what foreigners may not be able to tell is the brilliance she displays in speaking with a Busan accent when she's a Seoul native. It's very hard to perfect that accent and she did.
Yes she did!! Even more fluent than yoon yeo-jung.. and child sunja actress was also good
She must have an ear for languages since her English and pronunciation is also impressive!
I've watches pachiko only for her acting her accent I was shocked of her English. Her korean is so beautiful. How can they speak 2 languages with perfect accent
I didn't know that. I'm glad I can appreciate her performance that much more now.
i am from Busan and she did 200%
So many Korean artists are bringing such a breath of fresh air. Love her aura
she is absolutely darling
I couldn’t agree more. I’ve watched so many brilliant Korean and Japanese live action shows over the past year and a half that all deserve praise for being all quite original and a breath of fresh air on the international stage.
@@danielwhyatt3278 yup their presence in the film industry and music business is soo impactful and I'm here for it! I honestly don't know a lot but from what I've seen so far the quality of their productions is top-tier and I love how they carry and share their culture in their art!
Such rich cultures, so much respect, so much history, inspiring work ethics and amazing esthetics/visuals!
Lots of western artists and production companies should take some notes
I agree with all of you! I've enjoyed all of the South Korean artists & productions over the last 2+ years. So glad I discovered them. They are really talented!
I love the Korean Wave
We needed more than 6 minutes 😭 Minha is a wonderful actor! Everyone MUST watch the series & read the book.
Hi.where can I watch the series from?
@@primrosencube7002 it’s on AppleTV
When I finished the book I didn’t stop crying… I just sleep crying… until now pachinko is one of my favorite books that has an special place in my heart ❤
She's an amazing actress and her style is unique
I love her outfit! 😍
How endearing she is. Too bad it was so short. Steven come on, when you have such a lovely guest, smart and interesting, please please, give her more than 6 min!
Good start though
Totally agree. It seems like the best kind of guests don’t get long enough.
She was really nervous, better to cut it short
most talk shows think if someone isn't famous that we won't be interested - that's just not the case. Being talented, interesting and/or funny is the only prerequisite. She was delightful.

I binge-watched it with my wife. As someone whose grandfather survived the Bataan death march of POWs during Japans occupation of the Philippines, this show hit some emotional chords with me. Must watch!
The father of the Smothers Brothers was in it too, apparently.
And my father survived the largest man made explosion before the nuclear age. In Halifax, NS.
Ingat po kababayan!
@@michaelrmurphy2734 Um...my mind is blown right now. The Smothers Brothers gave the commencement speech at my college graduation back in 1990 !!
Sorry to hear that. Did Japanese government express any apology for the innocent death of the Phillippines?
Pachinko is brilliant and gripping. Hoping for more films and literature highlighting the Asian WWII experience because it's just as tragic and brutal as what went on in Europe, and it's a shame that the average Westerner knows little to nothing about it.
Watch Mr Sunshine
I’m glad shows like this heighten the awareness of that dark and tragic period in world history. As they say, there’s no future for those who forget their past.
@@teleriferchnyfain I LOVED this show!
There are a lot of content in Korean, Chinese and other Asian languages / countries about this period of history, sadly a lot of it isn't available in English. I always grew up in the West as an "Asian" kid feeling very conflicted about how Eurocentric our WW2 history was taught at school. Just as much as it is in Europe, what happened during the Japanese occupation across Asia and the following years still have consequences till this day.
If Japanese had not done it some western power would have.. It was just a matter of time and priority.. No one is better here.. .. Westerners are not clean..
Blows my mind to see Korean representation, Stephen talking about the Japanese Occupation of Korea, and then Minha translating LOTR phrases into Korean! As she says, those are kind of difficult phrases to make sound good in Korean
What a heart breaking series......and the fact it all happened historically.
Yes. And the fact that this is literally just ONE experience of the millions during Japan's colonial (or as I call it genocidal) era is mindblowing. Unfortunately, documentation during that time wasn't as meticulous as in Europe with the Nazis. Jews also kept very careful records of a lot of things during the Holocaust (some were saved and preserved). It's heartbreaking that so many of the Asian victims are now quite old or have passed away... and this still isn't a core (or even minor) part of our educational curriculum. History matters. Memories matter.
@@siiiiiuu7 what really blew my mind is that the Japanese themselves don't know much about what happened. Meanwhile German students' history class curriculum is 90% about WW2 and the rise of Hitler.
@@siiiiiuu7 And the attitudes of Japan and Germany are different. Japan still does not have an attitude of acknowledging or apologizing sufficiently. And Japan is trying to hide their war crimes without properly studying history. And they criticize the victimized country for trying to remember its painful history.
yeah Korea, after 38 yrs of Japan occupying the country, abused for being who they are constantly. it went into the Korean war, where armies from 40 different countries came to Korea and bombed everything for 3 yrs nonstop. then it became the poorest country in the world. I think after all that suffering Korea got to have some soft power that people in the world can relate. the pain they experience was not light and to find happiness and joy in life. people need that now.
How can I watch pachinko ? I am an Indian
Pachinko is either the best or second best show Ive seen this year, and Ive seen a lot. She is incredible in it too... I wish Stephen asked her more about Korea under Japanese rule and her grandmother's experience during that time, I don't think many people realise what a truly awful and traumatising time it was for their people. How the Japanese treated them reminds me of stories I've heard from my grandparents about the Holocaust.
My great grandparents protested against the Japanese and were incarcerated at the same prison although they met later. Sad and hard times.
Just that one brief clip at the start was pretty amazing: see her cheek twitch in stress right on queue? How did she manage that?!
- Yeah, it would have been fascinating to learn more about what her grandmother actually had to say about those times, but, hey, it's a late night comedy talk show: the Colbert challenge is to keep it light, and few subjects can get intensely dark and heavy as that, hence his immediate topic swerve. Very professional.
My grandparents(passed away)lived in the Japanese colonial days, recalled they saw many young women forcefully being taken in the streets as 'comfort women' (sex slaves)to the war field. And when the war was over many of these women were murdered by the Japanese miliatary to hide their crimes. Till this day, Japanese goverment refuse to apologize, and UN record, they estimated around 200,000 Asian women were taken as sex slaves, which many of them were Koreans.
If you get a chance read the book - it's even hetter
I was aghast in particular when I learned about the number of national treasures that Japan destroyed and stole from Korea during the colonial period. From a culture that boasts placing the utmost deference to its own traditions, it was truly sad and upsetting to learn that the same wasn’t extended to Korea.
Korea is really making its mark on Hollywood at the moment. Great to see.
The politeness of Korean actors and musicians is admirable.
They're all like that. I visit there often and, at least with foreigners, they are quite polite. Still, my Korean friends there are still respectful even after many years.
The show is absolute epic !! For thousands Koreans it’s extremely sad and emotional. Well done show and amazing book as well. Bravo
She is an amazing actress. Her performance in Pachinko is so good.
This show is honestly awesome the acting the storyline the production the emotions wow and minha did a great job
She was so cute. I love how the audience reacts to hearing about her grandmother crying at the show.
Let’s not get started on them skills as an actress, this woman has gravity.
what a lovely person, i hope we get to see much more of her
Just finished watching season 1 and came across this interview! Kim Minha's accent and voice sounds so powerful! And her acting is the soul of the show for sure
i did NOT know she was an english speaker, simply for the fact that her olde korea accent is so spot on. omg. in this context, her performance on pachinko is freaking amazing.
I actually thought she was Korean-American... It's quite surprising she didn't study abroad cuz she was so fluent
She's so cute! I love the way she talks even through her nervousness she's still really charming... and her skin is GLOWING
Oh Stephen is so nice and always brings new foreign artists to the show, I love that! Haven’t heard of Pachinko but now I’m interested, she seems very sweet!
I will be shocked if it doesn't take home at least one award during award season. I really think it was one of the best shows of the year so far! Cried like a baby, sobbing during the season finale. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
My friend recommended it and handed her copy to me telling me that she couldn't put it down. I read each page and felt so much. The author took about 12 years piecing this book together and I'm so grateful the world can now both read and watch this storyline that is the same story of so many people around the world.
She’s adorable and a fantastic actress.
She seems so real and it’s a refreshing change for actor/actresses often seem fake.
All the breakthrough artists who haven't moved to Hollywood yet seem to be that way
Even the top stars like Kim So Yeon are that way. It is refreshing.
i feel like that's only hollywood actors, not actors in general.
Most Hollywood actors always seem to be in character when they appear on talk shows. It's kind of the norm for us foreigners that's why we admire and appreciate foreign actors so much
she is too precious, she carries with her that breeze of freshness in the media that i havent seen in a very long time, this interview too short oh my,
This was such a cute wholesome interview 🤗 I love her outfit, she looks like an ice cream cone covered in sprinkles 🤩✨
She's a beautiful young woman...just very endearing.

I lived in Uijeongbu and Seoul for a few years and the Korean people that I met were lovely and very nice to me! ❤️🇰🇷
I loved the first season so much! They did not disapoint with the acting is, indeed, TOP TIER, and also the writing
Sooo proud of her for doing so well on her first late night talk show! Can't wait to see her in other roles!
It must be very daunting being on an American Late show for the first time. I think you'd want to Stephen there for that first one. Like he waited at the steps to make sure she got up OK before moving to the desk. It was a small moment but it just makes me appreciate him even more.
So short!! We need more of Minha, please invite her in again, she's amazing
Amazing actress! Glad more 3 seasons planned.
I love listening to her voice, it's so sweet and gentle.
She's so lovely and sweet. Her acting is so good too.
처음 등장할 때 살랑살랑 걸어오면서 웃으시는 거 진짜 너무너무 귀엽고 사랑스럽다...💓
And the best actress award goes to...... If you haven't watched Pachinko, you will understand why I say this when you do! Make sure you have plenty of tissues! Love how the "Korean Wave" is bringing this type of content to worldly audiences to experience the Korean heart and how they 'endure'. And to hear she is a huge LOTR fan too, makes me love her even more!!!!

Anti-Japanese tribalism ," a book accusing China and South Korea of lying about their history, became a huge bestseller in South Korea.
It also examines the truth about the comfort women issue.
The author is a professor at Seoul National University in South Kore
Having read the brilliant book, I wasn't ready for how beautiful the series actually is. The cinematography, storytelling acting.
We’re watching this right now & it’s fantastic! She’s such a good actress. Have been a fan of kdramas for the last ten years or so- Pachinko stands up there with the very best.
this brought tears to my eyes! she's amazing, I'm glad she's getting the recognition she deserves 💞
Korean culture ,cinema , food and everything else is top notch. Unfortunately we discovered it later. They are some incredible people with incredible taste and history 💜❤️
i saw this minseries, it blew me away. i feel it's the best of any language that i have ever seen. it links new characters and different eras with each episode. Minha Kim and the other actors put alot of depth and feeling into their characters. i think it deserves all of the awards.
Omg love her!!!! I feel like she need it more time I was enjoying the interview. The series is so heartbreaking and at the same time beautiful, the actors are superb.
How gracious was she? I love her already.
The book and show are fantastic! Minha Kim is lovely.
Have her back for a longer interview!!! I’m so curious, she seems lovely and it seems like you two would have a lot up talk about

Phenomenal actress, she blew me away in "Pachinko" and made me cry SEVERAL times
Pachinko was fantastic. Well worth a watch!

Ms. Kim, your performance is spell-binding… best wishes 🥂 🖖 🫶

Pachinko is amazing. Absolutely loved it. Korean movie industry is creating masterpieces.
Oh my god I’m so proud of her!!!! I ve been a huge fan of Korea waaaay before it got mainstream and only known for its kpop! This actress is the essence of Korea! So bright and resonates joy and warmth! Just like the Korea I know ! MinHa you were so close to letting him speak Korean on American National tv hehehehe
Jimmy Kimmel has "spoken Korean" with Blackpink on his show!
you were a fan of a country before it went mainstream? :S
@@genesises Shes obviously talking about the Hallyu wave (Korean pop culture), please keep in mind that English is not everyone's first language (myself included) 😊

Ok, repeat after me, Stephen.

Her English is so fluent love her
Too cute, charming and beautiful - all of it blends so well with her.
great actor. i still think about the series i watched a month ago, it's so memorable.
MinHa Kim,,,Promising Global Star !!! Too Lovely,,,
She is so good in many scenes. But the nuances she put in that scene where she first went to the train station to sell her kimchi speaks much of her as an outstanding actress. It was a difficult scene with so much focus on the crowds around her. But she pulled it off. *applaud
Such a lovely actress! 🥰
Pachinko on ATV+ is fantastic!!! A roller coaster of emotions in a multi-generational drama. What an actress too -- her scenes are incredible. And before you get upset that ATV+ is $4.99/month (Is it on Netflix? No. The answer is no.) you can get a free week trial, and first season is already fully out. Also some great shows to get the most out of the free trial: Severance, Ted Lasso, Tehran, Home, Schmigadoon.
Incredible acting. That was really good.
Pachinko is a must watch. She did a great job, She's brilliant..💕
She has such a deep, lovely soul 🤍 Love you MinHa!

I love her voice. She is so beautiful and those freckles of hers as well.
Fun fact: tolkien took the you shall not pass line from the french during the battle of verdun in ww1. The actual phrase was more like you shall not let them pass but the inspiration is clear.

This lady was absolutely amazing in the series. And the series itself was excellent. Quality.
It makes me so happy that Asians are finally getting there. She looks nervous. But I respect her more than any other celebrity who comes and sits on the couch confidently speaking the English language. More power to you girl ❤️
She is a great actress! And Pachinko a great production for sure.
