pachinko is such a treasure of a book!!! forever in awe at how masterful min lee is in her storytelling ⭐️ i also loved how much i learned while reading, i had noooo idea about japan’s history not only with korea but other countries as well. it’s crazy how they’re rebranded from their barbaric crimes to a place filled with cute things
@@backtoreads It’s a great story, for sure. It somehow managed to be sweeping and somewhat surface level and still be very moving. That takes a lot of skill! Yes, I have a lot to learn still, but that’s how it goes, every time I learn something new I realize how little I know ^^ A country and people is always more than one thing though, but the negative parts are too easily hidden or erased.
Joined during the premierrrrrrr so you'll most definitely have heard everything I'm about to say. But we gotta get those stats 📈📈📈📈 😏 I love how you articulated this book. It was so dense, and thought provoking, I don't even know if I could have fully wrapped my brain around HOW to go about talking the book. But love how you did it!! Especially when talking about this book being a snapshot or a glimpse into history where media hasn't really given more of a focus on. I really enjoyed Sunja as a character as I said in the comment -- I really felt like she connected all the moving parts in the book. Because even when you see the other generation's struggles, you get her reactions/thoughts on it and it kind of shows a contrast or reminded me of how her life was similar or not to theirs. Thank you for answering all of my babbling questions 🧡🧡
Thank you Mimi! 🥰 I wouldn't have known where to start either, if it weren't for your rambling questions! 😂 I think your questions were very insightful and I don't think any of us are here to find the right answer or the right thing to say, we just say whatever comes to mind. And from this book, a lot of things can come to mind, so our discussions are just a little slice of everything in the book, just like the book is just a slice of the history of two whole countries and their peoples. (Three with North and South Korea.) I agree about Sunja, she held it all together and was kind of like a mirror to everything else. It was very beautifully done. I'm so glad I got to read this book, finally, after seeing it everywhere, and that we could read it together! I really appreciate hearing your thoughts on it. Thank you for joining the premiere and leaving a comment, I really appreciate it! 🥰💜
Welcome to join the premiere of this book club discussion on Pachinko! This video will premiere 20 minutes after the one on The Song of Achilles, so if you want to join both, you can! (I know I will!) I'm trying this out, it's on Friday the 13th, what could possibly go wrong? Anyways, welcome! 😊💜
I’m so glad you read this book and hear your opinions❤. I think this book is amazing how it follows so many different characters through generations. There are a bunch of more great books from South Korean authors for exampel Almond: A Novel by Sohn Won-pyung but also If I Had Your Face: A Novel by Frances Cha. Anyways love to see what books you will read next 👏!
It's an epic book! I have Almond on my tbr, but hadn't heard of If I had your face. It sounds really good though, adding that! Thank you! 😊 I'm currently reading The Power by Naomi Alderman. Not sure how I feel about it yet, and I'm about 70% through!
It's quite slow at first, but once you get into it, it's very enjoyable. I wouldn't recommend rushing through it like I did, but I don't think it will be a challenge for you at all, mammoth-wise 😅 The challenging bit is just the hardship of it all, but it's a beautiful read. Thank you for joining the premiere and leaving a comment, I really appreciate it! 🥰💜
Hi Ellen! Congratulations 🎉on hitting 300 subscribers. I tagged you to do The Booktube About Me Tag created by Harriet Rosie, if you’re interested. It is airing on Friday.

So many books and so little time. The ever expanding tbr! Happy reading to you.

You convinced me to add it to my (very lengthy) TBR!!
It's worth it! 😄💜

I agree that this book will become a reference to the family saga trope. I can't believe I'm adding another mammoth to my tbr lol

It sounds like such an interesting book! There is just too much to read 😩
Hi Cat! I know what you mean ^^
