Ski Patrol Life
США
Добавлен 16 ноя 2021
This channel captures my experience on the Ski Patrol of Brian Head Resort in southern Utah. I am on my seventh season on Ski Patrol, things have changed quite a bit over the years as far as procedures and even how we are treated by our guests.
If you've ever wondered what the day to day life of a Ski Patroller is like, this will give you an idea of what to expect. I go over our training, how to handle difficult weather, challenging terrain, challenging resort guests, injuries, what skills and training are required, and many other subjects.
I also will give a report on what current conditions are like as often as possible. If you have any questions please let me know. Have fun sliding!

Today was about as icy as I have ever seen it since 2014 when I began working there. My daughter and I headed up regardless of the lackluster conditions and honestly still had a great time. I am slowly starting to figure out how to safely ride my new Lenz Sport Recon ski bike, I really have to trust the inside edges - that doesn't always work out well unfortunately...

This was my first day ever riding the new Lenz Sport Recon ski bike. I had never ridden a ski bike prior to this day, and I was definitely nervous. How hard is it to learn to ride a ski bike? How does a ski bike work for doing the job of Ski Patrol? How does a ski bike work when you have multiple ligament tears in your knee? Are ski bikes fun? These questions will be answered in this video. #le...

@@awright1035 I actually do plan on really testing my ski bike skills tomorrow while working Patrol, I'll film the carnage.
What a gorgeous day up there!! Thx for sharin' Shannon ;) My place is only a few miles NE from Brainhead slopes, so I love seein' the snow fly * * * !! HAPPY for your Ski-bike progress
@@began4939 It was a pretty day, so nice.
Brian Head!
@@BubbaBubs1 Yep!
legendary.
Ski Biking is indeed legendary fun, I went up there again today for another couple hours of shred time, I loved it!
Kinda sucks we don't get to see you riding it =/
I will be there later today and for most of this coming Friday, till about 2pm.
Did I see you and a couple buddys ripping the pow today? Saw a few of those bikes going down Navajo again
@@PurpMiat Yep, that was us. They came down from SLC and Colorado to help me learn how to ride a ski bike properly - I was that bad! After one full run of instructions I was 97% better, the good fresh snow definitely helped as well. Did you guys have fun?
Walter white?
@@RAPIDFIRE2K Hah yes, after his career as a teacher then drug lord, he became a Ski Patroller in southern Utah. Not a lot of people know that. 😂
West Coast icy ;)
@@mybadvideos True, icy by west coast standards. I once went snowboarding in Maryland while it was raining - that was icy. 😂
I'm beginning to think Navajo is actually the punishment.
@@matthewreynolds2208 Hah! You are correct, it is a bit of a punishment for people that injure themselves and can't slide on the bigger side of the mountain.
Shredding on your butt...?? LMAO ;) Glad you're doing better man !! Is that actually better for your knee??
That thing is wild. It carries speed well. I bet you got plenty of looks. Figure out a way to hook up some ski breaks to it.
@@LivinUTOutdoors Well, if I can learn to trust the inside edges with both feet up on the pegs I'll be able brake better and crash less. 😂
“i hate peach pudding” “is that eve-“ legend the cuts are goated. hope you are having a good day on the hill out there. 🥶👍🏾
@@nathanyellll Thanks man, I'm having a great day. It looks like we might get three days of snow this coming weekend - I'm on it.
@ yes we might over here in big bear. 💕💕 La niña season among us
@nathanyellll La Niña is painful!
I'm catching up on your videos legend. Now looking to ski Brighton.
@@nathanyellll Brighton is one of my favorite resorts, so much variety of terrain. I haven't been there in quite a few years though. Have fun!
Nice to see you back on the snow sliding! Thats the important thing. The rest will come naturally. Enjoy!
It was so good to be back on the mountain and sliding around - even if it was something very new.
Welcome to skibike addiction! You did great, rely more on your legs weight pushing into the inside edge of the ski and keep your feet on the pedals. If you use your inside leg for "balancing" you are putting your weight on outside leg and not enough weight on the inside edge to actually break. It's a false sensation that you are actually helping by putting the inside foot down, but in reality you are losing the edge control. Also use the front ski to start your turns and then right away counter-steer into the next turn. Greetings from up north from Brighton :)
Gotcha, I figured I was doing it wrong at least on the ice/hard pack, it was very counter intuitive to what I do while mountain biking. I suppose I need to think of it more like skiing/snowboarding edge control eh? Are you the guy with the super awesome Brighton ski bike videos with big drops in powder and whatnot? As far as addiction goes, I do find myself thinking about ski biking a lot, I plan on going this Friday and calling in sick if and when it ever snows again here. I appreciate your input!
It’s my second season on a ski bike and it’s great to see you on a bike this season. Remember the snow is lava so ride it like a mono ski with handlebars. Keep your feet up. It’s a little tough when icy since you only have a single edge. Fast learning curve. You were doing great on your first day.
@@clas2002 Thank you for the input, I definitely haven't built up the trust in the uphill edge that I need just yet - at least not in the icy areas. It was amazing though in the rough stuff and powder! What kind of ski bike do you have?
@ I ride an original TNGNT carve, but I’m trying to demo a Lenz recon this week before I pull the trigger. I love seeing people try ski biking and my little niche of snow sports growing.
@clas2002 Nice, our local ski shop rents the Tngnt bikes, they seem to do really well. I'd like to hear your thoughts between the two machines after you ride the Recon.
legend
legendary. I'm getting into the industry from ground zero but yet I am going full speed at it.
@@nathanyellll Awesome, that's the way to do it. I started at Brian Head as Guest Services, it was a fun job.
Glad to see you had a great time help for your first time. There is a great video on learning ski bike techniques on RUclips, "how to ski bike first five runs". I sometimes find it hard to resist putting weight your down hill leg.
@@scottmoore8854 Funny you mentioned that video, I watched it no less than five times - and I still felt the need to put that inside leg out. It was super easy to ride where the snow was softer and I had more bite. That day was like riding a mountain bike on very hard packed flat corners. Still super fun though, I reeeeally liked it when I was out in the trees or on a bermed trail.
Wear a chest protector. It makes you feel safer at the least. I forgot mine the other day and felt naked while on the slopes.
@@scottmoore8854 Yeah, that makes sense, I always were one when I'm down hilling or riding moto.
Just found your channel. Looks like you're new to ski biking. I hope You get a camera setup where you can make some good inspirational videos as you're learning. 👍
I did actually film everything from my first day of ski biking while on Ski Patrol this past Friday. I am currently editing the footage as we speak. I had a lot of fun, i was shocked by how fast it is, I didn't feel super secure in the hard packed snow/ice we had though. Time and experience will help.
looks awesome! I demo'ed a similar snow bike out east and it was a blast! Its a great alternative for Patrollers with bum knees. Have fun man! Watch the OTB's!
That's cool! An OTB onto our super hard snow would hurt - badly - I'm going to try to avoid that. I did slide out a few times because of ice but nothing super painful. They will be in the video I'm currently editing. I did appreciate being able to get on the mountain despite my knee, that was awesome.
Goal achieved! On snow is on snow!
How's the knee? I'm hoping you guys finally get some storms down there soon!
Still torn up but pretty functional, skiing and snowboarding are not viable choices currently. I will be getting the surgery done next week, I am not sure what my exact recovery time will be, hopefully short!
Hope to see it soon
@@awright1035 I was up there today, the ski bike is so fast! I filmed a bunch of the riding, I'll get that edited this weekend at some point.
Baddest biker on the mountain
@@ErikAnderson-b7k Maybe the scaredest mountain biker on the mountain. 😂
Just remember to switch your leg weight opposite of skiing and you'll be fine. And respect the generosity of gravity! 😬
@@scottmoore8854 It's going to take some time for me to trust the inner edges of the bike's skis, I think a less hard packed/icy day will help. That being said, when I was able to go cross country jumping things and carving berms that were buried, was soooo much fun! What kind of ski bike do you have?

Hey, just curious as to the process to becoming ski patrol. Live down in Cedar and would love to have something to do over the weekend as I'm FT during the week. Love the videos!
@@bigdan8461 The first thing is that you'll need medical training, a lot of our patrollers are either Wilderness Outdoor First Responders, EMT's, Paramedics, ER Nurses, etc. Secondly you need to be able to ski or snowboard at an advanced intermediate to expert level as we need to be able to access any part of the mountain. Being in good physical condition is pretty key as well, toboggans, gear, patients, can be heavy. Beyond all of that, being able to be a good team member is very important. If you are interested, our Ski Patrol Director is a gentleman named Andy and his assistant is Kenadee. You could either call the resort and ask for them or better yet swing by the Ski Patrol room at Giant Steps and speak with them personally. Let me know what other questions you may have.
@ Thank you! I have WFR course scheduled in March! I will definitely have to stop by and talk to them! Would definitely be interested in doing something over the summer if they have patrol then.
@@bigdan8461 That's awesome, that is a good course, especially for what we do. We do have Bike Patrol through the summer but really it isn't much like Ski Patrol. If you watch a couple of my Bike Patrol videos you'll see what I mean - much lower tempo.
Im currently in the basic skills half of training. Can't wait for the toboggan section!!!
@@Bobblehead09 That's awesome! You'll love pulling a toboggan, it is one of my favorite things on Ski Patrol. How's training going for you? Where are you at?
@ trainings going great… I love the people and job. I’m at mountain creek in Vernon NJ so snow isn’t the best but hey at least I’m skiing.
@Bobblehead09 That's awesome, there really is not to many jobs like this, I'm happy for you. NJ is beautiful, I used to surf up there when I was in the Marine Corps in D.C. It's rad that you are able to ski. How long is your training before you get officially certified?
@ I’m not even old enough to be in the military LOL. Thank you for your service. I finish OET in march but I also have to finish a check list full of other things like mountain protocol, opening, closing, etc. so hopefully in march but who knows…
