  • Today I am comparing the top features that set commercial zero turns apart from residential, home owner zero turns. Which is right for you? Should you get a new residential mower or a used commercial? Hopefully this video helps you answer these questions!
    Welcome to Garage Story!
I'm in the business of hunting up old lawn mowers and other small machines, and either parting them out, or fixing them up and selling them for profit. Come along for the ride with my weekly vlogs, and how-to videos.

One thing also on the decks, the yahzookee has 3 cutting blades, which they are shorter and stronger and gives a better cut :)

Comparing an entry-level residential vs entry-level commercial zero turn will probably help quite a few people make their minds up. I'll pick the commercial one any day of the week just due to the far superior drive system that is made to last. The all-in-one drive motors on the residential time cutter are pricey and rarely last more than 800 hours from what I've seen.
What I currently have is on the other end of the spectrum. An Ariens/ gravely prosumer 22 hp with the same drive system as your yazoo but a stamped deck and an older top of the line exmark with a liquid cooled Kawasaki. It all comes down to how much you have to mow and what you can afford. But in the end build quality and long term lifespan is far superior on most commercial mowers. That little timecutter won't likely be around in 10 years of regular use the Yazoo will.

It sounds like you have a couple of good mowers.

It depends on how much grass you have to cut making the decision a big difference between the two of the mowers what you need to spend

It’s a no brainer for me - commercial and older any day over residential, shiny and newer.
Older machines in general will almost always be better built and last longer.
Commercial are designed to withstand heavier use and abuse.
The hours on that YK are nothing. I’d expect it to go 4 times that amount.
I’d prefer to rebuild or replace bearings over bushings. I’d prefer to grease zerks over replacing worn shafts. I’d prefer sophisticated air filtration which ensures longer engine life and oil filters over non-filtered.
Worn out seat, faded paint and leaking tires are normal replacement/repair items, so no big deal in the overall scheme of things.
In general I’d prefer to put my money into something that’s going to last rather than rot out from under me in a predictable few years.

The question answers itself. The additional cost is pennies per use over the cost of the equipment over its usable life.
When I was a kid my dad spent $400 for a 24 inch Reo reel mower. A rotary 18 inch mower cost $100 or less. I used that Reo mower until college on almost two acres of lawn.

Yes, in general it seems that you get better value from a commercial mower. Not only do they last longer, but they do a better job and are easier to use. Unfortunately not everyone can afford one when they need a mower…

Yeah there’s a big difference between the two, I like the easy access to replace parts on the the better mowers as well. Keep up the great content. Thx!

      Glad I could help!
The Cub Cadet RZT 50 is a residential mower. I’m not sure what the ZRT 50 is.

Keeping the mower out of the elements will help last a lot longer .

If you live in town a good estate type mower, if you mow 5 acres like I do you better get something very close to a commercial grade mower. Thing is commercial mowers a much heavier so a good residential mower might not be a bad option on smaller properties like a city lot or an acre or two. Btw looks like you live near Miami Oklahoma, I’m in Miami county Ks. Now get back in the shop!

I really like the weight of the commercial mowers, I think it makes them feel more planted and get better traction. Maybe some smaller yards could get damaged more easily with the weight. My yard is 2 acres so I’m kind of at the point where I would be fine with a residential mower for a while, but I prefer commercial mowers.
I’m central Oklahoma, but I’ve been through the Miami area many times. It’s beautiful up there!
