  • This week I am finally fixing my Yazoo Kees (budget X-mark) zero turn so that it will be ready to sell, hopefully for a big profit! I've had this zero turn for a long time, and it has always had issues with the fuel system. I've cleaned the Kawasaki carburetor more times than I can count, but now I may have to take a different strategy and replace the fuel lines. But there turns out to be another fuel issue going on, which might stop me dead in my tracks!
    Welcome to Garage Story!
I'm in the business of hunting up old lawn mowers and other small machines, and either parting them out, or fixing them up and selling them for profit. Come along for the ride with my weekly vlogs, and how-to videos.

I know taking the fuel tank(s) off is preferred, but in a pinch, I have poured a 16oz bottle of isopropyl alcohol into the 15 gal tank to scavenge the water when I could tell there was water in the fuel and it's always worked out and saved a TON of time. So about ~ 4oz of isopropyl for a zero turn tank? The crud in the tank, nothing but flushing the tank will fix this. Even after several tank fulls, I still see some amount in the bottom of the tank.

I think bring the mower to the front away from all the junk mowers at the back gives a better first impression tbh when selling. Also just a tip when I’ve sold a mower or two 😄, take your lowest price and add what you think it would take to fix the issues the customer brings up, about the mower. Like you said, saying $1300 would have been a good idea.

I agree with Tony - any machine that you work on should have the fuel tank removed, emptied completely, washed, rinsed well and blown out. Also, any right angle connections in the fuel system (in this case the fittings at the bottom of both tanks plus the directional valve) should be blown out and confirmed that they have no blockages. These things would probably have solved all your problems from the beginning. I'm guessing the fuel lines, pump and carb didn't need to be replaced - only the carb needed to be cleaned.
One other thing - any water in a system that has a paper filter will block fuel from going through. It's always a good idea to drain tanks completely and check for water. This will tell you whether the carb still has water in it and if the filter (which might look clean) is suspect.
One of my next purchases will be an endoscope so I can examine fuel tanks on the inside to really know what condition they're in (as well as engines, of course!).

I didn’t mention it in the video, but I made sure I could hear air coming through my gas caps. That certainly can be an issue that is an easy fix, but I don’t think that was my issue. Changing the fuel lines seemed to fix it.

Actually, I thought maybe it would eventually work out of the fuel system. But perhaps I would have to add some alcohol or something to help it emulsify.

I try to be straight forward about anything l sell, but that's not good enough for most buyers these days. Most people want things for half what the value is, the used value, not new value. l have got to the point where l just ask why are you here wasting both our time when what l was looking for price wise was clearly stated.

I do have a 300 series sitting out in the mower yard, maybe that’s what you saw? I think it’s a 325, and it’s missing the hood. All the others Deeres are 200’s or below, I believe
