      It’s not an awful book to be clear! The author admits in the afterword that she didn’t know much about lesbian life/culture when she wrote it, and unfortunately that lack of understanding shows through 🫤. Some of the language is lovely though!

    Your opening statement sets the tone. You have clearly already decided he is guilty and appointed yourself Judge,Jury, and Executioner. Even despite your weak, obligitary, "these are only allegations" The simple fact that you deliberately and wantonly mispronounce his name shows the contempt you have. Check yourself, or perhaps all men should just assume that all women are nasty, judgemental hate mongers, and we can be pleasantly surprised when one isn't.

    I like this review and your energy. To me it was so obvious that she wants this book to become a movie or a Netflix series (more the latter I think). A lot of the dialogue felt so fake. Like when she stood up and started singing: ‘I am human and I want to be loved’ from the Smiths song ‘How soon is Now’ while with her boyfriend. It felt so Netflixy.

    Thanks, Karen. However, perhaps you should have spoken to librarians around the country. Many public libraries are underused and by allowing non-residents to use their e-books and online resources is helping them to continue to justify their existence. I’ve worked with school & public librarians for 40+ years. The majority of librarians believe that everyone should be able to access ALL books (let’s not even talk about “banned books”!). Our future depends on well-informed participants who know how to verify their research and identify legitimate and scholarly resources. ALL public libraries receive both state and federal funding. If you pay taxes, you should be able to access whatever books, wherever they are available. Now sit back down and let educators teach you about civil rights, taxes, equitable access, Verifying sources, copyright and open access to information.

    For some reason, in the past few months, I've really just become awash in nuance and accepting that everyone I interact with or see is imperfect, and I don't fully know them. I've "known" that for years, but I'm also really starting to _understand_ it. One of my favorite character types right now is a character who knows they're hypocritical on some level, has given up on seeing themselves as a "good person," and just does their best because what else _is_ there to do? I like endings that aren't "happily ever after" but more "happily enough ever after, but still messy." It's always going to be messy and complicated, and full of cognitive dissonance. And I'm learning to sit with and sometimes enjoy cognitive dissonance, without leaning on any thought-terminating cliches. Because what can anybody do except make personal decisions about who and what they're comfortable supporting, and their best to help and support those who need it?

    Great review. I understood the 2nd person view very differently. I didn't think of it as putting the reader in her shoes but rather speaking to her past self as these memories are almost someone else's but are actually hers. A coping mechanism in my opinion.

    Well I’m a psychotherapist and there’s clearly one thing you haven’t grasped.. Patric has no empathy, so this memoir will not be written like an empath would write it! And NO she ain’t autistic, if you’re autistic you cannot read the social queues but if you are a Sociopath you can watch and learn them and even use them to your advantage . Your review is self serving and salacious, weirdly what you accuse Patric of? Why would anyone want to tell the world that they have a diagnosis of Sociopathy ( given that nearly everyone is so ill informed about this diagnosis) if not only for them and freeing them up to be better understood? My overriding take from the book, is she spells out what she needed to so people understood the anti-social aspect and her want to find some way of finding a healthier and even a way of treating Sociopaths in treatment.

    I loved some of his stuff, but I quit him, as he had a habit sprinkling perverse violence and deeply weird sex scenes throughout his work. If you love his work, buy it used so you don't give him money. You can also buy it new and give money to someone who is now being accused of coercing a divorced woman with kids to give him regular oral sex, so he didn't shut down the house she cared for and leave her homeless.

    Let's not forget Marion Zimmer Bradley who was feminist and gay pioneer who had so many people look the other way when it was clear she was horrifically physically and sexually abusing her children between writing feminist reimagining's of Camelot. People thought she was too important to the Wiccan or Gay or SciFi or SCA communities to look into an obviously sick home. (Read the book THE LAST CLOSET by Moria Greyland if you have the stomach for it.) It's mostly men who are sexual predators, but they are not alone in the awful practice.

There is far, far more going on here than what is being hyperventilated over by the Holdover Cro-Magdons that make up Tortiese "Media" & their audience-dogpack. If we decide to let their breathlessness flim-flam us into something ugly & stupid that'll only bite us - the dupes, never the Snake-Oils - in the ass sometime in the mid-to-long-term future as a consequence remains our decision & our decision only.

  • @Diana-mu7pc
    @Diana-mu7pc 23 дня назад

    Girrrrlllll I feel this SO HARD lately, not with Instagram because I don't use it but with social media in general, and basically all I use is my personal Facebook account and my Tumblr (a much smaller platform than it used to be, which sucks at making money and is not nearly as algorithm-driven as all the Titan social apps are). It's actually been driving me crazy because of all the perks and benefits of social media use as you mentioned, but more and more it's so clear that these corporations do NOT want me to have a fulfilling social experience, they want me to buy products and look at ads. It's so easy to do, too, and I don't consider myself addicted but just the frequency at which I check my phone or open these websites... it's like, I could be doing so much better with my time. But then again, how else do we get in touch with people nowadays? I feel like I have too little a presence to completely abandon without the drawbacks (losing the contact it gives me with my friends and family) hitting me very quickly. I could be comparative with my own usage and say that I am a much less screen-dependent person than many other people, but I'm not convinced for a second that my actual usage does me much good for how much of my idle time it occupies. And it drives me CRAZY when people talk about algorithms being somewhat in your control, as some sort of blanket defense for social media, saying how you have to let it get to know you and find your own community... like, yeah, that's true to some extent. I do all that I can to find smaller likeminded communities. But the algorithm isn't my friend who knows me and understands my interests, sympathies, and priorities. The algorithm takes basic, impersonal data about me to predict what I'd get hooked on (not at ALL the same thing as what I would like), based largely on patterns of what people similar to me also get hooked on. And I don't know how much my algorithmically-similar brothers and sisters are ruminating about their social media usage, but we all know social media pushes conflict, drama, and division in our faces all the time, and that all of this stuff is repetitive until particular topics get oversaturated and something else comes in to replace it. *I* am personally unhappy with it. For my own part I'll admit this applies to my RUclips usage too-I love thoughtful and purposeful content like yours, but I'd be lying if I said this was the main or only kind of content I watched; I have spent God knows how many hours of my downtime going down rabbitholes I ultimately don't care about, listening to creators talk about scandals in communities that don't affect me in any way and are ultimately upsetting to know about... that's the power of the algorithm pushing intriguing but trivial topics to me on a lazy Sunday, or when I'm exhausted after getting home from work, and an hours-long rant about a controversial influencer is the first thing recommended to me, and this feels like an easy story to listen to while I decompress. I know that I do this, and I'll do it again, but also... why can't I help it?!!?! Because I can't choose not to see it, so long as I'm staying here. Facebook though is obviously much worse than RUclips with this, where fucking everything is ads and reels and algorithm-suggested memes and shared posts rather than original posts by the people and groups I follow. It's transparently generic content malaise on there. And it's funny how they're stealing all our data all the time, and I actually do make posts about myself and my life, but yet the website seems to know nothing about what I'd actually like! That, or they don't care and just want me to be mindlessly scrolling, sharing, and shopping. I don't have an IG account, but I can assume since they have the same ownership, it's similar, and I can't *imagine* trying to make quality literary content that reaches a wider audience on there. Hats off to you for staying there so long, and congratulations to you almost reaching monetization. 🖤🖤 I love your channel and I hope you get that sweet RUclips dollar soon!

    If you can love Wagner's music, Picasso's art and Thomas Jefferson's contributions to the founding of the USA, you have to ignore most of their unsavory personal lives. For people struggling with this I recommend T S Eliot. In his essay on Aristocracy he introduces his theory of the "Objective Correlative" which attempts to resolve the cognitive dissonance produced by artists whose lives seemingly contradict the truths their works represent so beautifully.

    • @floraposteschild4184
      @floraposteschild4184 9 дней назад

      Few artists would benefit from that theory more than T.S. Eliot. But anyway. I believe that artists can reach for truth in their work that they do not achieve in their lives.

    100% agree with you! I listened to the audiobook and it was even more egregious on the self romanization. I nearly dnf the book but I kept pushing out of a curiosity to see how unbelievable it was. By far my least favorite part as a scientific researcher was her trying to convince us that research was not correct based solely on the fact that her uncle told her the definition of a sociopath when she was young. I kept trying to go back to see where she made the argument for sociopathy but there was none other than it just exists because she says it.

      Sounds like we had the same experience! I listened to the audiobook too, and hearing the way Gagne talked about herself was so grating. I forgot to mention the uncle apparently being the sociopathy expert…truly unbelievable.

    I'm not watching your channel anymore because you blocked my comment on the Neil Gaiman video

      You may be mistaken, because I’ve never blocked a comment. It was likely caught by the RUclips moderation system for some reason.

      I looked through the hidden comments on that video, and yes RUclips hid it, though I’m not sure why. I approved the comment-I’m sorry this happened to you!

      Yeah, I have to second that notion she didn’t block your comment. There are times my comments don’t show for reasons I don’t understand.

      @@ThoughtCouture I do wonder though, how did you miss that? It was the second comment on that video after your pinned comment. I posted it twice because I thought it glitched the first time, and I think I even posted a follow-up comment about the comment disappearing. Just wondering

    If you read Sociopath, what did you think? Have you read a particularly good memoir recently, or an especially bad one? I’d love to hear! 😊

    *I* think this is a cold take (in a good way), but in the digital space we're all so obsessed with claiming identities/occupations like they're prizes or titles of nobility. Anyone who would suggest that an "aspiring writer" is somehow less dignified than just a "writer" seems somewhat elitist; "aspiring" doesn't preclude already being a writer. It's an adjective, not a contradiction. (The original person's take you're referencing seems like their heart is in the right place, but I don't agree with it)

    People can do terrible things and make beautiful art. People can do terrible things and lovely things and you do not have to be the secret arbiter of whether or not they are ultimately a good or bad person or deserved to be forgiven or not. You are not a bad person for liking their art but it is bad to support them. Don’t buy more of their stuff if it’s not used.

    Evolutionary Psychology has an explanation for his behavior. The male of our species is capable of passing on genes to more offspring than a female. So the genetic code encourages males to be promiscuous as that will ensure more such genes propagate. The most successful male in a tribe often has many wives. It only requires a high degree of success to ensure that a man will take up with as many women as his position allows. And Neil Gaiman preferred young women because they are more likely to be fertile. It is really our genes that determine our behavior for their benefit. Even female morality is based on a distaste for males who are not committed to a single partner and the few young that a woman can have.

    Thank you for being kind, I've been trying to find some better videos talking about this and I'm kind of disgusted with how many people just immediately start jumping onto "I never liked his work and if you liked it you were weird" and acting Superior just because they think they knew better because of a matter of taste. Also the amount of terfs using it as opportunity to just say it's our fault for liking his work because he's a man and we should have expected it. As if women can't ever be abusers or problematic in any way

    Never thought I'd have to lump Lovecraft and Gaiman in the same category, staring at a shelf stuffed with their respective works...and contemplating a future of turning away from anticipated media from the latter.

    My home library expanded a lot when I discovered that some of my nearby libraries have a Discard shelf. When some books are removed from circulation, they put them on a Discard shelf (my local library puts them on a cart in the lobby), and they're completely free to take. I don't know how common they are - my library only has it out a couple of times a year, but the Iowa City Public Library maintains their shelf year-round (or at least did so 15 years ago - it's been a while since I visited). It's worth watching for your library's annual book sale, too. Almost every library book sale I've seen has a promotion on the last day letting you fill a bag with books for $5 or less, which obviously isn't completely free, but with a little luck and clever packing you can get SO MANY books for less than $1 each, which FEELS free

      How cool, thanks for sharing this info! I forgot about library book sales-mine does one twice a year I believe, and also has a little used book store stocked with donated books. Libraries really are the best 😄
