Personal Reflections from Latter-day Saints' Q&A
Upon completing the main library of content I set out to build, I wanted to take the opportunity to share some personal reflections. I also share some helpful information form Elder Ballard, published in the Ensign, on how meeting the challenges of our day require greater gospel learning effort than in the past.

New Testament Issues That Can Challenge Faith

Pew Research just released a poll showing the percentage of Christians in the U.S. has dropped by 16% in just the last decade. What is going on? Look at the Maya sacbe in Quintana Ro and Belize. Also the huge collection of metal plates and banners collected from the local tribes in Peru by the local priest in remote areas of Peru copies of some of which were in Harvard Professor Barry Fell's private collection. What is religion to one generation is history or archeology to another. Recall Robert Schlock, PhD and the possible 12,600 year solar micro nova reset. Kick the dirt in the Utah deserts.

      Glad you are enjoying the content. Sorry for the pace being a little fast - I have done that on a handful of videos when I had a lot to go over (in hindsight I should have just let those specific videos run longer). One solution that works on RUclips is the ability to slow the pace of the video down by changing the playback settings. Here is how you do that on RUclips: click on the settings (the wheel icon in the bottom right corner of the video screen itself on a computer, or if on a phone its the top right corner 3 dots), you can select the playback speed and you slow things down in increments (the next step down from normal would be .75x or 25% slower). You can also choose the “custom” button and choose a precise speed desired rather than the pre-defined suggestions.

    Excuse my formatting. Much of this is direct quotes. The book of Abraham is full of astronomy, yet not part of any mainstream Christianity. It's pretty unique actually. Then I discovered this tradition through many cultures while reading books plus brainstorm ideas to research with some AI. Looking for someone to turn this into an episode. This is the largest collection of parallel ideas that support the Book of Abraham. See, most people criticize it on the translation process, but few have cared to look at the truth of the document. Personally, I am really just interested in learning more about Abraham, so I dive deep :) What is also important is that this is not one or two obscure connections to astronomy, but many = more reliable. The idea of Abraham being an astronomer or having knowledge of astronomy is not directly found in the Bible but is mentioned in various Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions, as well as some ancient historical writings. Here are some of the key sources and figures who spoke of Abraham's connection to astronomy: 1. Flavius Josephus (1st Century CE)Josephus, the Jewish historian, is one of the earliest figures to speak of Abraham as an astronomer. In his work Antiquities of the Jews (Book I, Chapter 7), Josephus claims that Abraham taught the Egyptians astronomy and mathematics:"He communicated to them arithmetic, and delivered to them the science of astronomy; for before Abraham came into Egypt, they were unacquainted with those parts of learning."random website: "What many historians are unwilling to admit is that Abraham possessed advanced astronomical knowledge that would not be rediscovered for thousands of years. Josephus further records that Abraham wasn’t the first astronomer in his family. The study of astronomy originated with Seth, the third son of Adam. He wrote that “God gave [those who lived before the Flood] such long life that they might perfect those things which they had invented in astronomy” (Antiquities, 1.3.9)." 2. Jewish Midrash and Talmudic Literature Midrashic and Talmudic texts also mention Abraham’s interest in the stars and celestial phenomena. According to some interpretations, Abraham gained knowledge of the heavens through divine inspiration.In Midrash Genesis Rabbah (44:12), there is a story where God takes Abraham outside and tells him to look at the stars to show him the future of his descendants. This scene is often interpreted in rabbinic literature to mean that Abraham had an understanding of celestial bodies and their significance, when he talks about his seed being as stars, he was shown from heaven. In Baba Batra 16b, there is a discussion where Abraham is said to have studied astrology before rejecting it in favor of monotheism, signifying a transition from astrology (understanding the stars) to worshiping the one true God. 3. Islamic TraditionIn Islamic tradition, Abraham (Ibrahim) is sometimes described as having knowledge of astronomy or having pondered the stars as part of his spiritual journey. The Qur'an (Surah 6:75-79) narrates that Abraham looked at the stars, the moon, and the sun as part of his search for God, before concluding that God was greater than all of them.Islamic scholars, such as Al-Tabari, expanded on this story in their commentaries, interpreting it as a reflection of Abraham’s quest for understanding through natural phenomena, including the stars and the heavens. " “the seven heavens were opened to Abraham up to and including the throne [al-‘arsh] [of God].”" 4. The Book of Jubilees (Ancient Jewish Text) The Book of Jubilees, a Jewish text from the 2nd century BCE, describes Abraham as having an interest in the movements of the stars. In Jubilees 12:16-18, it says that Abraham learned about astronomy and the order of the heavens from his father, Terah, and that he later used this knowledge to reject idol worship and embrace the worship of the true God."And in the sixth week, in the fifth year thereof, [1951 A.M.] Abram sat up throughout the night on the new moon of the seventh month to observe the stars from the evening to the morning, in order to see what would be the character of the year with regard to the rains, and he was alone as he sat and observed. And a word came into his heart and he said: All the signs of the stars, and the signs of the moon and of the sun are all in the hand of the Lord. Why do I search (them) out? If He desires, He causes it to rain, morning and evening; And if He desires, He withholds it, And all things are in his hand." 5. Pseudo-Eupolemus, "as quoted by Eusebius in the fourth century A.D., which states that “While living with the Egyptian priests in Heliopolis, Abraham taught them many things, including astronomy, and other related things. . . . Abraham, having been trained in the science of astronomy, first went to Phoenicia, to teach the Phoenicians astronomy, then went into Egypt.” Abraham “surpassed all men in nobility and wisdom, who was also the inventor of astronomy and the Chaldaic art, and pleased God well by his zeal towards religion.” 6. The Testament of Abraham pseudepigraphic text of the Old Testament. Probably composed in the 1st or 2nd century AD, it is of Jewish origin"10. And the archangel Michael went down and took Abraham upon a chariot of the cherubim, and exalted him into the air of heaven, and led him upon the cloud together with sixty angels, and Abraham ascended upon the chariot over all the earth. And Abraham saw the world as it was in that day, some ploughing, others driving wagons, in one place men herding flocks, and in another watching them by night, and dancing and playing and harping, in another place men striving and contending at law, elsewhere men weeping and having the dead in remembrance. He saw also the newly-wedded received with honor, and in a word he saw all things that are done in the world, both good and bad" ..... it continues...... www.newadvent.org/fathers/1007.htm 7. Artapanus"In the first century BC, the Egyptian Jew Artapanus wrote an account of Abraham teaching astronomy to the Egyptian Pharaoh.”4 8. Hecateus of Abdera“During the reign of Ptolemy I, Hecateus of Abdera traveled to Thebes and learned stories about Abraham from Egyptian priests; he wrote these stories in a book called On Abraham and the Egyptians. This work is now unfortunately lost, but Clement of Alexandria, a second-century AD Egyptian Christian, quoted a short passage from it in which the worship of idols is condemned.”2 9. Philo of Alexandria (1st Century CE)The Jewish philosopher Philo also speaks of Abraham’s wisdom and knowledge. In his work On Abraham, Philo describes Abraham as a wise man who could perceive the nature of the universe. While Philo does not specifically call him an astronomer, he suggests that Abraham had profound knowledge of the world, including celestial matters. 10. Clement of AlexandriaSome early Christian writers also spoke of Abraham’s connection to the stars. For instance, Clement of Alexandria and other Church Fathers interpreted the biblical story of God showing Abraham the stars (Genesis 15:5) as more than just a promise of numerous descendants, hinting at Abraham’s understanding of the cosmos. 11. An Egyptian Jew“The Testament of Abraham describes Abraham’s tour of the next life before he dies. Scholars think that this work was written by an Egyptian Jew around the first century AD. It is notable for its reinterpretation of the Egyptian judgment scene in a Jewish fashion. This text was read liturgically the Sunday before Christmas during the Egyptian month of Khoiak.”6“[A] fragmentary text from Egypt about Abraham describes how the king (the word used is pharaoh) tries to sacrifice Abraham, but Abraham is delivered by an angel of the Lord. Abraham later teaches the members of the royal court about the true God using astronomy.”7 If you know any LDS blogs/channels that want to turn this into a full piece, it'd prob do better there than in this email. Wow, the western fronteir must have been brimming with such knowledge :p

    Did Josepth try to join the Methodist Church after his first vision?

    • @latterdaysaintsqa
      @latterdaysaintsqa 27 дней назад

      Critics have attempted to claim this to be the case from the period when Joseph lived in Harmony Pennsylvania on his in-laws property, the Hales. Here is how you will find that described in Wikipedia: During this period, Smith also reportedly joined a local Methodist Episcopal Church Sunday school class in Harmony. This church was attended by Emma's family, and led by Nathaniel Lewis, Isaac Hale's brother-in-law. His membership, however, was resisted by several members who were aware of his treasure hunting activities, and Smith voluntarily withdrew his membership. The source for this is a hostile critic and is a reminiscence 51 years after it happened. I wouldn’t be surprised if Joseph did try to attend the Sunday school class in Harmony with the Hale family, possibly in an effort to help heal the fractured relationship with his father-in-law Issac Hale. Besides the details of this claim coming from a hostile source, and 51 years after the event, there are a number of problems surrounding Joseph joining when looking at the policies and procedures this would entail with the Methodist Church. The best detailed description I have ever seen addressing this aspect was done on the FAIR website - here is the link (scroll down to “Did Joseph Smith become a member of Emma Hale Smith's Methodist congregation in 1828, eight years after the First Vision? When the procedures and policy of the Methodist Episcopal Church are examined, it is not possible that Joseph could have joined as related in the story given by one of his critics): www.fairlatterdaysaints.org/answers/Events_after_the_First_Vision Here is how the FAIR piece starts, which is then followed by all of the related specifics: Joseph and Hiel Lewis were cousins of Emma Hale Smith; they would have been aged 21 and 11 respectively in 1828, and in 1879 reported (the claim is then quoted) However, the Lewis' account of Joseph's three-day membership leaves him neither the time, nor the searching assessment required to become a member of the Methodists. This scenario simply does not match how Methodists admitted or expelled members. At best, he was probably regarded as "on probation" or (in modern LDS parlance) "an investigator". The means by which the Methodists separated themselves from Joseph are inconsistent with him being a full member; they do, however, match how probationaries were handled, though in Joseph's case he seems to have had more abrupt and preemptory treatment than was recommended. This, coupled with the late date of the reminiscences, the clearly hostile intent of the witnesses, and multiple reports from both friendly and skeptical sources that claim Joseph never formally joined another religion make the critics' interpretation deeply suspect.

    Kindly and humbly, did you know that the discovery of these so called ‘’ hand bags of the gods’’ are in every ancient culture , that most all notable ancient rulers, pharaohs, kings, in Asia, Angkor wat, Mexico, Mayan, Inca, Egyptian, Sumerian, Hebrew, Israel, etc are common as far back as 6000 bc in gobikli tepi ? It’s just that labans was special cause his was made of brass, and they contain bloodlines, divine authority, incantations, set prayers, creation, etc….. anyone from this point who still won’t investigate the Book of Mormon, is just in plain denial , and if Christ, Moroni, themselves handed you a copy to read, you’d just spit in their faces. I admonish you to read it. Thanks

      Wow - I had to go check that out! Here is Acts 1:1-3 in the Geneva Bible: 1 I have made the former treatise, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 Until the day that he was taken up, after that he through the holy Ghost, had given commandments unto the Apostles, whom he had chosen. 3 To whom also he presented himself alive after that he had suffered, by many infallible tokens, being seen of them by the space of forty days, and speaking of those things which appertained to the kingdom of God. You are right - the KJV has infallible “proofs”, rather than infallible “tokens”. Thanks for sharing - this is really fascinating!

    • @latterdaysaintsqa
      @latterdaysaintsqa 3 месяца назад

      That is a good question and probably something I should have addressed in the video. My guess is these were 2 animals that Joseph didn’t have any knowledge or understanding of to use any type of adaptation (known as loan-shifting or semantic extension) like may have happened with some other things. Here is a great article from Wade Miller on the Scripture Central website entitled “Cureloms and Cumoms” in which he shares what archeology provides us with as to some possibilities of what these animals may have been: archive.bookofmormoncentral.org/sites/default/files/archive-files/pdf/miller/2023-06-01/11_cureloms_and_cumoms_54-70.pdf

    I hate to break it to you, but, the Book of Enoch has been available as literal scripture in the Ethiopian Bible since A.D. 494. It was also a part of Second Temple Judaism. Both the Ethiopian Bible and Second Temple Jewish Apocrypha have been available for study in the English language since the 16 century. Enoch wasn’t accepted as Canon by many mainstream religions during Joseph Smiths time, probably because of its supernatural take on the Genesis 6 story. Its discovery at Qumran accentuated its validity. It is an amazing book and every Christian should read it.

      As I explain in the first 11 minutes or so of the video, the comparisons I make are of Enoch material discovered after Joseph Smith’s death: 2 Enoch, 3 Enoch and the Book of Giants (found in the Dead Sea Scrolls). 1 Enoch was virtually lost to the western world until the Scottish explorer James Bruce brought a manuscript from his adventures in Africa to Europe in 1777. It was not translated in Europe into English until Archbishop Richard Laurence in Ireland translated it in 1821. The likelihood of Joseph Smith having access to this translation is rather remote (as I elaborate in the video), but just to take the argument off the table, I focused only on the Enoch discoveries that came after Joseph Smith died. Here is a helpful article describing these discoveries written by the scholar Jeffrey Bradshaw, entitled “The Rediscovery of Enoch”: latterdaysaintmag.com/the-rediscovery-of-enoch/

    True principles work. Interesting how the church’s teachings correlate so well with positive outcomes.

      Thank you. While there may be some similarities with pre-existence, there are a number of key differences in regards to reincarnation beliefs of Buddhists and Hindus. Here is a well written article in one of our church publications highlighting the similarities and the key differences (written by Spencer Palmer who has been a professor of comparative world religions at BYU): www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/ensign/1989/08/i-have-a-question/what-exactly-is-reincarnation-is-it-contrary-to-the-teachings-of-the-gospel?lang=eng

    I have been in the evangelical charismatic churches ( Assemblies of God, to be precise) most of my life and this teaching is considered heresy. Recently, I have been watching videos by Ralph Jensen in his Taught by Christ channel, which has opened up my heart to LDS teachings.
