Rose Garden Tour late September | David Austin Roses | Kordes Roses | Rose Suckers
I just got back from holiday and here we have a wander around the garden in late September.
I don’t usually get rose suckers, in fact I don’t think I’ve had any!
But here I have one coming up and one of the few things I remember my dad teaching me is to try and pull them out cleanly from the socket at which it’s attached to the root.
Would probably help by carefully loosening the soil a little around the sucker to assist it pop out.

Best Performing Rose of 2024 | Rose Garden Tour | David Austin Roses | Kordes Roses

Well here is my video, best performing rose of 2024. Not a top ten as such but there was a standout winner again this year, a winner which I know will surprise many of you. Certainly surprised me. The winning rose had the best repeat in my entire garden, very healthy and this year fragrant. It also has a flower I happen to like a lot. What else can you ask for. The latter part of the video you ...

Well something completely different today. In this video I try some storytelling. I’m unsure if it will work and perhaps not the best story to start of with! But I’m giving it a go. It’s a story about someone but perhaps it’s also a story about ourselves and how we see things. I have many many stories, some of which have a much happier ending and it’s possibly something I will introduce occasio...

How I’m Reducing the Wait Between Flushes | Rose Garden Tour | David Austin Roses

Taking cut flowers from my roses has always been something I’ve loathed to do. I prefer to leave my flowers in the garden regardless of weather and I leave the flowers on the roses until they need deadheading. However there is a downside to this and that is the time gap between flushes. Several of my roses will be effectively naked of colour for some time awaiting second flush. It’s clear the r...

First of all I am not claiming to be an expert. But over the last few years I have learnt a few things, and I will continue to learn. One of the things that I see often is young roses needing a drink. It’s very difficult to explain and a complex issue involving many factors. In this video I try and show you something that I forced onto one of my roses. Deliberately dehydrating it. Then showing ...

    8:56 And underplant them all with grape hyacinths and/or crocuses because crocuses bloom so early, it's quite a cheerful sight after a long, dreary winter, and they make the honeybees happy. No more exquisite, old, romantic Victorian cabbage form than Earth Angel. I really should have planted mine in a massive pot because even with heavy winter covering she gets small dead, black areas on the stems that increase in size. Rose plants are much more robust in soil in the ground with their roots chasing earth worm tunnels than they are in pots, AND her exquisite, strong old rose scent with definite grapefruit undertones. 9:55 Peat with either perlite of vermiculite is far, far superior to the coconut coir that is difficult to avoid nowdays, the coconut fiber stuff is horrible. Peat is basically compost, decayed until there is nothing remaining for funguses to thrive on. Our ancestors gre roses with no peat, but that made containers terribly heavy and root penetration was much more difficult for the plant. 11:29 Ilike your channel better, I like learning from others, I do listen to music, but not with gardening videos, your discussions are much more informative than music would be. Thank you for the show and tell. In my mind's eye, I already see and smell your rose bed 8 long months from now. Ralph in Ohio

    Dear Jay, I was keen to hear your experience on the Delightful Parfuma , as I have one in a pot. Last year it produced a lot of buds, but sadly most of the buds never opened properly and I had to prune them off. The leaves were not diseased, so I’m not sure what caused this issue with the buds ( some of which were large ) refusing to open ? Any ideas, suggestions ? We did get quite a bit of Spring rain at the time, from memory. But my other roses seemed to handle the rain without the bids getting damaged. Would I need to use a fungicide early on, ie just as the new buds are taking shape in Spring ? ( in case it’s some fungus that’s ruining the buds ) Would love to hear your opinion. Thanks

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay 25 дней назад

      Hi there, yes I had similar issues. I’m sure I’ve spoken about this in the past about delightful Parfuma. It took 2, I think even 3 years before I saw a successful flower from delightful Parfuma. They all failed for me exactly like you said. Very strange. What makes it stranger was the fact I’ve seen it in a Nursary growing in the ground successfully with bolt upright flowers and about 30 of them. All looking excellent. So mine did take time before it started behaving. But I’m unsure it does well in wet weather, it’s got a high petal count and very dense and heavy flowers I’m still not sure it will do well in the rain. But very powerful scent. Mine isn’t being moved I’m keeping mine. But it has taken time.

    • @foxx441
      @foxx441 25 дней назад

      @@Jay_Jay Ok. And so do you think that perhaps their getting rained on in the first few years was the culprit? I just can’t put it down to any other variable…having said that, it does seem strange that if excess water on the buds does cause this issue then this type of cup rose would always be vulnerable regardless of how many years you’d had it…?

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay 25 дней назад

      @@foxx441 I’m not sure. Like I said I saw a whole bunch of these roses doing extremely well in a rose Nursary that were young and waiting to be pulled up for sale. That said I do know that some roses it takes a little while for some roses to strengthen up even against the rain. Wedding piano for instance. That rose when I first got it was useless in wet weather. Similar sort of dense packed petals. Now it does very well indeed in the rain. Delightful Parfuma I had same issue as you. All buds failed to open. Very frustrating I know. I don’t think delightful Parfuma will be as rain tolerant as wedding piano but now at least I’m seeing (finally) the flowers open as they should. But for me at least it took some time.

      @foxx441 25 дней назад

      @@Jay_Jay Ok, Thankyou. I think, to be safe, I’ll have to put it under cover when it’s raining…don’t want to lose 90% of the buds as happened last year. 😞

    0:17 Root stock, perhaps rosa multiflora, save it, graft on it March next year while dormant, then dig it out when established. Grafting is easy, razor sharp knife, angle cut on rootstock and scion rubber band them together and plaster a mix of beeswax and pine tar around it. Do it while the plant is asleep, and it wll never know what happened and they shall bloom happily ever after. 2:56 You Brother Cadfael has those lovely cabbage roses reminiscent of 1890s greeting cards that I love. If I remember correctly, long ago I decided against it because of low petal count, I love centifolias stuffed to the gills with petals. Yes, tomorrow is autumn equinox, alas, our plants slow down tremendously with less than 12 hours of light per day. Wow! Souhern France in April, be sure to get to the violet festival at Grasse. There is ONE French family still there growing Parma violets, all others have sold out to the millionaires. Parma violets are so sublime, my heart "melts" with joy at their sight and scent. Long ago there were hundreds of violet growers there. Thank you Jay for the show and tell from your far distant shores! Ralph in Ohio. A final thought regarding the sucker, my 50+ years of gardening/beekeeping has taught me to, as much as possible to work WITH nature, not against it. Harness it's vigor and force to direct it's efforts and vitality into a pleasing conclusion. Let me think, what could you graft onto those suckers??? Perhaps something from southern France???? LOL!

  • @vintagelady1
    @vintagelady1 27 дней назад

    Curse the suckers!! That's why I prefer own root---no suckers! Grrrr! My suckers usually come from under the graft right next to it so you can't tell which is sucker & which is good; my experience is that once suckers start, that vigorous rootstock just keeps sending them up & starving the real rose. But if grafted is the only way to get the rose you want.. Your garden looks quite nice for how late it is in the season---your Cadfael is stellar., Rose Elizabeth too, & of course the Lady of Shalot. For any of your fans in the U.S., David Austin has a LOT of roses restocked that haven't been around for a while, including Brother Cadfael, and others. I want to thank you for showing how fabulous your Olivia Rose was doing in your last few videos---I'd taken your advice this summer & got me one & she is a champion bloomer! I can't believe summer is over and there won't be many more flowers---where did the time go? Your van looks lovely & comfy, just right for a trip to France!
