It's ok to judge a book by its cover, as long as we're not judging each other.
Welcome to the ellenmade book club!
Here you will find book reviews, book recommendations, booktube tag videos, and other kinds of bookish content, like reading vlogs, book hauls, wrap-ups and tbr videos :)
I like reading a variation of genres, including literary fiction, historical fiction, mystery and thriller, fantasy, magical realism and myth retellings. Sometimes I add a memoir or a classic to the mix! I usually prefer a female perspective and some emotional depth. Cultural or psychological insights, social justice themes, and entertaining stories.
In an effort to diversify my reading, I'm hosting The Diversity Book Bingo! You are very welcome to join, whatever level you're at.

Hope for the new year would be a good thing. I definitely support your desire to have a balanced mix.
I'm holding on to hope for us all! 💜
@ 🙏🏻❤️
I'm still focused on finishing up my 2024 reading, but it looks like my first read of the new year will be Doppelganger by Naomi Klein. It's for my nonfiction book club, which meets on the 2nd. Looks like you have a good mix for January. I hope your fun book is actually fun! (Yes, I've also heard mixed reviews, but sometimes it can be freeing to go in with low expectations.) (And I've read Malibu Rising. I liked it, but I would not categorize it as fun.)
Yeah I definitely have some lose ends as well! I've heard good things about Doppelganger, I don't think I'm intrigued to read it, but I hope you enjoy it! That's cool to have a nonfiction book club, I would probably benefit from that. I keep thinking I want to read more nonfiction, but I need to find the right ones for me. Haha I hope so too! I'm not expecting literary excellence, so as long as it's a bit fun I'll be happy. I think... I guess we'll have to wait and see! 😊 Happy New Year!
That looks like a good mix to start off the year. I hope they're all hits. I'm particularly interested to hear what you make of Cross My Heart because I had that on my radar from one of your previous videos. I've read Malibu Rising and Assistant to the Villain and liked one but not the other. I won't say which, but I won't be reaching for romantasy any time soon :) I also got hold of An Ember in the Ashes and Crawdads recently. I don't do TBRs but have made a 2025 list of books I want to read for various reasons. That said, I've just started 3 books that caught my eye on Libby (Babylon Berlin, Quantum Radio and Nuclear War) so they'll be a chunk of what I read in January. I hope you had a lovely Christmas and have a happy New Year!
Thank you, I hope so too! 😊 Yes, Cross My Heart is a priority, I'm hoping it's fun and suspenseful! Haha I think I can guess even with that very difficult clue ^^ I'm just hoping for some lightheartedness, but we'll see if I feel uplifted or annoyed by the end of it! 😄 Quantum Radio sounds really interesting! There are a few different Babylon Berlins, but I'm guessing Nuclear War is the new release? "A scenario"? That sounds horrific and interesting as well. Very dark but they sound good. I hope you'll enjoy them. And I would love to know what's on your list for 2025! I had a very chill Christmas, thank you, and New Years is looking that way as well! Happy New Year to you, and thank you for sticking around, I always enjoy hearing from you! 🥳
I've been wanting to start An Ember in the Ashes but I feel like I need to finish at least a couple more series before I start it 😅I love how simple your prompts are because I feel like you can use them to your advantage haha I need to just write my own as well 😂 I always aim for a 5 star January and read the books that I think I will love that I've been putting off 😊 You've got a great list!
Definitely finish some other series first! I'm in no rush to get to it, I was just very happy to find it so cheap, since I've been wanting to read it! 😊 Haha they are a bit more flexible than the fantasy oriented cards, but yours are fun too! And sometimes mine are way to broad, and no help at all. But I've been thinking I should sort some out and just keep the ones that would make me happy to get, but then there's no suspense 😆 It's fun either way! Aiming for a 5 star January is such a good way of doing things, I tried to go for some anticipated reads, and some just for fun, so hopefully I landed on a good mix. Time will tell! 😄
Great finds, I really want to read An Ember in the Ashes, that’s awesome that you found it secondhand! Looking forward to buddy reading Homegoing 😊 Love to start the year off with a fun book, I’ll be curious to hear your thoughts on Assistant to the Villain because I’ve heard mixed things too. And yay for a veto, it’s not a TBR jar video without one 😂 Looks like a great lineup for January!! Besides Homegoing, I have no idea what I’ll be reading… Definitely planning to do the TBR jar though and hopefully it will help me decide haha
I was so happy! I found it in one of the shops that never has anything good, and the good shops didn't have anything that day, so just goes to show you have to be everywhere all the time! 😆 Me too! Maybe Homegoing won't be the most fun start, but hopefully a strong start. And then AttV will hopefully balance it out! Such a weird mix, but I'm here for it. I should just put in a veto as a rule at this point haha! I look forward to seeing what you pick for January, I always love a TBR jar video ^^ I always forget to leave some space for mood reading though, and I'm also using my library more these days so I need to take that into account as well, when random reservations come in... anyways! 😄 Thank you for watching and being here and always leaving the nicest comments and being such a good friend! Happy New Year! 🥳💜
Did you like the Miniaturist? Pretty and Gold were my favorites prompts lol
I loved it! It's been a few years since I read it now, but really enjoyed the writing and the atmosphere. Haha I agree! Great vibes from the TBR Jar this time around! 😄
a great stack!!! my first book of 2025 will either be Transcendent Kingdom (same with your Yaa Gyasi, it’s been on my tbr all year and I haven’t read it yet) or A Love Song For Ricky Wilde if I‘m more in a romance mood
Those are great options! If I were to read a romance, I would probably try Tia Williams or Kennedy Ryan. Let me know what you think of it if you get to it! And/Or Transcendent Kingdom! 😄 Happy New Year, and thank you for sticking around! I always enjoy hearing from you! 💜
Why not read all the best books in one month? Don't save the good books for later! Life is too short! Read the good books now! Read only the good books XD Happy New Year! It's been so great to find your channel this year and do our buddy reads and become friends and all ^^ So grateful for it all! Take care 💛
Haha I know, I know, I know! I'm working on it! 😆 I guess I just choose to many books each month, so if I have some that are easier to skip, it's more likely I'll actually read the predicted favorites..? Spacing out potential disappointment? Don't ask me for a rational explanation for this ridiculous behavior! 😆 At least I picked some fun ones! I'm so grateful for you too! And even though I'm slow to respond sometimes, I still think about responding all the time and hoping you're well! Happy New Year to you too! 💜🥳
So many good choices for you in January. I look forward to hearing what you think of House of fortune, if you get to it. I have it on my shelves. I put Memoirs of a geisha on my pile of possibilities for January (spoiler for my next vidro) but am feeling unsure about it. Happy New year 🎉 ✨️
I really hope to get to House of Fortune, I've been wanting to read it FOREVER or at least since I read the Miniaturist. Just hope I don't have to reread the first one, ain't nobody got time for that! I think Memoirs of a Geisha will be great, it's just a matter of spacing out the heavy/long ones for me, and I guess I want to start the year on a more positive and fun note! Even the prompts seemed to agree! 😄 Go with your gut and follow the fun! Happy New Year Bryndis! 💜🥳
I had Malibu Rising in my hand at the used book store last week, but put it back because I actually had a little self restraint that day and it was not what I had gone there for. Perhaps if you like it, I'll pick it up next time.
Oh I would have picked it up! Obviously! 😄 I'll let you know what I think of it when I get to it!
The first prompt of the year being fun is perfect, I love it! Looking forward to seeing you have all of the fun reading in 2025 💕🎉
I can only agree! 😄 I hope you have a fun reading year in 2025 as well, and that you’re doing ok and getting all the rest and joy this holiday season! 🥰💜

Hi I'm 14 years old I can't read books can you help me please 😔
@@Dowlatmah Hi I’m sorry to hear that. I’m not sure how I could help you.
Merry Christmas!! I'm now back taking my seat now that I have finished Us Against You. I gave it another solid 5⭐ I just love love love his writing -- thank you so much for introducing me to him. I enjoy the serious topics with the dark comedic break he puts into his books 😍 I'm really glad that I actually skipped out on these videos for spoilers because it made the book more impactful! I really agree that his characterizations is AMAZING. They're so real, and they really feel like humans we would see in and encounter in real life. To me, I can really see these characters exist outside of the book and I root for the good ones so much 🥺 I agree that the first book is more impactful, while the second book feels like the fall out or Backman's view of the domino effect of a major event. And then we get more depth on characters and how people's actions no matter how major or minor can impact adjacent person (in relation to Leo... how he was such a good brother but that ultimately led him down the wrong path because of the people around him, their actions.... namely his absentee father. I could go on and on about the GM). But yes, I agree, it feels a little more disconnect in terms of the story. I agree with how Backman wrote the female coach. I absolutely loved it because it kind of calls me out on my own set of expectations. And when she's revealed as the coach, I'm blown away by how he was able to do that! Likewise, I expected the coach to be a male from the set of actions. Really had me rethinking how I perceive things. A big take away I really liked from Backman about Benji's sexuality is how he actually didn't want to be treated as anyone special. But it felt like the town's sudden realization that he is gay means he's now going to want special treatment or recognition when that really isn't the case with many people. Great discussion as always! It was a fantastic read, and I agree with your criticisms of the book feeling like it's a bit more of an extension than a strong individual book
Welcome back! 🥰 I'm so happy you're loving his writing! And I love that too, the serious topics and the random humor, it's so well balanced. I'm chuckling one minute and choking up the next. I love how he writes characters too. I love how it's focused on their internal lives, their memories and motivations and experiences, rather than what their hair color is or what they're wearing or whatever, unless it says something very important about them. And it all makes sense, based on who they are. It's so well done. What do you mean by "GM"? I really enjoyed the book though, but more for the writing itself and the additional insights I think, than the actual story. The coach was so well done! 😆 Especially since it tied into people's expectations of what a coach should be, and he did that to the reader, just to make that point even stronger. Even though we didn't maybe expect that character to be the coach at all, I was thinking it was some other sinister figure, but he still created an expectation that was then turned on its head, and it was just so good! It would have been so easy to get on a high horse about the whole thing, but it was impossible to do after that, when you've been sucked into it yourself. I agree about Benji! And at the same time he did already get special treatment from being a good hockey player, which was what I felt wasn't addressed as much, but of course he just wanted to be himself and for people to realize he was still the same person that they had always known. It's probably a very tricky thing to write, there's always going to be some aspect of it that doesn't get into the story in a natural way, and it's not an essay on the topic, it's a work of fiction, so that's fine. Just thought-provoking, in a good way. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on it! And I'm so glad you're enjoying the series! 🥰💜
I missed the premiere 😢. I love this bingo card challenge! 🫶🏽. Thank you for sharing Ellen!
@@books_and_bocadillos No worries at all! Thanks for watching, and you’re welcome to join in however much you want! 😊 Merry Christmas! ❤️🎄

Agreed! One month is so hard for me especially because I use the library a lot -- sometimes I can't get the book I want in the time frame 😅 I also made a 25 list for 2025 and one of them is Piranesi!! It's a priority for me in 2025 since I feel like I never had a chance to get around to it this year. I'm excited to see what you think about Things Fall Apart. I might reread it again in 2025 as well to check off your Diversity Bingo as well 🤩 The Mountains Sing is also on my 25 in 2025 -- I love seeing our overlap. I totally feel you though 😩My TBR is never ending, especially good books never stop. I have such a long backlog from authors I've started loving (eg. Fredrik Backman), that I don't know if I'll ever catch up LOL.
Yes exactly! I really want to use my library more in 2025, they have so many books I want to read, in English as well. And so far I've suggested a bunch of purchases, and they've bought three of my suggestions so far! It's almost a game at this point, trying to keep my acceptance rates up! 😆 I'm so excited for you to read Piranesi! I feel like it could go either way, but I'm very curious to see what you make of it 😊 I love our overlap too! We should probably also try to work some fun ones in there! 😄 Well let's hope we never catch up to our tbrs! That would mean there are no more good books left to read, and we don't want that! 😂 There's a new Backman coming out next year as well! In case you needed to add some more 😊
Hi Ellen! 😮what a list, theres a few on here ive read, like Things Fall Apart and The Kite Runner (both really interesting takes on colonialism and war). Theres also a few on my own shelf ive yet to pick up, I cant wait to hear your thoughts on them if you get chance to read them all :) I actually started The Handmaid’s Tale this morning, its interesting so far (my need for dystopia is well fed) but also sad, im a little nervous to see what happens 😅 I didn’t watch the show so im going in knowing very little. A note on Riley Sager, i just finished an audiobook of Middle of the Night and really enjoyed it. It may be worth checking the trigger warnings, but i was on the edge of my seat, gnawing through my desk (not quite), at every revelation and twist. I hope you’re doing well this holiday season, and cant wait to see what youre up to come the new year 🎉❤
Hi Elmo! I've had a very chill holiday season thus far and I'm planning on keeping it that way! 😊 I hope you've been able to celebrate and/or rest a bit as well, inbetween all the work! 💜 How are you getting on with The Handmaid's Tale? The show is so gorgeous and so suspenseful, and also horrific, which I'm assuming the book is as well. I look forward to reading it. I've only heard people not really liking the Middle of the Night, so good to hear you liked it! And from what people say, the Only One Left is one of his best, so that's promising. Trying not to get my hopes up too much though! Always comes back to bite me! 😄
What an amazing challenge! Though I must admit it made my head spin listening to this, lol! I'm sure I can figure it out and accomplish a few prompts at least!
@@sueysbookbanter Haha sorry! 😄 I think you’ll get the hang of it! There’s a Part Two linked in the description with examples, if that helps. And you can always ask of course. As long as it inspires you to read diversely, you’re good! 😄
Awesome pile of book plans! Good luck with all!
@@sueysbookbanter Thank you!
Wonderfully thought out challenge and prompts! Love this Ellen ❤️
@@good_tired Thank you so much! I think it will be fun! 🥰💜
Looks like you are going to have a great and varied reading year in 2025! Great list. Boy Parts is one of my favs and most memorable books from this year, it's so layered! Hope you enjoy it! Hopefully The Last Unicorn turns out to be enjoyable since the cover spoke to your soul, lol 😆 it is a very pretty cover!
@@KimReadsandReviews I’m excited! 😁 Ooh that’s good to hear, thank you, I can’t wait to read it! Haha yes, anything with purple and turquoise on it… I think those are the colors of my soul 😆
I read The Color Purple this year and it’s one of my favorite reads of the year, so I hope you will love it too!
@@theknightssayme That’s good to hear, thank you! I look forward to it! 😊
Fantastic selection!🥰
@@TheLinguistsLibrary Thank you! I’m excited! 😄
Looking forward to my My Sister the Serial Killer and the Remains of the Day
@@TheLinguistsLibrary Haha that’s a weird combo, but then so is the entire list! 😄
What a great list, Ellen. I've been wanting to read Riley Sager too. I've never read anything by him. You have several books on this list that I used to teach, and I'd love to talk with you further about them when you get to them, like The Kite Runner, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Color Purple. I did read Our Wives Under the Sea last year. It is a very weird book but also quite compelling. I really want to read her newest novel, Private Rites. This is a terrific list, and I will look forward to hearing your thoughts about them all.
@@BookChatWithPat8668 Thank you! I’m excited! As long as I pace myself with the heavier topics and mix it up with the more fun ones, I think it will be a great year of reading. And mixing in some surprises as well of course! I look forward to discussing them with you! I like a bit of weird, as long as it’s not too scary, which I’ve been told it’s not, I’m looking forward to it! 😊
@@ellenmadebookclub oh definitely not scary-just really strange! Yes, mixing it up is the way to go!
@ Windows and mirrors, and funhouses! 😄
@ yes!!!
My sister the serial killer- I wouldn't say it was amazing but it did read it in one sitting because it was quick and I wanted to know what happened haha. I want to re-read a bunch of books I "read" in school like Things Fall Apart as an adult because I think I would actually get something out of it this time around 😅 Bunny is a wild ride! It feels like a fever dream at certain points and I still don't know how I feel about that book haha I definitely want to read more Chuck Palahniuk- if you want to buddy read Fight Club, let me know 😊 I am not sure I will get to The Last Unicorn before 2025 so that might be on my list as well 😬You have a great list! Mine will also be super eclectic haha
@@adarkcornerofthelibrary Yes I feel like I just want the experience of reading it, I don’t expect it to rock my world. Just seems like a fun time to me! I’m so excited about this whole lost honestly, there are some that are more dense and heavy, but I think I will find value in all of them. Can’t wait to see your list! Mine would be 500 if I could read that much in a year but 25 will have to do for now 😂 I might be up for a buddy read of fight club or the last unicorn! I’m trying not to over-commit at the moment, but if the timing is right that would be fun! 😄
Count me in! This will work well with my read around the world challenge 😊 I love these prompts- lots of wiggle room to find a great book! I already have an idea of some books I want to read 👀 It''ll be nice to be more intentional with what I read so thank you for putting this together!
Awesome! 😊 Yes wiggle room is key! 😄 I can’t wait to see what everyone will read, myself included haha, there are so many great options. I put a challenge up on storygraph as well, if you use that, a bit of an afterthought so I didn’t mention it in the video, but it’s there if you want it 😊
Curious to hear what you think of Kaikeyi. I had really high hopes for it and ended up a bit disappointed personally. I'd be really curious to read Fight Club to, but I might settle on re-watching the movie -- it's been a while since I saw it the last time!
@@Curious-Cat I don’t have super high expectations I don’t think, just curious to try it! Fight club I definitely want to read, I’ll let you know if it’s worth it 😊
What a great list, I hope you can get to all of these!! Several of these are on my physical/general TBR so maybe we could plan some buddy reads if it lines up 😊 Educated, Kaikeyi, Gods of Jade and Shadow, The Last Unicorn, and The Only One Left (I need to find a really good thriller too)! And I’m planning to film my 25 in 2025 video sometime over the next couple of weeks ❤️
I can’t wait to see your list! 😊 I thought you had read Educated already? Maybe it was just mentioned on another list video at some point? 😄 That happens! That’s one I think would be good to buddy read at some point.
@@ellenmadebookclubYay! Oh and I own The Kite Runner too, forgot about that one! Haha I did talk about Educated, but only because I picked it up from a little free library, I haven’t read it yet! That would definitely be a good buddy read and I’ll need at least one memoir/nonfiction for the bingo board 😉
@ Haha exactly! 😄 Kite runner is also an option!
@@ellenmadebookclub for sure! Down for any of these at any time really so you let me know! ❤️ When do you think you’ll start Homegoing? The beginning of January, or later in the month?
@ Probably pretty early, maybe like 2-12? Something like that?
Youre video quality is good but you are not get more views because of these SEO problem, if you want I can fix this problem.🎉🎉🎉🎉
Again, no thank you.
@@ellenmadebookclub 😂😂😂 he's everywhere
I really liked My Sister the Serial Killer. Definitely worth the read.
Good to know, thank you! 😊
Good luck with these! So many good ones here. To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favourites. I hope we have a good reading year. So much to look forward to!
Thank you! I’m hoping we’ll have a great reading year too 😊
This is such a creative and fun bingo!! I've already got quote a few books in mind for the prompts 😊 this makes me excited for my reading in 2025!
Thank you! I'm so glad you feel that way, it's meant to be fun 😊 and a bit of a challenge, of course! I'm excited to see what everyone will read!
okay this might be a challenge i can ACTUALLY do!! Thank you for being a bit more lax with the rules/guidelines because it makes it less intimidating to join in!! This is such a well-devised idea too, can't wait to see how your book bingo journey goes! 🥰
@@love.lauren... Of course you can! 😄 It’s completely up to you, my goal is just to do a little better than I did this year and keep it a bit more top of mind. Romance and mangas will count too, as long as there is some diversity in there! 😄 And I know you read other things too of course. I’m excited too! 😄 Thank you for the support!
I’ve had a scattered year so don’t feel bad about one month😊 happy holidays. Aloha.
@@MarilynMayaMendoza Yeah it’s been a weird one! It’s how it goes sometimes 😊 Happy holidays to you too! 💜
Ellen, I am not familiar with TheStoryGraph... do I need to track my reads through that platform or could I simply download the board you created and track my progress on it? Thanks!
You can absolutely use just the bingo board! The Storygraph is just to have a place to collect suggestions, but it's not necessary at all.
@ awesome. Just watching your example video for 2024 and that’s most helpful. love that you used symbols for the diversity and continent categories 👏🏻
@@Uncommon_Reader Great, I'm glad you found it helpful! Symbols make everything more fun! 😄
Oh this looks really fun and interesting! I will be printing out the card later. Thanks for doing this!
@@TheLibraryMouseGina Thank you! I would love for you to join in! I hope it will be helpful and fun 😊
Hi Ellen, what a smart challenge, I will give it a try! Also, I tried to tag you on a booktag a couple of weeks ago but your channel wasn't highlighting, I had the same problem last week, but luckily Pat came to the rescue and helped me out with my settings.. I tagged you now again, but you may have already done the Used Bookstore Tag?
@@Uncommon_Reader Hi Daniela! Thank you, I would love for you to join in! 😊 Yes Pat said she could tag me, so I changed my settings and let her know how to do it, because she said it was the same for someone else, so I guess that was you! 😄 I haven’t done that tag, I think it’s on my list of tags to catch up with, I’ll check it out!
@@ellenmadebookclub Yes, that was me. I had my mention settings correct when looking at them from my computer but when I opened the RUclips APP on my phone they were set on OFF so I changed that, but I was surprised as I assumed they would be somehow synched. Glad I could re-tag you, and that tag is not time sensitive so take your time! Going to sign up for the challenge and also re-watch the video and take notes on all the rules 😊It suits me well as next year I was anyway planning to read new authors, and 25 books is not too big of a challenge, so... thank you!
@@Uncommon_Reader Yes, she said! That was so weird, of course they should be synced. I blame it on the RUclips Christmas Ghosts! 😄 Perfect! Yes and the minimum is 6, and the rest is up to you. I look forward to seeing what books you will read!
@ I’ll definitely have updates and mention you on future videos 😊
ellen!! this is amazing!! going to print out the challenge and add to my reading journal for next year 🎉 this was so well put together & im looking forward to diversifying my reading in 2025 💃🏽
@@daniella-raye Thank you! 😄 I’m so glad you want to join! 💜
This is such a great Bingo Board! I struggle to read diversely and think this board will help with that! Thanks for sharing!
Oh I'm so glad you like it! I hope it helps you and me both! 😄 I tend to think I read more diversely than I actually do, so this will hold me accountable! You're welcome to join or check out the Storygraph challenge (added as an afterthought!) if you ever need some inspiration!
@ellenmadebookclub Already joined the Storygraph! LOL I don't function well without Storygraph for challenges.
@ Oh great! 😄 It’s the first one I’ve done so let me know if anything’s off 😊
This is so fun! I just joined the Storygraph challenge and printed off the bingo card!
Oh yay! Thanks for joining and for letting me know someone has printed the bingo card! 😄 That made it all worth it! 😊 I can't wait to see what books you and whoever else add!
