    These gardens are so very German! No glamour or opulence of any kind, just a myriad of stunning rose bushes in bloom and a flowery lawn to showcase them, amazing! I absolutely love German Roses and I do have quite a collection of both Tantau and Kordes plants. Thanks for taking us along, bye 🌹

    Wow! I was so excited to see this video because I am planning to order few roses from Tantau and this helps a lot to finally order what I want. It looks better to see the rose plant even in a video compared to looking at a catalogue. I am after of the new rose called ‘Creme Brûlée, very beautiful colour. Starlet Eva and Ozeana are already in my wish list.
    Some of the roses that they planted there are the ones which are popular and got a lot of international recognitions. I got already some of them in my garden and I’m not surprised if you choose Hansestadt Rostock, it has incredible colour, it’s glowing and beautiful even in the evening. Well done Jay Jay! You made a lot of rose lovers happy with this video.🌹🌹🌹

    So you have managed to visit Germany in the end, I am very happy for you! Hansestadt Rostock is the name of the city called ... Rostock which used to be a member of the Hanseatic League :-) It is a beautiful rose, I cannot recommend it enough. I have five Stadt Rom (City of Rome) roses which are covered in flowers right now, they flower for ever and are really healthy. They are in fact ground cover roses. You are absolutely right, in Germany they do not spray with much hence you saw black spot on some of the roses at the Tantau Rosen. Tantau and Kordes do not need to worry about marketing, nurseries all over central Europe take care of it :-)

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  5 месяцев назад

      You have 5 of the Stadt Rom you’ll have no shortage of blooms for sure. They did tell me they spray the roses there at Tantau but they wouldn’t tell me what with. Just nothing harmful.

    • @gardensenglishandtrivia
      @gardensenglishandtrivia 5 месяцев назад

      @@Jay_Jay Definitely! The shortage of blooms is not my problem right now, a family of wild boar is! They have "visited' me three times so far via my neighbour's garden so we're scratching our heads how to fortify the fence effectively. The animals have made a number of holes in my fence, his is in pieces. I'm going to have three lines of steel wire (+ Romans screws) installed on Saturday. I hope it helps. Sorry if you'd felt like a schoolboy with my "lesson" on the German rose names. I've been a teacher all my life, I can't help it ;-)

    Oh Jay Jay…for the record: Attention, seen last week at Tantau Headquarters, a slightly confused Person running around between different Rosebushes, throwing his Croque into the Flowerbed….😂😂😂 If you like Soul so much you should take a look into Gospel, smaller in height, blueish leaves, Burgundy coloured 2.5 inch flowers with an incredible deep scent of old Roses…great in a Pot…and don’t trust their height expectations, Souls after 4 years gets up to 6 foot…without support on its tree like stems
    thanks for showing…the not so spectacular German Rose Garden…😂😂😂you should make another Trip to Steinfurth, Rosen Schultheiß holds the National Collection of old Roses and it’s beautiful there, they Celebrate the Week of the Roses over there in July…😂❤

    Wonderful varieties of beautiful roses! Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻! Handestant Rostok is one of the healthiest rose I know! The most healthiest I would say. Available in the UK under name Queen Bee. Grows definitely taller than 80cm but not very tall, grows more wider than taller, flowers later than other roses, good to keep wavy trend of blooming roses in the garden, covered with frowers, keep them for a long time.
    Mary Ann is one of my favourite. Awaiting to have her as standard tree. She is a sister of Chippendale.
    Sophie Luise highly recommended for aroma 👍🏻🌹❤️ Doesnt like direct sun.
    Red Piano available in the UK under name Hope and Glory. Might not open buds fully in the UK, probably better in warmer climate. But in sime gardens in the UK doing absolutely fantastic. Need some time maybe.
    Lots of roses you showed, which was very interesting to see in real life. Very and very interesting!!! Thank you Jay Jay 🌹❤️

      I had Queen Bee as tree rose.Not a perfect variety to have as tree rose, however as a bush rose she is incredible! My friend got one in her garden and it looks stunning! I will definitely plant her in future when i have a bigger garden. It is a rose when you plant and forget because she is a ABSOLUTELY HEALTHY 👍🏻 and also very beautiful. The dark foliage with bright orangy gold colour flowers is very beautiful I completely agree with you. She goes a bit wider. Highly and highly recommended 👍🏻🌹❤️
      Ozeana i saw only on their website and your video opened my eyes about this rose. Also paid attention to her. Will think about her during bare root season for sure.
      Lots of roses I didn’t think about but your video changed my mind 🌹❤️

    great fun. wish I could do that. I got two Eva climbers for my front door, Tantau gifted them to me after a bad experience with two Camelot climbers. Eva is a wee stormer, pumping out blooms and they are lasting about three weeks before going very pale pink then shattering. No fragrance so far. I also have Giardina, like gorgeous peonies, Ive had it three years and its only about 6 feet with zero fragrance but I love the form and colour and its healthy. Pastella is super pretty, healthy and floriferous, zero fragrance after three years. Also Augusta Louise, stunning colouration and in its third year is fragrant. Got pomponella and 7 leonardo da vinci this year, bit patchy settling in though. But great fun to se you at Tantau.

    Hello Jay. Thanks for this excellent clip. Thanks for travelling all the way to Germany, thanks for taking the time to share this. Thanks also for smelling these roses. The take away message is, that roses vary vastly in colour, disease resistance and scent. Thanks for being brutally honest about the scents. You are very right to do this. Long may this kind of assessment continue. What’s the point of spending a lot of money , time and garden on a rose with no real scent ?. Or a scent when the weather conditions are just right ?. As a rule. More petals means more scent glands. More scent glands unfortunately means shorter lifespan of a rose flower. But does that really matter if it produces 50 flowers? Not really. It only matters to florist shops and wedding planners. In which case roses are grown for longevity, colour, scent isn’t considered in the industry. So roses have been bred for longevity and not scent

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  4 месяца назад +1

      Hi Andrew and thank you. I’ve never and I don’t think I will ever be a connoisseur on rose scent. All I know is if I like it and how strong it is to me. And this I pass on to you. But I do try and point out I’m not an expert especially on rose scent!:)

    Wow thank you for doing this tour you made it to Germany - plan B. I hope your back was okay with sleeping in your car. Very interesting to see the different approaches taken, no bells & whistles just stunning healthy roses. I planted bare root Augusta Luise and Pastella at the start of the year but so far they have not flowered I'm seeing buds, they are slow to get going this year maybe all the rain we've had but hopefully next year will be better for them. Rosario was my favourite I am a sucker for the cluster roses look and pink - it has to go on the list :) Looking forward to Kordes next. Thanks so much for sharing this you did a great job.

      Yes as I’ve mentioned some of these continental roses very slow to start this year. I still have many in bud waiting first flush. I think it’s low temps they just aren’t opening. They prefer it a little warmer. Rosario yes what a belter. Difficult to believe no stakes or supports but I double checked and nothing, all self supporting. Many of them pruned surprisingly low which may have helped. And may have been reason for the close proximity.

    That was really interesting Jay Jay - thanks for going there to show us those roses we don't tend to see in the UK. Ozeana for me I think if I was buying one., although sometimes what you see in real life has a different impact than an image on screen. I wasn't aware that the EU had introduced the Croc unit of measurement - is there a conversion table online? Looking forward to part two.

      You are absolutely correct. Ozeana to my eyes at least was fantastic. If I wanted another pink I would have 100 percent chosen it ahead of anything at kordes. It looked fab. Also Mary Ann a rose I tried to describe as best I could knowing it might not film as well as what I saw.
      Crocs always a good measurement :)

    Beautiful beautiful video Jay. I love the “industry unit” park-Everything straight & clear. I have never been there because it’s very far away. Thank you very much to drive through all these trouble to show us. “Stadt” is “city” and many German rose have “Stadt” in the name. Gardina is a very reliable climber/big shrub. I have seen it shining in neglect garden. It’s just not a new and high pursued variety any more. And Matthias Claudius rose, despite its pale-philosopher look 😅, is a crazy strong plant in my garden. This spring it flowers in heavy rain very well, leaves are also perfect.

    26:00 I see a sort of Seven Sisters coloration thing going on with your favorite rose. Seven Sisters here in the USA got the name because most racemes contain more or less 7 blooms and they open a well saturated pink which rather quickly fades and each bloom on the raceme has it's own color ranging from deep pink aging on to nearly white. My grandmother, passed on, born 1913 would from time to time mention the Seven Sisters at the homestead where she grew up out in farmlands. Mine recently died from abuse inflicted on it by family, I must get a new one and keep it in a huge pot where I can control it's environment. Anyhow, your favoite rose appaears to begin as yellow, quickly transition to orange, and then on to apricot and then fading out to a whitish apricot. Fascinating.

    As a German, I can comment on the style of garden actually. It is a very oldschool 50s-60s style of gardening, in the postwar period it was all about an orderly garden with a few insects as possible and an accurate lawn. Bees, insects, wildflowers were considered disorderly and not encouraged. This trend continued into the 70s with other plants introduced that are easy to manage and don’t harbour a lot of birds or insects such an conifers, cherry laurel etc. We are still dealing with the leftovers of those. In the 2000s, especially with the campaign „save the bees“ there is a return to more natural gardening but it is still a long way. But yes, Tantau didn’t get the memo yet!

    1:52 Let's name THIS rose "Quarterella" because she is beautifully quartered, her pink is gorgeous, but we are so accustomed to gorgeous pink that we take it for granted. How is she for fragrance? 7:18 , yes, I would sleep in the car also, I would be thinking how many rose plants will the cost of lodging buy me??😆😆 I would rather spend the money on new rose plants than to spend the money in the roach motel! 😄😄 8:51 "Hey Marry Ann, what's your game now, can anybody play...." LOL! 11:20 Artrmis appears to have the globular form that I adore.Also stuffed to the gills with petals. 12:10 I have wondered if low, moist, cool valley air feeds blackspot, but high, dry, circulating air at hilltops discourages it?? Is Tantau on high ground? David Austin would most certainly have moist air coming in off of the Atlantic Ocean. 20:06 Nice globular form, old victorian romantic, and I love those flecks of pink, also, blossoms not full blown have that green, fascinating ting around the petal edges like Paschmina Veranda has, I want one! LOL! Wedding Piano, I think that I have seen that offered in the states, I'll study it and it's "Dunft" fragrance. That green tinge of unopened buds may suggest a common ancestry to Paschmina which has no fragrance. I really have no interest in roses posessing no fragrance, UNLESS, they have some other stellar features, primarily, old, romantic, Victorian, cabbage rose form, and if they nod, I keep them in giant pots, and raise them up off of the ground 2 or 3 feet, to eye level, they can be better observed at that hieight anyhow. Also, if the green flower tinge indicates a common ancestry to Paschmina, the Wedding Piano may possibly have the very long bloom retention that Paschmina has. Alas, I see no USA sources for Wedding Piano. My next search will be at Etsy. Asian rose sellers sell roses of these types but they put their own names to them. Anyhow thank you so much for taking us to Tantau!
    Ralph in Ohio
    I state my name because listening to call in talk independent radio for 30 years as I work at my workbench, callers state their name and location. Any discussions of gardening really should mention location in order to interpret growth performance in terms of location.
