Can I save it from the SCRAP PILE? Repowering my abandoned tiller | Garage Story
Today I had an idea for a way to save my abandoned rototiller from going to the scrap yard! The tiller had a bad engine, but I have a running engine from a pressure washer that I think I can drop right in and bring my tiller to life again! But as always, the story doesn't end there; things don't go according to plan and we have issues come up, so we'll end up dismantling a couple of Briggs and Stratton push mower engines to diagnose the problems and find the right parts. Come along and see what we learn!

    I think bring the mower to the front away from all the junk mowers at the back gives a better first impression tbh when selling. Also just a tip when I’ve sold a mower or two 😄, take your lowest price and add what you think it would take to fix the issues the customer brings up, about the mower. Like you said, saying $1300 would have been a good idea.

  • @MrZimmaframe

    With the Kohler Courage engines, like the 19 and 20 models, the oil is almost always coming from the rear rocker cover gasket, unless the block is cracked on the left side from the bolts being loose. I didn’t Loctite my bolts but probably would help tbh. The second issues these commonly have are sloppy valve clearance issues, due to engine vibration, which if left for too long can cause the engine to not turn over when it reaches the compression stroke, because the loose rocker doesn’t press on the exhaust valve enough, to release the decompression mechanism inside. Normally the engine should spin over freely on startup. .007” gap for exhaust and .005” for intake. Remove spark plug and inset long screwdriver into cylinder and turn the engine over by hand watching as the valves move and the screw driver is pushed out the most. Sometimes it can look like the engine is at TDC but actually it’s on a different stroke. The way to check if it is at TDC is to check the valve clearance on both strokes to find which one has the most slop on both valves, and that is TDC. Also sometimes if the engine has been overheated the valve seals, usually just exhaust side can move, not allowing the exhaust valve two fully compress causing non-decompression starting issues. To resolve this, you have to apply compressed air into the spark plug hole to prevent valve from dropping in the cylinder, and then removing the valve spring to get access to the valve seal, and tapping it in by slipping over the valve stem with a socket, and tapping it with a hammer, to reset it correctly. The only other option is to remove the cylinder head to prevent valves going into the cylinder, when removing the valve spring. Hope this helps someone. 👍🏻

    Any time you have a metal valve cover like that where the bolt holes are pushed in like that the best way to fix it is to take a socket a little bit bigger than the hole on the flat side of the hole and use a small hammer and pean the hole back out flat.

  • @tombell5879

    Thank you for not quitting! Was hoping this might help with my issue. Nothing as complicated as what you dove into. I replaced my seat switch because the engine was dying when I pulled in the left handle. That did not correct it. Was preparing to load on trailer and take to shop, cut the grass. Next time it did it again. Not sure where to start. I'm just a 60 year old lady. Is there a switch in the left arm? Or any other ideas you might have. Thank you for doing a great job

    • @garagestory
      @garagestory 3 дня назад

      Yes, both arms should have their own safety switches. If it dies when you pull in the handle, I think that would mean the switch is working. Usually if pulling in the handle kills the motor, that’s because the system thinks the parking break is on. I have another video or two where I went into the electrical system further. Those might be of help possibly.

    A vital part of troubleshooting is understanding how a system works Fuel systems, ignition systems, sealing systems, propulsion systems, etc. are all part of the machine. Keep learning and your projects will get easier and better. You made a few assumptions but not many. Most of all you aren't afraid to THINK, and that's half the battle. The more you think and do, the more do, the more you will learn. Every bit of knowledge you gain is like adding another tool to your toolbox, and the more you learn the bigger your toolbox will be. I have put filters on a lot of heavy machinery, some vehicles, and some small engines. I would seriously look at switching to WIX filters for pretty much everything. FRAM used to be a quality filter, but now they are paper, cardboard and cheap materials inside. They can actually collapse and release what they've filtered out. You can look this up on several sites, one of which is Project Farm. I used to use them in the 80's. No longer. I also have this exact same model AYP built Husqvarna RZ4623, which was also given to me with the same problems as yours, drive problems and valve cover gasket leak. ... ummm, oops, this is what happens when you post before watching the whole video. LOL Nice choice on the WIX!

    I have this exact mower, also given to me with almost 300 hours on it, with exactly the same drive belt routing as yours had at first. Mine was working great, then instantly quit moving in the middle of a turn, both sides. I cannot move the idler pulley by hand, I have to tap on it with a hammer to tighten it. Then it moves. ? I also have the leaking left valve cover gasket, which I ordered 2 gaskets for both sides, just haven't installed them yet.

      Sounds like the pivot is frozen up on the tensioner arm! I ran across that being a fairly common issue when I was dealing with the belt being routed wrong.

      @@garagestory I've got to replace the deck belt today. I'll try to figure out the pivot on the tensioner arm at the same time. I looked around for a belt diagram for this model and haven't found one.
