- How to improve English pronunciation: In this episode of Word of the Week, I will go over how to pronounce the word Drought. Drought is a word used to describe a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall, often leading to a shortage of water.
Pronouncing drought can be tricky as the spelling “OUGH” is pronounced seven different ways in the English Language. Yes! The pronunciation of English vowels can be a challenge. In this video, you will learn how to pronounce drought, what are the sounds in each syllable, and how to use drought in a sentence.
Not only is knowing how to pronounce English words correctly empowering, but it also means your listeners understand you first time and they can focus on your messages and not on understanding your words. Accent reduction is not necessary, but clarity of your speech is.

Then I read British literature and come across “draught” and told it’s pronounced “draft” haha, gotta love the English language. Cool fact about 7 ways to pronounce “ough.” Thanks
Indeed the hardest thing about learning English is its Pronunciation.
And you remind me (thanks) that I must make a video on 'ough' as it's a real nightmare for my clients and they avoid using so many words as a result.
Huge pity.
Clear, concise, and extremely practical.
Alvaro, great to hear! Go go go with your English!
I have been looking for 'word of the day' for business for a long time!!! Thank you!
I LOVED YOUR PRONUNCIATION AND THE WAY THAT YOU EXPLAIN THE SPELLING
Delighted that I could help you! Due to the spelling, this word is a horror for even my advanced clients! Thanks for commenting. Enjoy learning.

Hey. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Sometimes you have to forget the spelling!
D R owt
Perfect. Yes you've got this word!
@@melaniehussell thank you dear ma'am
How are you ma'am.
@@kamleshkumar.2805 Well, thanks. And happy to help.
The vowel you say “owt/out” and “ drought” is not consistent. You open your mouth more when you say “out”. So it’s a little bit confusing.
Indeed you're right. It's because the vowel sound is at the beginning of the word so you need to open the mouth wider initially, whereas the mouth is already articulating (open) as you move from the 'dr' sounds to the 'out'. This happens with most of our longer words, but I've tried to find the simplest way of explaining it without getting into phonetics which can cause more confusion for many clients.
From your name, perhaps you have many different sounds in your mother tongue than in English, so I'm so impressed with your perception here and willingness to learn. It's wonderful. So inspiring. Thanks for your comments!
Esc
I think Esc means 'Good', so I'm happy for you to keep learning Sunilsuini!
Why not just write "draut" instead of "drought"? That would be much easier.
Alex. Yes! What a great idea! Wish it was all that simple. Wishing you a great week. Melanie
