Using academic research for writing fiction is just pure excellence. Pachinko is a memorable work. A PhD thesis takes 4 years to be written and almost no one, actually, reads it. This book took 10 years (or since 1989 - initial idea mark) and it will be read for "eternity" by innumerable readers.
