your purposes, it would be great to see that diagram too. Thank you.
My weller is old too, but it's black rather than red.

So the footswitch is just a extention cord. ( plug and socket at each end) The footswitch just goes in between somewhere in the middle of the cord. The footswitch just brakes the Hot wire ( Live wire ) and the neutral is unbroken/ straight through. So you just cut the Live/Hot and connect the two separate wires to the "common" and "normaly open" terminals inside the footswitch. You obviously need to keep the trigger pressed on the gun some how. Just have a look on ebay for a cheap foot-switch.

@MyProjectBoxChannel Ahh, yes simple now you have explained it. My little brain was having trouble picturing it and electrics isn't my trade, so always like confirmation before doing anything electrical. Thank you.

I need to get that foot switch.
I take it any solder guns like this works the same way in general regardless of the brand?

@@thebatu89 yes, basically if is a transformer type soldering gun.😉👍

That may be so. But I've never seen that one nor had it presented to me in the algorithms. This one however was presented to me. So far from being boring, it is very useful. Maybe you're the boring one for taking the time to be negative ...yawn.....
