  • Brace yourselves, bookworms! Today I'm reading one star book reviews of my favorite books, from modernist classics to contemporary fiction.
Join me as I react to the harshest, funniest, and most downright bizarre one-star reviews of my all-time favorite books. Will I be left speechless in shock? Or will I find myself agreeing with some of the criticisms (gasp!)?
P.S. Don't worry, my love for these books remains unshakeable (mostly).

What did you think of these one-star reviews? Are there any books YOU would rate one star? I’m super curious, so let’s chat in the comments! 😄

I think part of the problem is that these works take effort to fully appreciate, effort that many readers aren't willing to put in. There are many books I enjoyed only because we read and studied them in class. If I had read them on my own, I'm not sure I would have liked them as much.

I think you’re spot on with this! I definitely noticed a trend while going through reviews that if a book wasn’t easy to read, the reviewer judged it as badly written. And I’ve had the same experience-sometimes the guidance of a class really helps!

23:23 I like the idea of doing a deep dive of this topic.
I know as a writer myself one of the harder things I'm learning how to do is separate my own beliefs from my character's and let them do things I wouldn't.
One part of me will say 'No, I don't want the character I like to have done something wrong!'
while the other part of me says 'Sure but hear me out, it would make the story really compelling and good.'
But I didn't start thinking this way until I really got serious about my writing.

I really enjoyed your analyses! Very thought-provoking. None of these books deserve 1 star imo.

Wow, you have just gained a new subscriber. I was inspired to go and look at the reviews on my favourite books and they certainly made me upset although they did give me a lot to think about and I do wish that we were able to see books through other peoples eyes. But reading is a very personal experience and I think that’s what’s so great about it.

That’s so kind, thank you! I felt the same way, it’s hard not to be a little offended at first 😅. And you’re totally right-reading is a lot more interesting when every reader has a different perspective!
