This guy is just cool as anything!! Every interview he's just a doll, respectful to women, and just a face I wanna chew on, Lee Jung-Jae is absolutely adorable!!
I have always been a huge fan of Stephen Colbert and this interview just made my respect for him grow to another level. He is so respectful and aware. For example, Stephen was ready for a handshake and wanted a fist bump a couple of times but he immediately recognized it wasn't going to happen and did not force the situation. He also pronounced Lee Jung-jae's name correctly! I'm pretty sure he also knew exactly what the dalgona game was and intentionally gave Lee Jung-jae the easy one and himself the hard one so that he could purposefully lose and make the guest feel at ease and also not drag out the interview by actually trying to succeed with the umbrella. Although not a whole lot of new information was revealed from this interview it was very wholesome and Lee Jung-jae was as charming as ever. Kudos to him for publicly recognizing his translator and also for answering in English whenever he felt comfortable with it.
To let everyone know, Lee Jungjae has always been a Top A-list actor in Korea for almost 30 years. He became famous in the west.because of Squid Game but he was already very famous in Korea for a very long time. If anyone wants to see charismatic or eveil Lee Jungjae, I recommend you to watch 'new world' and 'deliver us from evil'. You will be surprised how versatile he is as an actor.

@@jamesmin1239 agree his transformation was incredible!!! I think he is another "role model" actor, I like him in general as an artist. He is top notch!!!
Gotta give it to Stephen and his team. There's been a few clips from interviews to the cast of Squid Game done by US/Western reporters that went viral for all the wrong reasons. But Stephen seemed to know his stuff (he even mentioned how Jung-Jae has been popular for a long time in Korea), and bringing the translation and editing it to make it more dynamic was such a nice touch.
I love what he said about the characters trying to reclaim their humanity that was taken away from them in such a competitive society. I also love that he keeps taking video clips instead of pictures. 🤣🤣🤣
Something about Korean artists just screams humility and grace and poise. They have a very warm demeanour but know how to crack a joke at the right time. So nice to live in a time where I get to experience cultures from all around the world :)
You should watch running man, the host of the variety show, Yoo Jae-Suk is the literal king of the industry, and is the so-called "National MC". He had hosted some of korea's most famous variety shows. (tho his title is comedian, and not every one can be one in an official sense (there's an "exam" of sorts) )
I think it's due to the culture as well, they are very set on manners and respect towards eachother, whereas in the west I feel like a lot of people either forget the manners when they're older or just have never been thought to show respect to others. My sister went to Seoul and said she's never felt so safe in a big city, no one made her feel unsafe even though she was a woman all alone in a foreign country. All shop owners were all very helpful and respectful too. I think we could really learn from them in that sense.
@@RookieAssassin South Korea is one of the safest countries in the world. Women can walk alone at late night without feeling uneasy or scared. You will feel safe walking alone even at night over there. Also Koreans dont steal other people's belongings at cafes, restaurants, subways etc. I mean it is partly because there are CCTVs everywhere but i think them not stealing goes beyond that. I think it has something to do with their culture. I lost both my wallet and cellphone once when I was in Seoul and i got those back the next day. Whoever picked them up dropped them at a police station and a police officer called me to pick them up the next day. The cash was still there in my wallet

The reason being was because every ad I saw him in, he was portrayed in that way. The funny thing is that Squid Game was the first drama I saw him in, and he played an entirely different character than his usual roles. Anyways, this interview reminded me of the Lee Jung-jae I knew before Squid Game.

As an Asian (but non Korean), its great to see Asian actors making a mark in the US market ( and the world). Hope to see many more in future.
I feel the same way! I hope we get a half Chinese actress become popular so my friends stop telling me I look like one of the three Asian actresses they know (none of whom I look like). So glad that the world is finding Asians and Asian cultures as admirable and beautiful.
@@mavsyers just know that you look how the future is going to look, being mixed. (I am half Chinese, quarter Italian, 1/8 native American, and 1/8 Swedish).

I completely agree! Even though I'm not Asian, I fully support diversity on all platforms. It's about time to have everyone tell their stories, share their art and enrich our psyche.
Me too. At least not just martial arts like Shan Chi (wanted a super hero proper laser eyes or something). I was reading Crazy Rich Asians when the movie came out and rushed to watch it (they changed some things in the book however it was great to see something without fighting scenes all the time).

Absolutely adore this interview. I understand its hard to have a back and forth, but the editing is killer and the translator did an amazing job. Exposing more int'l people and personalities to English and US viewers is so important! A million times yes! More of this!
Absolutely. One of the many things i like about being european is getting to meet people from all around. I used to live in lisbon, a major holiday destination, and now im in the uk. Love discovering what the day to day is like for people in other countries.
The amount of respect shown to JJ here is truly admirable.
FYI, she's more accurately called an interpreter (verbal comm) instead of translator (written comm)! :)
How can you be that elegant and that cute at the same time? He's one of my favorite actors anywhere. If you liked SG check out his other work! Nice job to Late Show crew for handling the editing of the translator's work so well. I know there had to be compromises for length, but it was clear and easy to follow.
Perfect description of him
I'm actually so annoyed that I'm only learning about this man now! He should have been known over here in the states already, he's freaking awesome!
This show is a f***ing masterpiece and EVERYONE should be nominated for Emmys.
It's tough for foreign language actors to get nominated. You look at the Oscars, and it's rare for foreign-language actors to be nominated, rarer still for them to win. Song Kang-ho and Park So-dam should have won for Parasite but neither was nominated.

Yes, but Jungjae already received a Gotham Award nomination. The Gotham Awards kick off the film/tv award season and are good predictors of bigger nominations like the Emmys.

The Korean language is just so beautiful it sounds so cool

As Vietnamese speakers, we often make fun of Koreans in how they "mispronounce" common words shared between our two languages. Because Korean speakers have a serious problem with consonants like "L/l", "N/n", and "R/r", which to Vietnamese speakers are clear and distinct.

Stephen is the man. Mr Lee is full of elegance as well. Loved this interview.
Agreed - I noticed how respectful and hospitable he was too. Truly a great host

Thank you for sharing. Not too many people realize that he was the Leonardo D. of S. Korea long before. This is great context.

I love his facial expressions during squid game. His character is so easy to love.
Stephen went viral with Rain a few years ago and even had a song in Korean. 🤣
The gentle, kind, humble, and charismatic nature that Lee displays should be a model on which modern masculinity is measured. Class act.
What a class act Lee Jung Jae is! Very smart, polite and humble.
I really appreciate how well prepared Stephen is for his interview. He asks good questions and is well informed about the actor.

I love what he said about the characters trying to reclaim their humanity that was taken away from them in such a competitive society.
I also love that he keeps taking video clips instead of pictures. 🤣🤣🤣
He’s so handsome! Such a good actor he literally almost looks like another person 😂
😄 Thanks so much.
I'm south Korean.
It's masking a lot of oppression. Korea is still extremely sexist, racist and homophobic.

He is such a beautiful man. I can't believe he's only a year younger than me. He looks at least 10 years younger. I didn't expect to love Squid Game as much as I did. I agree with Stephen, that the violence is cartoonish...it's the degradation of the characters (in and outside the game) that is terrifying.

Living in Korea, this was the image of Lee Jung-jae I knew: very classy, always well-dressed, a "cool guy" with an elegant way of speaking. The reason being was because every ad I saw him in, he was portrayed in that way.
The funny thing is that Squid Game was the first drama I saw him in, and he played an entirely different character than his usual roles.
