I think it’s fair for people to believe that I go at least a little overboard with some of these results, but considering how we already get more upsets in these tournaments than ever before, there’s definitely some wiggle room for a few to happen here

Not to say this means it’s gonna be any good at forecasting the actual tournament but there’s some logic in a sense to every choice I made in this video. I just wouldn’t put a bet on any of it (other than for Hungary to win or something, might get decent odds on that!) Group stages are very chaotic, though, and I wanted to acknowledge that here. The final group standings in the most recent World Cup and AFCON were pretty unconventional in a lot of cases themselves. Since this is really the one point in the competition where teams can afford to slip up and rest players, we’re bound to get a good number of upsets. Obviously they’ll tighten up by the knockouts, which is why 6/8 round of 16 winners were the clear favourites in each case. The only ones that weren’t (Ukraine and Switzerland) qualified via a penalty shootout and because Croatia seems cursed to never make it past the Round of 16 here respectively. Two surprise teams reached the semis but the same happened with Croatia and Morocco in 2022 - they just happen to be on the same side of the bracket this time. Some of this does just boil down to me wanting to be different, but at the end of the day, this is just for fun, and vanilla predictions are just less interesting imo

A lot of people acknowledge Hungary as a threat but I don’t think they see the full potential they have to be dangerous in this tournament. If I’ve seen anyone considered a ‘dark horse’ lately then it would probably be Austria, but knowing how that moniker has worked out for Türkiye, Denmark and Serbia recently I didn’t want to send them too far. Hungary is more under the radar, but still has the potential to compete with a lot of these top teams. It helps that their side of the bracket is probably the easier one, were they to top their group. If you pit them up against Slovenia, Belgium and Ukraine in the knockouts then making them a finalist suddenly seems a lot more reasonable lol

⁠@@AlexGames306I kinda glossed over Belgium in the video, but to go more in depth, they will already be on 4 points by the time they play Ukraine and might feel pretty confident that they’ll qualify. This leads to them rotating their squad to give substitutes game time, which Ukraine capitalises on due to needing a result. As for Portugal, they got probably the easiest qualification group they could’ve gotten and walked all over it, but as a result, they haven’t really been properly tested since Morocco in 2022. Their relatively easy group doesn’t give them much more of that either. I can just see them getting humbled once they face a slightly stronger team, and Ukraine, who I could see being on a similarly passionate run to Denmark at the last Euros due to the conflict with Russia, could be the ones to do so. However, by the time they reach Hungary, everyone is tired and it becomes a toss up. I feel like this match would be decided by the first goal, and Hungary seems to get their goals earlier in matches, so they triumph over Ukraine. I don’t know whether anything like this will play out in reality, of course, but this is just how I see it happening.
