#idm #modularsynth #leftfield Today's jam was recorded right after learning of David Lynch's death. Lynch was a film maker, musician and artist who I very much admired. So this melancholic, cinematic jam is a salute to him. Thank you KwalityStreet! And oh yes! Definitely, I should have mentioned Blue Velvet. Fantastic film indeed!! Rossellini was wonderful in it. As was Dean Stockwell. And as Lynch said himself, Denis Hopper was born to play the role of Frank Booth. There were 3 memorial screenings of Blue Velvet in my city. All 3 sold out immediately. I find that hard warming. Anyway, did you watch anything specifically to commemorate Lynch's life?

    I'm surprised I haven't seen this youtube dB reduction mentioned before. I've often found I have to crank up the speakers when I really shouldn't have to, and sometimes even resort to using a browser volume app, then get blasted when playing back an audio file or web radio station afterwards.

    • @electronictiger
      @electronictiger 17 дней назад

      The -14 dB LUFS loudness target has been around for a few years on RUclips. And the principle of that is good. If you're ever curious, right click a video and choose 'stats for nerds'. Under the Volume/Normalized header you can see how much the volume gets adjusted by RUclips. If you're old enough, you may remember that the commercials on TV always appeared to be way louder than the program you were watching. The loudness target levels that out. Giving less extreme volume jumps. But a downside is exactly what you experience; You have to crank the volume. This is especially true for very loud programs. They get played back a lot quieter. And because they have less transients, they are harder to hear. Often sounding duller in comparisons to less squashed material. And then there is the moment something that doesn't adheres to the loudness standard when you've got the volume cranked, you get blasted indeed. Which sucks!

  • @maikvanrossum
    @maikvanrossum 18 дней назад

    Would it be possible to trick the algorithm by adding some ‘on-beat spikes’ within a very low frequency range? So the algorithm would respect the overall dynamics of a track, as it wouldn’t raise the volume of the quieter parts…?

    • @electronictiger
      @electronictiger 18 дней назад

      No, I don't think that would work. The LUFS system is based on the perception of human hearing. And our hearing is sensitive in the mid range, and far less sensitive to the top and bottom. With the high end going further and further away as you age. So when it's measuring how loud something is, the upper and lower frequencies are less of a factor in determining the loudness of the incoming audio. So adding low frequency spikes would only eat up headroom. As the mastering compressor, and all the electronics do need to process that energy.

  • @Alexander_Kale
    @Alexander_Kale 18 дней назад

    The only reason why I even found this video is because I suddenly noticed youtube sound sounding.... off somehow. At first, I was worried my headset was broken. But after firing up my music player and listening to some songs I know by heart this didnt seem to be the case. Then I noticed the "stable volume" thing which I had never noticed before. SO yeah, something seems broken in the state of youtube...

    • @electronictiger
      @electronictiger 18 дней назад

      Yes, I also started to doubt my ears and equipment at first. But when things outside of RUclips sounded normal, it was easy to find the culprit. It's unfortunate that RUclips applies Stable Volume to music. Their systems can detect music perfectly fine. So they could easily automate that it defaults to off when playing music. Instead of ruining it. If enough people turn it off, they'll take notice, I'm sure. And hopefully fix the problem. Thanks for stopping by Alexander!

    • @KwalityStreet
      @KwalityStreet 14 дней назад

      @@electronictiger I understand completely, and the fact that it does require concentrating makes it more rewarding as you need to be in the flow for it to work. Can I ask you how you use the Novation Launchpad - are you triggering midi sequences directly from it or are the sequences on a DAW or elsewhere?

    • @electronictiger
      @electronictiger 14 дней назад

      @KwalityStreet Yes, exactly! It's fun to concentrate on something hard. And get lost in that for a while. Especially when it is something you enjoy doing. The launchpad is controlling my hardware sequencer, the Vector by Five12. You can launch preprogrammed 'clips' with it. Though, I'm mostly using 1 clip per synth. And editing that 'clip' on the fly. Rather than relying on preprogrammed material. When you see a fast blue line moving on the launchpad then you're seeing the trigger and pitch information for that 'clip'. The horizontal axis are the steps in the sequence. And when a step is lit / bright it contains a trigger that is sent out to a synth. The vertical axis is the pitch information. Does that answer your question? Should you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I'm happy to try to explain.

    • @KwalityStreet
      @KwalityStreet 14 дней назад

      @@electronictiger Thanks for that. I've a couple of keyboard midi controllers but no pad controller so was looking around at budget controllers which I could use in a 'dawless' (albeit with a computer) set-up which are intuitive to set-up and use and aren't all about Ableton live. Message Brian Eno about minimising sounds to maximise sounds, or look to see if he has a website. Anyway if you need to know something about studio sounds or synth sounds Bri is the guy 🙂

    First off, congrats on the Piston Honda! I hadn't heard of the Hertz Donut before, I want to look it up now. The section where you were transposing notes on the launchpad was great to see what you were doing and hearing it change the notes in real time. The jam was great, as always, one very small note, the drums felt a little low in the mix for me overall. Otherwise, keep doing what you are doing 😊

      Thanks mate! I think it may be the way forward for me. To play the Vector in real time like that. It was fun to do, and it let to different musical path that I would not have traveled otherwise. It's good you say about the drums being too low. I hadn't noticed it myself. It's stuff I find very difficult to balance properly. So I definitely appreciate your feedback on that!

      Meow, meow. The cat desperately wanted attention while I was doing this jam. It was kind of distracting, really. But afterwards I proceeded to pet him and all was good again in his world.

    Can really feel the LFO Arpeggio technique at play here, feels really good to listen to and is super interesting. I'm with you on the guilt of unused stuff, luckily mine is all VSTs in folders so I don't have it looking right at me ha. If I think of any labels, I'll let you know. Wishing more success in 2025!

      Thank you kindly mate! Yeah, having clutter, be it digital or physical, can be a real source of irritation and inspiration. Finding that piece of (software)gear you haven't used in a while. And going this is exactly what I need right now. The real downside the physical gear is that it takes up space in a way you can't solve by upgrading to a bigger hard drive.

    Great stuff, matey. I'm not personally experienced in releasing anything lately (other than some CDs a thousand years ago) but I think BandCamp does physical media, as well as streaming whatnots. IJO does cassettes and real records from time to time, for example. All the very best for the new year (is the cat doing OK?). Will keep watching... and listening :-) Cheers.

      @electronictiger Месяц назад

      Thanks again Sandy, I appreciate hearing that! The beats are coming from the Elektron Analog Rytm MKII. It's partially on screen, bottom right. The 12 white/greenish squares. It's an incredibly powerful drum machine! Does that answer your question?

    Very nice !! Do you remaster the song after the session ? It sounds really good.

    • @electronictiger
      @electronictiger Месяц назад

      Thank you MrBellagras! No, yes, kinda. I don't do a lot after the session. But I do spend quite a bit time before I hit record setting everything up. So when I'm playing it sounds pretty close to the final product. But there is definitely mixing & mastering involved.

    So cool! Thanks! I'm finally getting to the point where I can almost speak the Electronic language enough to understand how to make music with these machines. I have a Edge, a WASP, the new Model 15, and the MAVIS. Now I just have to put them all together in a coherent way. I need some kind of different Drum machine, and a different way to control things, other than the Keystep 37.

    • @electronictiger
      @electronictiger Месяц назад

      Thanks Sandy! Sound's like an excellent collection of synths you've got there! How is the MAVIS? Yes, the Keystep can be a bit basic. There are plenty of excellent hardware sequencers on the market today. But they aren't exactly cheap. At the same time, it's at the heart of your setup. So it's worth finding one that does what you want, and investing in. Thanks again!

      Yes, it's a wonderful little machine indeed! In the jam video I just put online I'm running the Pro-1 through my new Erica Synths' Black Polivoks filter. That's a tasty, tasty filter!!! Very different from the Pro-1's native filter. Check it out: ruclips.net/video/k23UeghUqA0/видео.html
