  • Well I had to try and capture some of my Parfuma collection of roses before they went over. As I mention in the video, this year some of them seem to be going over prematurely. I’m hoping as temps rise they will start to do better as the season goes on.

      Hi there, yes I’m certain if it were hotter the kordes would be doing very well. And the DA perhaps not so much as they are now. But each season I guess have to be different to make it interesting. This year certainly so far at least, looks to be benefiting the DA.

    Geez I’d be happy if my roses lasted two or three days! It’s so hot here in Florida that they last about a day. The sun is so intense here in summer. Thank god I’ll have roses most of the year as winter months are much lower and the sun less intense. Sometimes I wonder how things keep flowering that long😎👍❤️ Wow Amadeus rose is gorgeous!!❤️ ugh I want wedding piano ❤️

      Hi there. Yes we can hope things will get better for next flush when things get warmer. I hope they do at least! :) But I have to say I haven’t noticed this issue with the David Austin roses I have. For me they are budding as usual. But best of luck with your roses for the rest of the year. ;)

Thanks again for the lovely tour, looking forward to the Kordes video, take care.

    All looking good to me Jay Jay. Roses, roses and.............more roses. Interesting how one year varies to another. Also how nature, usually, has a habbit of catching up and sorting things out. I think you should welcome the rabbits into your garden every year, they seem to have done a good pruning job. No?? I'll have to check on that other Eden Rose that I've mentioned to see how it's doing this year. My roses don't like all this heat and dry weather. How much watering do you have to do apart from the pots? Good luck with your next video. P.

      @Jay_Jay  27 дней назад

      Hi and yes it’s sad. Usually roses that stay in bud for a long time often mean they have good duration. They are building Stength. But this is a vulnerable time and I think this year they stayed in bud for too long possibly.

  • @rareandwonderfull
    @rareandwonderfull 28 дней назад +2

    Yes, here in Ohio, while the weather was cold, the buds opened agonizingly slow, but then the temperatures went up to between 90 and 95 degrees fahrenheit for more than an entire week and everything speeded up.
    4:34 Oh yes, my first 30 years gardening, I was spontaneous, everything together with no regard to color, but now, especially with spring bulbs, I premeditatedly coordinate colors, and for me, that is 90% of the various colors are what I call the "theme" colors, in sync with each other, and 10% is an accent color out of sync with the other colors to grab the viewer's eye. For example, 90% pink and red tulips with 10 % strong canary yellow, and just as lanscape painters guide the viewers eye towards whatever the artist wishes to emphasize, we too can use sparing amounts of accent colors in the garden to draw the eye towards whatever we may wish to emphasize, it may be a birdbath, a garden sculpture, garden seat, whatever. All that said though, the charm of the English cottage garden is it's natural, seemingly unplanned composition, however, a proper cottage garden is well thought out, but looks natural. In my opinion, a proper English cottage garden warms my heart to see moreso than the gardens of grand estates. 6:33 The Bliss Parfuma glows, as if a lantern is inside of the blooms! 8:12 Alas! First Crush is about to get crushed, or as Vita Sackville West would say "hoicked" 😆😆 8:42 Wellenspiel, Nice! Stuffed to the gills with petals, I love high petal count, nice pink also. 10:06 I suspect also that excessive rain/fog/atmospheric moisture also prevents them opening. It's as if dry air is needed to dry and therefore shrink the outer petals in order to pull away and allow inner petals to open up, globular roses being the worst in this matter. But I LOVE GLOBULAR, high petal count roses. I being an antiquarian call them Victorian, Redoute, cabbage form, those who have no interest in the past would call the form a "throwback".
    11:58 I may be wrong, but I sense that David Austin shies away from the "danger zone", the danger zone being poor performance that will disgust customers and also avoiding roses that will not bloom until after the second year, whereas Kordes is all out infatuation with soul meltingly beautiful form. My Paschmina Verands is one example of a Kordes rose that quickly fell out of favor with the public because in prolonged wet weather, it's buds will not open. For that reason, I keep her in a massive pot, if rain is excessive, she goes under the roof. Same with Earth Angel/Herzegovina Christiana, excessive wet weather, her flowers will not open. Connoisseur roses,for those willing to work with troubles, not roses for the general public. 12:26 Amadeus, gorgeous beyond words, that would not happen in Ohio, she would freeze down to about 3 feet or lower above the ground. 14:02 Wedding Piano, now THAT is over the top gorgeous. I generally have no interest in white, too much like a blank sheet of paper, but HERE, the white via shading, raking light shows the romantic form most gorgeously and that faint tinge of green, like in Paschmina, that seems to show up in Kordes roses somewhat often, I wonder what ancestor imparts that pale green blush? Long lasting flowers, just like Paschmina, some ancestor that I am sure that Kordes will not reveal imparts that pale green wash and longevity of flowers. With Paschmina, the blooms eventaully dry up, tuen brown and they are still hanging on, finally I trim them off, but fascinating though. I am sure that bright overcast shows the green much better than full sunshine. On my computer, the green is showing to perfection.
    Alas! I have writtten another "chapter" for a book, had no plan to do so. Thank you For the gorgeous show and tell!
    Ralph in Ohio.

Mine in this crazy heat and dryness are opening and fading within one day sadly. I'm glad you said that you can grow a climber rose as a shrub rose in a pot. Hey jay - i am surprised to not see Perfume Passion which is one of the best Kordes roses , strong fragrance , and prolific bloomer. - the raspberry cupcake for me doesn't do well pest wise i had to dispose of mine due to relentless spidermite infestation to un-manageable levels (no other kordes was affected like raspberry cupcake was and was constantly yellow foliage due to mites). Fur Elise was only released in australia this season I regret not preordering it now after seeing your video. Dark Desire does extremely well in my climate - being much hotter than germany we have many 38 - 42 degrees celcious and it exploded at least 2 meters of growth in the season and its flowers are climate proof -if only dark desire had less thorns it certain draws blood.

    I see the green on Wedding Piano, wish I could get one but not in the U.S. I am shocked to hear that you can't make the magic happen for Kordes---I thought you were Wizard of All! LOL! All I expect to see is whatever roses were there that you saw. While the gardens are lovely at D.A., it just isn't something I can have at my house unless I win the lottery & take on a staff of lanscapers, rose experts & forest management experts (this would be nice but quite miraculous, as I do not play the lottery). But one or 2 beautiful roses I can get, & most Kordes roses can be found here in the states. So do not agonaize over the Kordes video, just be sure it starts w/ your "lovely viewer" & we shall all be content.

  • @nikkonch
    @nikkonch 29 дней назад +1

    Sorry that your Parfuma roses have been disappointing with their flowering - is it connected with the recent short-lived heatwave? I noticed that the roses on my Alpine Sunset have developed much faster than I expected or hoped over the past week. But generally the DA roses don't seem to have been affected in the same way, and in addition the DA roses seem to have performed better than usual over the past month with the cooler temperatures - even my wife has commented on that. Your Amadeus is looking eye-sockingly amazing, and the Piano Wedding is looking great (just a pity you seem to have put a green filter on your lens while filming them - that was rather careless Jay Jay). I seem to have read somewhere that Bonica is widely planted in parks (probably in the US) because it is prolific and bullet-proof - and I can certainly see why, looking at your example. The Queen of Sweden just doesn't seem to want to be held back, does she? I was thinking of cutting mine back drastically too, to keep it in check, but that's clearly not going to work. Mind you, your Gabriel Oak is competing on the height front - and I am grateful my two are happy to be medium height. I went to two garden centres today - the first had lots of black-spot and hardly any flowers, so that almost put me off growing roses. The second had lots of healthy roses with flowers - my wife and I both loved the look and scent of Wollerton Old Hall, but that's not the climber I want, and we saw Bring Me Sunshine and Ozeana, which are on my list of possibles, but unfortunately they did not have convincing enough examples to clinch a deal. Don't beat yourself up about the Kordes video - whatever you can show will be appreciated - you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear as they say.

    • @Jay_Jay

      Hi nik yes I suspect the weather, this won’t be a vintage year again. But I guess if every year was a vintage it would become boring. That said and as you point out the David Austin roses are flying. Very healthy in my garden and just demon flowering. The cooler weather so far definitely helping them from bleaching.
      Yes I see the black spot in the garden centres, it’s coming to all of us I’m sure. I have some creeping on but has to be expected with a couple of roses I have that are spreading it.
      You saw a potted ozeana? That’s interesting. You didn’t like?

    I have 4 year old Amadeus grafted is yours grafted or own root? Yours is looking fantastic. This year mine is looking a little sad, but that could be due to it being in a pot. Will be repotting it into a much larger pot in autumn.

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  28 дней назад

      Hi there. Mine is grafted. Yes if yours has been in a pot for 4 years you will know there will be zero nutrients remaining in that pot other than what you are feeding the rose. It will be interesting to see the rootball when you unpot it. My guess is if you potted it in rich compost type matter you will see lots of hair like root. If you used a mix with heavier Earth type top soil you will see bigger roots in addition to the hair like roots. This is why whenever I pot a rose now I always use at least 50 percent decent quality garden Earth. Best of luck and I hope he sings for you next year.

    Hi Jay, I do have a first crush at home-half sun location. I didn’t count how many days the flower stays but it’s okay 👌. Constance Mozart(first crush) has very strong stems and takes a lot of space. Is the parfuma rose corner too less direct sunlight? Because when I look at the plants (not only the flower), they are not big enough. The new branches are thin.

      Hi hina, where I have first crush that gets direct sun from 5am until 1pm. It’s in a good sunny position. It’s waiting on second flush. Summer romance towards the road gets it a little later but has it later in the afternoon also. It’s only right near the road that those last couple of roses start to get affected by lack of sun because of the tree. I don’t think the others have lack of sunshine hours. Maybe something else but I don’t think lack of sun especially towards the house.

      Then your first crush has much more sunlight than mine! Mine is behind the house. It should be shining 😮…this is strange…by the way, will you get the Hansestadt Rostock rose for your garden? I have a feeling you fell in love with it 😂 😂 (Rostock is a city in north Germany)

      @@HinaHeather how long do your flowers last with first crush hina? Yes I will probably buy that rose and keep her potted. But ozeana is the next one I will get.

      I didn’t really count how many days, maybe 5-7 days? I found mine strong in cold autumn but start late in spring.

    Which fertilisers do you use for the roses and why?

      I used a plant based organic mulch during early spring. Then this year I fed with David Austin rose feed. I’m unsure if it’s any better than other rose feeds. Fortnightly I apply uncle toms rose tonic at half recommended strength to most of my roses. And a fortnightly dose of comfrey tea.
