2024 Reading Wrap Up 📚 5 masterpieces & 5 massive fails 🫤
New year, new reading wrap up! 📚 Of the 60 books I read last year, some were modern masterpieces, and others were an affront to my literary sensibilities. Today, I'm reviewing the year's 5 best and 5 worst reads: Who will come out on top? And who'll be left in the past?
2024 was my year of contemporary literature and new book releases, and though I can't say I'll read the same way in 2025, I have a much better sense of what's going on in publishing today. But as you'll see, classic lit and nonfiction books are still most likely to capture my heart. Regardless, 2024 was a great year in literature! Thank you to everyone who's spent even a few minutes of your time with me :) 🌻

Reviewing every book I read in 2024…in 5 WORDS OR LESS
Просмотров 355Месяц назад
I know I'm a wordy person when it comes to book reviews...but not today: 60 books, each reviewed in one sentence of 5 words or less according to their star rating. You've got that right: If it's a one star book, it gets a one word review. No reading time to waste! 📱SOCIALS📱 thoughtcouture goodreads.com/thoughtcouture threads.net/@thoughtcouture . . . . . . #readingwrapup #booktube...
Roasting the worst books of 2024 (so bad I couldn’t finish 😢)
Просмотров 1 тыс.Месяц назад
We readers want to love every book we read. Sometimes, however, no matter how hard we try to focus on a book's strengths, its weaknesses are too much to bear, and we can read no further. Though a sense of shame may shroud the DNF, there's no shame in taking the opportunity to flex our critique muscles and analyze what went wrong. So that's what I'm doing today with all six of my DNF books of 20...

If you’re feeling down, read these books 💙

When I find myself in times of trouble, literature comforts me especially these 7 books. They may not be light and cozy reads, but they offer us a space in which to process our pain alongside the characters, and we witness them transform their pain into possibility. Catharsis! So if you're in need of both a good cry and a message of hope, look no further than my favorite comfort books: from anc...

8 Disabled Writers Who Never Used AI (NaNoWriMo take note)
Просмотров 9022 месяца назад
This just in: Disabled people can be, and are, great writers and they don't need to rely on generative AI. The people at NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) don't seem to know that, though, given their recent statement that to condemn AI is ableist and classist. Without AI, they ask, how will disabled writers ever produce their work? Um...like this. Today I'm introducing you to 8 great wri...
What Writers Can Learn from Katy Perry's 143 🎶
Просмотров 9 тыс.3 месяца назад
If you spend any time on the internet, then no doubt you've heard about Katy Perry's latest album, 143 and how it's universally ridiculed. In an attempt to return to superstardom, the former princess of pop music broke every writing rule and delivered the most soulless and shallow album in recent memory. Whether you write songs, sonnets, or stories, 143 serves as a model for everything to avoid...
Radical Unschooling and the Dire Consequences of Illiteracy
Просмотров 600 тыс.4 месяца назад
If there's one thing TikTok is good at, it's taking things to the extreme, and these radical unschooling parents prove it. Send your kids to school? Teach them to read? No way! Instead these unschooled children are "free" to learn whatever they want, whenever they want, and if they don't want to learn something, they won't. But what does this mean for their literacy? You know, the most essentia...

If unschooling meant teaching taxes, investing, resume building, sewing, agriculture, etc I could get behind it...but taking out the little of the necessary stuff like reading, writing, etc then how is that advocating for your child?
Man Oliver crying to himself really hit me. Awful to do that to a child.
I live in Massachusetts so that’s the only part of the country I can speak to but there’s no way an unschooled kid is going to compete for jobs around here. We’re surrounded by higher education, healthcare, tech, pharma, and investment jobs in this part of the country. 2 bedroom houses in my town are selling for $600k. It would be impossible to put a roof over your head around here without an education. White collar or blue collar. Residents across the board are well educated and the standard of living and employment competition would cripple an unschooled young adult.
I mean listen…. We’re gonna need janitors and while they’re working they can learn to read.
she's not teaching history Unless the kids ask, what happened in europe in the '40 or Why did the first world war start. Those kids will never know the Joy of the youtube commentsection *edit* I dont think there is anything worth learning these ladies can teach a child
I was married for 30 years to a sociopath, and I have known others. One thing I can say for sure is that they are hazardous people and leave a trail of destruction, betrayal, and havoc wherever they go. If Ms Gagne is one, writing a self-aggrandizing book full of fabrications is par for the course. Many modern women have been told about their condition, and they will nearly always reveal this to you. My advice if you encounter one is to run away as soon as possible. They are sneaky, cunning, sadistic, and cruel, no matter how much therapy they claim to have.
Man wtf. 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️. Oliver is older than me and can’t read? That isle shxt threw me off.
Yeah I gotta get out of this country. It’s done.
“I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing, but I can tell you that public schools and all of these educators who have gone to college for reading comprehension and curriculum building are forcing my child to think ideas that I don’t like or that I don’t comprehend, so follow me sisters on my vlog!” is a WILD headspace to be in
Thank you for your review. The thing that bothered me the most is that she broke into people's homes, stalked people, stole cars, and never got caught and has no remorse and never faced consequences. She also called someone else privileged when she works for her Daddy as a big wig in the record industry. The Mom kind of disappeared after the first few chapters, who seemed appropriately disturbed by Gagne's childhood behavior. I do think she's a sociopath. Pathological lying is a common trait which you believe she is.
i'm someone who very highly values my reading skills and ability, so seeing people treat literacy education like these unschooling types feels disrespectful, if that sounds odd
Just think. These kinda of people think they know better but really don't. Have like a GED or high school diploma at best and think they know how the world works in their tiny space. It's scary to think and these kids are gonna someday take over in our place. Good or bad.
Glad I could read at a 12th grade level when I was a 5th grader
Although I went to public school and it wasn't a fun experience, I absolutely "felt the sun on my face every single day" (unless it was heavily overcast, in which case I still wouldn't have got much sun even if I hadn't been in school). I also got plenty of "creative time" despite being sat at a desk doing lessons ... because I wrote short stories in one notebook while also writing notes in another and working on my assignments at the same time. This was possible in large part because ... I was taught how to read at a young age. Go figure! Now, as an adult, I know many very smart and often highly educated people whose native language is not the predominant language where they live. They struggle with ordering food at restaurants or shopping at grocery stores, reading signage in public, and just communicating in basic ways with other people. It's very isolating and lonely for them! I can't imagine what someone like Oliver goes through, being unable to read even in his native language. He seems like a smart guy, himself, so he's fully aware of what he's missing out on. I'm glad he's working on it now, and wish him (and all the kids who have been or will be failed by their parents in these ways) the absolute best.
Did you just say Guy-man? It's pronounced Gay-man as in the oxymoron.
Glamourization of antiintellectualism and excess freedom individuals have in America(homeschooling as a whole concept is corrupt and fcked up & creates a breeding ground for so much hidden abuse)
It’s very hard to listen to you. Very vague and qualifying.
The segment about the man doing his best to learn how to read was both heartbreaking and inspirational. I feel so bad for him and the circumstances that led to his current situation. At the same time, he is making the active effort to learn and grow, and I have endless respect for him. I hope he reaches a level of literacy that makes him feel as though he’s succeeded and that the societal issues you discussed in this video can be solved somehow. Reading is fundamental to a functioning member of a modern society.
The US is a dying empire. Thanks to implementation of the Powell Memo from the late 60s, the rich and powerful are winning. What they do not believe is what goes around, comes around. With the incoming Presidential administration, the decline will speed up.
She says don't conform but trust her?! lol
Unschooling is just an excuse not to teach your children because the parents are lazy, stupid or both.
I probably should have done teaching as a carrier given what I did in college, but the more stupid stuff like "unschooling" that comes out the happier I am that I chose blue collar work instead. It's insulting. Sorry that facebook told you book bad essential oil good- but doTerra won't help your kid fill out even the most basic resume. It just sucks. These parents assume they know everything and will crucify you if you dare challenge them on anything. Social Media really is the worst invention of all time.
There is a reason it was illegal to teach slaves to read. Illiteracy is a tool of oppression.
These unschooled kids will never be able to get a decent paying job that allows them to be independent. I can’t speak for job qualifications in other countries, but in America, the majority of minimum wage jobs require at least a test of General Educational Development (GED). The few jobs that an adult without a high school level education could get are the types of jobs that hire young teenagers and undocumented immigrants. Jobs that pay below minimum wage, have terrible working conditions, unethically long hours with no breaks, and/or have no insurance benefits or 401Ks. So knowing that most unschooling parents are either part of MLMs or have their own online business really puts an even darker perspective on what motivates them to unschool their kids. They’re raising their kids to be indentured servants who will be completely dependent on them for the rest of their lives.
Anybody who grew up in the 60s-70s-80s-90-00s, this stuff was going on. Everybody knew it. So yes, never be a fan of these human, all too human flawed humans.
I’m from Idaho. And yes. We’re an embarrassment. One of the earliest school memories I have is my mom in a parent-teacher conference saying “Idaho isn’t a state, it’s a disease.” 😅😂
For 2024 my best book was Perks of Being a Wallflower. I read it when I was about 13 and reading it again 11 years later really helped me grasp what was going on and relate to the characters in new ways. Other than that I read the last two books in the Dark and Hollow Star Saga by Ashley Shuttleworth and they were impeccable!
My brother unschools his kids, claiming that they can "teach them so much more at home". His daughter wants to become a vet or a doctor one day. How is she supposed to do that without knowing to read or write? How is she supposed to get into University when she is not at grade level in ANY class? She would have to then be motivated enough to go back to school as an adult to upgrade everything. So they are just setting her up for failure.
Everything they teach during unschooling time is stuff that can be shown and taught before and after school. Cooking? Have them help with dinner. This is neglect and they will spend their time on Roblox all day if they have the choice
I think you articulated really well why "Lolita" is such a great book. If you have never read "Pale Fire", I'd recommend doing so.
Thanks a lot! I found it difficult to summarize my thoughts on Lolita, so I’m glad to hear they made sense. I haven’t read Pale Fire yet, but I’m hoping to this year!
He’s a great author
I know a current teenager and his four sisters who are currently being unschooled. The teenager was pulled out of school at the end of first grade and his sisters never went to school at all. He is now 16 and reads at a second grade level and can do math at about a 3rd grade level. His sisters are totally illiterate and can’t do any math at all. You know how teens often tell their parents “you’re ruining my life!”? Well his parents are literally ruining his life. In my opinion, unschooling should be considered negligent and should carry a hefty fine and mandated public or private schooling. Unschooling is pure laziness and selfishness on the part of the parents and I find it absolutely infuriating. I’m not a teacher, but I have six kids, came from poverty and was the first person in my family to get an advanced degree or finish college at all. And I can say with certainty that I couldn’t be successful today if I couldn’t read, write or do math. When my kids complain about homework or school being boring I always remind them about how important it is. There’s lots of different types of knowledge and paths they can follow (college, trade school, military, etc) but none of those are possible without the basic foundations.
Can you tell which state are they from?

i really enjoyed Convenience Store Woman...very powerful. pain-stakingly honest portrayal of a woman trying to navigate going against the grain, quietly & earnestly.
I enjoyed Convenience Store Woman too! Keiko was such a fantastic character, and I was rooting for her all the way through.
Oh yes this was a great book! Even though it was short I felt like it really explored what it was trying to do well
@@IndigoF0X totally 💯
I read Lolita last year in an attempt to read more literature, and it was so much different than what I was expecting. Hearing the way people talked about it, and what it ended up being were hugely different. I liked it, but I wouldnt put it in my top 5 for last year
My experience was similar-I wasn’t sure what to expect going in, but it was so much more complex than I anticipated. I’m glad you enjoyed the book too!
The unification of Germany - that was so funny!! My favorite book was Apparitions by Adam Pottle! 😊
I totally did not understand the Germany part of the Proulx 😂. I’m not familiar with Apparitions, but I’ll look into it!
@ It is marketed as horror but it’s really not. And it really dives deep into understanding communication and emotions! I was so surprised by it!
have you made a longer review of Women by Caldwell?
Great list. Particularly interested in Committed; I'll have to add that to my list to look out for one day. I'd say the best book I read in 2024 was objectively Moby-Dick, but my favorite was Weaveworld by Clive Barker.
Thank you! 😊 I’d love to read Moby Dick soon, but I know I need to carve out the time and energy for it. Weaveworld sounds like a lot of fun!
Great vid and I love your channel!
I haven’t yet read Zadie Smith, but 2025 is the year I finally do-On Beauty sounds so thought-provoking!
I hope you love the book when you read it! I’m planning on reading either White Teeth or Swing Time from her this year and am very much looking forward to it.
white teeth is an all-time banner of a book
What was the best book you read in 2024? I’d love to hear your recommendations! 😊
my favorite book of 2024 was You Dreamed of Empires, by Álvaro Enrigue. A stunning and beautiful novel of first contact between the Spanish and the Aztecs, with palace intrigue, hallucinogens, and a bit of breaking the fourth wall.
Pain Woman Takes Your Keys by Sonya Huber!
This sounds right up my alley, thank you for sharing! Added to my TBR 😄
This sounds fascinating! I’ve been enjoying translated lit lately, so I’ll definitely check it out!
That "create a community" is now a toxic term is very 21st century
Man that lady talking about grocery shopping, gardening, sports, making friends, and being frugal as things her kid will be doing instead of school…my mom must have been a super hero, since we managed to do all of that while also going to public school 😂
The mothers look like they are high as a kite
Well don't care their kid not mine 😂
I think it may be revealed soon that this book is a fraud book written by a disrupter group- and I think it’s possible some of the comments here are from those on that team - I don’t think this author is a real person. And clinicians do not use the term sociopath or sociopathy and haven’t for decades- since before she was in school. Many things in this book don’t make much sense . And I’m not sure of course about everything- but there was a disrupter group that was massive on social media- I guess we’ll just see what happens.
I think Vanessa not seeing herself as a victim is key to the thesis that we tell ourself the story we need for us to survive.
I am generally pro school, but I watched a video recently from a teacher in the US telling her story of her school going into lockdown due to an active shooter. To me, that is insane. I can't imagine going to school with a risk of being shot and the stress of lockdown drills etc. I don't have kids, but if I was in the US and had kids, I would certainly hesitate to send them to school. I realise this is not why many of these people are choosing this, but I could certainly people in their circles for that reason.
I was homeschooled and partially “unschooled” until about 7th grade. I had a positive experience and look back on my childhood fondly, aside from not getting a great foundation for math. My next door neighbors also homeschooled, and we were part of the same homeschooling group in town. I had tons of social interaction and don’t feel I missed out in that aspect. I spent most of my time reading and drawing, so I ended up a “gifted” kid in those areas, but struggled in all of my math classes throughout middle school to college. It really is dependent on how hard your parents work to create a curriculum for you!
