    I know I am late to this, but I am unable to find anything on the difference between windy and Wendy. Is Wendy and windy a homophone or is there a distinct difference I can't hear?

    • @melaniehussell
      @melaniehussell Год назад

      Yes there is a difference. :-) In Wendy the first vowel sound is short 'e' as in egg/end/when. And in windy road it's a long vowel .'eye' or as in windy day, a short vowel 'i' . So 3 different vowels sounds! Hope this helps you.

    The vowel you say “owt/out” and “ drought” is not consistent. You open your mouth more when you say “out”. So it’s a little bit confusing.

    • @melaniehussell
      @melaniehussell 2 года назад

      Indeed you're right. It's because the vowel sound is at the beginning of the word so you need to open the mouth wider initially, whereas the mouth is already articulating (open) as you move from the 'dr' sounds to the 'out'. This happens with most of our longer words, but I've tried to find the simplest way of explaining it without getting into phonetics which can cause more confusion for many clients. From your name, perhaps you have many different sounds in your mother tongue than in English, so I'm so impressed with your perception here and willingness to learn. It's wonderful. So inspiring. Thanks for your comments!

    • @melaniehussell

      Sadly in English, there's sometimes no relationship bewteen the spelling and pronunication. So you need to learn each new word separately. Always best to learn how to pronounce it first and spell it afterwards but sadly that's not how often we're taught in schools/universities. Use a good online ditcionary to help, Longman or Macmillan or Cambridge.
