*AGAIN!* “I am not a Know-Nothing. That is certain. How could I be?…Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we began by declaring that ‘all men are created equal.’ We now practically read it ‘all men are created equal, except negroes.’ When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read ‘all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and catholics.’ When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty-to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocracy.” Abraham Lincoln 1855 letter to Joshua Speed Meet the Know Nothing Party: First Leader: Lewis Levin Founded: 1844 Dissolved: 1860 Headquarters: New York City Secret Wing: Order of the Star Spangled Banner Ideology: American Nationalism Right Wing Populism Anti-Catholicism Republicanism Nativism Political Position: Right Wing *Religion: Protestantism (Temperance)* Colors: Red, White, and Blue The name 'Know Nothing' was thrown at them by opponents and they loved it so much they adopted it as the official name of their Political Party. “Of all the animosities which have existed among mankind, those which are caused by a difference of sentiments in religion appear to be the most inveterate and distressing, and ought to be deprecated. I was in hopes that the enlightened and liberal policy, which has marked the present age, would at least have reconciled Christians of every denomination so far that we should never again see the religious disputes carried to such a pitch as to endanger the peace of society.” George Washington - letter to Edward Newenham, October 20, 1792

There is a lot to think through regarding this. My initial thoughts are that she is painting with pretty broad strokes, which might undercut some of what she is saying. The idea that someone might know better than me and can help me is what drives people to therapy and to seek spiritual guidance. How that can be seen as abusive or an abusive structure makes no sense to me. I get people can abuse that, but that isn't the fault of the system it is the fault of the person. Therapy, even more so than religion, is a relationship with a huge power deferential in that relationship, but we are not telling people to not go to therapy. Yes evangelicalism as a whole has a lot and I mean alot of abuse and traumatized people in that system. However there are a lot of really good non evengelical churches out there doing amazing work. We need to be carful how broadly we paint.

So much of this rings to my experience (went to Liberty early 2000's). I am an Evangelical that went to the Eastern Orthodox Church during my faith crisis/deconstruction (and back again... sorta). The apophatic theological (and spiritual) tradition played a huge role in that move and my faith now... glad to hear that idea at play here and other 'Post - evangelical' spaces and would love to see that explored more from this perspective.

This hearing should be recorded and the Church made accountable for their actions. I’m one of those people that’s in the gap. There is,t a Bible believing church in my city. Baltimore, MD…. Our affirming churches are Liturgical and don’t preach the gospel.. our few affirming churches are not regenerating. They’re basically on life support. Wonderful people that voted to affirm hoping to repopulate. A rainbow flag won’t regenerate a Church unless it has purpose. Praying to start a home fellowship that Loves without Labels. I’m a gay believer walking away from Evangelical Fundamentalist Biblicism leaving the church and taking the Lord with me…

I define “Deconstruction” as examining religion through the lens of logic, reason, validated history, and science rather than through the lens of “faith” that is based on “beliefs”. That leads rational people to the obvious conclusion that all religions, and their beliefs, are manmade.

What deflated my identity as a Christian was what I learned in a world history class when I was a freshman in college. A great teacher presented all the world religions without a Christian bias. I understood that the overwhelming majority of humanity follows the religion they were born into, and that included me. I felt that religion was too important to just accept it blindly like we accept our nationality and language. It didn't make sense that Christianity is the only TRUTH just because I was born into it. All religions sounded equally good and valid. So I became an agnostic until I moved to Utah and discovered a religion I'd never heard of before, a religion that teaches that all the great world religions have been inspired by the same Source, that these religions are united in a process of spiritually educating mankind through a series of Divine Educators like Jesus, Moses, Muhammed, Buddha, etc. They Each teach the people of their time according to their needs and capacity, just like teachers in a school. We receive the lessons we need at the time we need them. This religion is called Baha'i, and it originated in Persia in 1844. Baha'is follow a Divine Teacher, or Manifestation of God, named Baha'u'llah (Glory of God) who put into writing, over 100 books, teachings tailored to the needs of the new era we're now living in. Among His teachings are the oneness of humanity, the equality of women and men, the need to educate all children, the need for the nations to unite in order to end war, the harmony of science and religion, the need to choose, or create, a world language, the recognition of the oneness of religion, the elimination of prejudices. Baha'u'llah was opposed with force by both the religious leaders and governments of Persia and the Ottoman Turks. Baha'u'llah was exiled from place to place until He finally ended up in a prison in Palestine in 1868. For more information go to www.bahai.org I do not call myself a Christian, not because I don't believe in Jesus, but for the same reason Christians don't call themselves Jews. I call myself a Baha'i because it is all-inclusive. All Baha'is believe in Jesus, Muhammed, Moses, Buddha, Krishna as well as Baha'u'llah. Actually, my belief in Jesus is much stronger as a Baha'i than it was when I was a member of a Christian church.

This reminds me of spiral dynamics / Ken Wilbur. Much of the deconstruction movement is stuck in 'green' v 'orange'---postmodernity v modernity. The challenge is to see that the transcendent move is never one of rejecting the previous development but of incorporating it and transcending it. Each time we battle the stage below we fail to ask what it has to offer. Dont we see that dynamic in Jesus--in the Sermon on the Mount---so we retain the torah while also transcending it by going down deeper into it (eg murder is still wrong...but rage is the real problem). We might say 'nationalism MAGA is OK...But only as we see the deeper root we all share is: how do we create flourishing communities of belonging?'

I honestly wouldn't care if people want to worship ancient superstitions if all three of the Abrahamic's weren't end-time religions. Each of them are waiting for their version of a God, Prophet, or Messiah to come and throw billions of people into a lake of fire and reward the faithful with paradise. That's why they will not help humanity build a survivable future and that's what makes them the ultimate threat to the survival of our species. Let alone all life on Earth.

Wait a minute, at about 8:38 the interviewer says, "There's plenty of people I've wanted to burn at the stake." Oh really, please continue. That is murder in our society but as a man of God, please enlighten me. "The Pope has moved on," from what exactly? It's not Darwinism, it is an explanation of the natural world that cuts God out the picture. And my understanding of the late, great Hitchens has nothing to do with the "literalist" understanding of the Bible. My understanding of his work said your belief in an all powerful God is stupid. And Frank just sits there as this nonsense goes on and on. At the 15 minute mark I left.

I was Angela Barker/Briley's youth pastor. She is my oldest and one of my dearest friends. As a pastor of 30 years, I have discovered that I am entirely ok with mystery. I bend toward being a mystic type of person. So, I really don't sweat these beautiful ideas. I believe that everything within the "BIG" universe is so shrouded in mystery that I find it exciting. I enjoy the concept of a BIG God that I can't explain or wrap my head around. I enjoy knowing all my ideas or theology is lacking. Thanks again for a. great interview!

I have solidly nailed down a complex analog, numbering and verbiage pattern in the Bible. I call it the three/seven grid. It's in the background repeating a human life template for anyone who can interpret it and turn inward with it. Genesis starts a crazy analog farm that I have deciphered. Ages of 900 years, 800 years etc and guess what, they are each repeated seven times. They are pointing to other numbers in a simple number gathering system that is embedded in the story itself. We need the computer to see it because we don't have them deeply memorized. Memorized. Knows Genesis by heart. Deeply memorized? Knows Noah's name is said forty times in the story about a flood when it rained for forty days and nights and the Israelite's spent forty years in the desert and Jesus spent forty days in and it never ends. Imagine if it was their most advanced media, way, way before technology. I cannot get any attention with my find. It is too big for people in modernity to give it enough time to learn it. I need the computer to count for me. We have lost access to it but I can prove Abrahamic traditions are man made. But only to those who can see it. It is verbally encoded.

What I have a problem with the example of the forest and the connective consciousness - why it has to be god and must be from the outside why can't it be something that is a product of the physic and material world itself and therefore make god and physic and creation all the same but hey this would lead to the problem that everything is one and religions no longer can sell their propaganda.

Religious foolishness worships a false prophet and hates thinking which is why they hate science.. too stupid to understand it I guess

Sadly Young Earth Creationism makes Christians look very wrong, but they do not speak for all Christians. Biblical Hebrew has a smaller vocabulary than English. In biblical Hebrew, there is no word for universe. Instead, the Hebrew phrase that is translated “the heavens and the earth” is used to refer to the universe-the entirety of physical reality. The phrase is used thirteen times in the Old Testament, always referring to all matter, energy, space, and time in the universe. We now know that event was 13.787 ±0.020 billion years. This has been checked, proven and measured with many tools and they all agree. It is not just space that came to be 13.787 billion years ago, but time also. The universe is finite and expanding. Just as the Bible stated thousands of years ago. To deny the existence of a Creator is an error. The Testable Creation Model gets it all correct: The frame of reference in Genesis 1:1 is the cosmos, all of physical reality. God declares that he brought into existence the entire universe-matter, energy, and all the associated space-time dimensions. Einstein’s theory of general relativity tells us that the cause of the universe acts independently (i.e., from outside) of matter, energy, and the space-time dimensions along which matter and energy are distributed to bring it into existence. Observations now securely establish the reliability of general relativity. Genesis 1:2 explicitly shifts the frame of reference, the narrator’s vantage point, to the surface of Earth, above the waters but below the clouds. This verse describes the initial conditions of primordial Earth: dark on its surface, covered with water, empty of life, and unfit for life. With the frame of reference and the initial conditions for the six creation days thus established, a straightforward chronology of creation events unfolds: Planet Earth is singled out for a sequence of divine interventions. At its beginning, Earth is empty of life and unfit for life, and light cannot penetrate its thick atmosphere. As interplanetary debris cleared and early life began to transform Earth’s atmosphere, light from the heavenly bodies could penetrate to the surface. As water vapor formed in the troposphere, a stable water cycle formed. Continental landmasses arose and ocean basins took shape. Plants began to grow on the continental landmasses. The atmosphere transitioned from translucent to occasionally transparent so that the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars could be seen from the vantage point of Earth’s surface. Swarms of small sea animals filled the oceans. Sea mammals and birds were created and became abundant. Three specialized kinds of animals came onto the scene: short-legged land mammals, long-legged, easy-to-tame land mammals, and long-legged, difficult-to-tame land mammals-all three appropriate in specific ways to help meet humanity’s needs. Human beings appeared.

Believing religious text of the Abrahamic faiths as historically true has, and is having, devastating consequences. Don't religious liberals' tolerance of fundamentalism provide cover that reinforces its legitimacy?

I would love as a first step, to see the Bible arranged in the order in which the books were written, to change the overview, and give a clearer context. And to have history and culture and purpose explained at the beginning of each book. To me it would go a long way towards increasing understanding.
