  • These are my thoughts on Olivia rose Austin and how I find is the best way to treat it in my garden.
    The weather has been very kind to my Austin’s this year. If we had a baking hot June I’m sure half of the pink you see from my Olivia’s would be white or shattered, but she would still have enough matter to be beautiful.
    Yes I couldn’t help myself from having a wonder around the garden with camera rolling.

    You see, although I've got plenty to do I've just looked at your video because the other things can wait. Wow, the O. A. looks absolutely lovely. Obviously responds to all the love and attention it gets. As we were first watching the video I could see the red climber on the house and I was thinking, 'What's that one called?' Hey presto, up it came later in the video - Amadeus. I shall have to look it up. And yes, the Maid of Kent is just biding it's time. A lovely look around Jay Jay. By the way, my Rural England is still looking a picture as is The Pilgrim. Thanks, P.

      Hi vintage, if yours is still a baby let her settle for a couple of years. Just whilst the roots grow strong. Then I found deadheading to the first 5 leaf bud isn’t always the best. Deadhead back to a nice firm stem that could support some weight. Best of luck with yours :)

    2:06 I love nodding roses, they have a sort of contemplative, poignant air about them like a Madonna. Idealy elevate them up to eye level. I have no Olivia, but she looks wondrous. Strong performer, it does well to wonder how many thousands of rose plants were tested and passed by in order for Olivia to appear, she is the result of many, many years of hybridization, the distillation of many decades of work and expense to prduce at David Austin.💓💓 Yes, long days and warm weather speed everything up, I must say though, that weather does not cause my Pashmina Veranda to drop her roses, she retains them for a month even, until they look quite dingy and ratty! 😄😄
    The happy singing birds add a pleasant ambience to your video, such a glorious time of year. 9:52 Yes, last summer, that is how my Earth Angel looked, this year she is absolutely wonderful with her Victorian era , romantic cabbage roses and wonderful old rose scent underlaid with grapefruit scent. In my opinion, a glorious garden is an antidote to depression. How can one feel despondent in paradise? 10:07 Now THAT in it's bigness and gloriousness never existed in nature. Frequently my contemplation regarding how to have the best success with any plant is to as much as possible, provide it with the environment that it originated from, however, manyof the plants that we grow never existed in nature, so we are growing "glorius freaks" that need coddling to survive.😄😄 The main plant that I have in mind with this comment is irises. I grow the most glorious, wondrous irises, they look like cathedral glass when backlit with sunshine, however, they are plaqued with trouble, mainly basal rot, whereas, there are irises growing roadside here in Ohio that fluorish with no attention whatsoever. I myself am willing to do all that I can for my "glorious freaks" to sustain them.😍😍 10:50 A house buried in rose vines is a joyous sight. Alas, here in Ohio, they freeze down to around 4 feet above the ground level every winter.
    Thank you for the show and tell. You are more useful in helping people decide what to grow than the salesperson is.

      @@Jay_Jay My Earth Angel survived several hours of hammering rain, it flooded out 10% of my 50 by 150 foot vegetable garden. Fifty+ year of gardening has taught me to plant 10X more than we need so that after calamities we still have enough, surplus is given to neighbors. Have a lovely day!

I had to smile when you were unable to resist the temptation to show us other highlights in your garden, although you did your best to keep talking about Olivia! I like the way the traditional "flaming June" was turned into flaming July" - are you taking bets on that?

    Greetings from Kentucky Jay Jay. Your roses are so healthy looking and beautiful. I did grow Olivia Rose Austin two years ago and it is a beautiful rose. However, sadly it developed Rose Mosaic disease last year and I had to remove it. You are correct that when it was healthy it was always full of blooms, and they did kind of hang downwards somewhat. Maybe one year I might purchase it again. Take care, James

      @@Jay_Jay Hey Jay Jay, I'm in Frankfort, Kentucky in the US. Which is US growing zone 6B. Our high humidity in the summer makes fighting Blackspot disease a real challenge. Hybrid tea and Floribunda roses don't tend to like our growing conditions. That's why I only grow David Austin roses.

      @@JamesBrown-i2e sorry my mistake the first sentence did say Kentucky! How long did the flowers last for you there? But can you recall how long the flowers lasted for you in Kentucky ? Thanks

    • @JamesBrown-i2e
      @JamesBrown-i2e 4 месяца назад

      @@Jay_Jay Best of my memory, the blooms would open and last for about 3-4 days before fading. Currently, my present DA roses blooms are lasting 3-5 days only because the true summer heat has not hit here just yet. I understand you all don't have the dreaded Japanese beetle in the UK. Consider yourself blessed you don't. Goggle Japanese beetle. It's terrible in the Southern US. That insect LOVES to eat every bloom off your rose. If no blooms, it eats the leaves. You have to spray insecticides almost daily for a couple of months during the summer. It really is a challenge to grow roses in our part of the world, but I love them. Take care, James

      @Jay_Jay  4 месяца назад +1

      Hi there. Roses can grow in plastic pots, I often grow them in plastic pots for the first year or two just to see how they get on. But you need to check it’s big enough for the rose your putting in it. And you have to be careful the roses get plenty of water. The plastic can heat up in summer and crack in winter. But it’s a cheap alternative to clay pottery etc. and may not be suitable long term to get best performance from the rose.
