Garden Tour July
A lot of things changed in July. Bee balm finally bloomed which brings in the pollinators, some corn was ready, I sowed new corn, squash plants didn’t make it so I sowed new seed, sunflowers didn’t grow tall, and I sowed new beans. The raspberries are starting to produce, thyme is ready to harvest and dry, zinnias are beautiful, cantaloupe is almost ready to harvest, figs are growing, and watermelon is growing. I restructured part of the herb garden with new raspberries and a colonial style trellis. It was hot hot and not a lot of rain.

Some Garden Maintenance
Просмотров 68День назад
Chores in the garden are never ending. At this time of year, I’m pruning, weeding, harvesting, and doing little jobs. I can’t stay out too long because of the heat, maybe around 3.5 hours at most early in the morning. I have some shade because of neighbor trees, so that’s helpful, but as soon as the sun breaks through, the heat is extreme and the humidity is high. I do what I can and hope for t...
Drying Jalapeños & Tomatoes
Просмотров 422 дня назад
Last year, I dried jalapeños and made spice, grinding them in my ninja. I gave a jar to my daughter, and we’ve almost used all of our jar. The spice is hot, so we use very little when cooking. Drying is easy. I simply wash, cut, and dry them in the oven on parchment paper at the lowest setting. In the past, I dried them whole and used them in meals for flavor, but I like the spice much better. ...
Working In The Lettuce Bed
Просмотров 7314 дней назад
It was time to harvest from the lettuce bed. I harvested dill leaves, basil, chives, bronze fennel, and celery. I dried all the harvest and look forward to using it in future meals. I removed some zinnias and transplanted some of the lettuce seedlings. It was too hot though, and the seedlings didn’t make it. I didn’t realize it felt over 100 degrees! Yikes! It’s also too hot for the lettuce to ...
Planting More Oregano
Просмотров 9514 дней назад
Some weeks ago, I removed a row of oregano. I saved the oregano and planted some beside zucchini, and now I’m planting the remainder beside the cucumbers. Oregano is supposed to be a good companion. I’ll see how they grow together.
Sowing More Lima Beans
Просмотров 5214 дней назад
While there’s still time left in the season, I decided to sow lima beans along the fence where the peas grew. I’m hoping there’s not too much nitrogen in the soil so I don’t get just leaves, but I’ll see what happens. I also have watermelon growing in this area, so maybe these plants will take up the nitrogen. The lima beans can grow and dry on the fence like the peas. Should be an easy crop.
Planting Rosemary Rootings

Earlier in the year, I took fresh rosemary cuttings and rooted them in a soil mix. It’s an easy process and worked great. Each stem had plenty of roots. I amended the garden soil with sand for good drainage before planting, and the compost topping should keep the plants fed and moist. It’ll be interesting to see how these cuttings continue to grow.
Planting Spearmint
Просмотров 4321 день назад
A while back, I purchased a spearmint plant at a local nursery. I rooted some cuttings and eventually planted them in terracotta pots. After the spearmint grew in the pots, I transplanted them into the garden next to the raspberries. Earlier this month, I removed old mint from that area, and I’ll probably move these plants once the raspberries start expanding. For now, it’s a good place for the...
Oregano & Zucchini

I forgot to wrap my squash vines, and the vine borer got my squash plants. So I removed those plants and started again sowing seed. I had removed a row of oregano earlier, so I’m planting some oregano around the zucchini. It’s supposed to help deter pests. I should have enough season left to get some harvest. I’ll see how it grows.
Sowing Lima Beans

Since the potatoes are harvested, I have time to sow some beans in this area. It will add nitrogen to the soil for the fall crop of potatoes, and of course, it’s more harvest! I chose to sow lima beans because I can let them grow and dry on the vine. Super easy!
Harvesting Potatoes
Просмотров 56Месяц назад
It was time to harvest potatoes. The leaves were dying, and it had been about 13 weeks since I sowed. I didn’t get a huge crop, but it was decent. I’ll amend the soil before I sow again in late August or September. If you remember in a previous post, I sowed two different types of potatoes: a small potato seed that I bought at a local nursery and a bag of large organic potatoes that I bought at...
Rescuing The Onions
Просмотров 68Месяц назад
I planted onions next to the tomatoes, and I think they are not getting enough sun. They’re not really growing much and flopping over. So I decided to move them. I’m hoping they’ll do ok from transplanting. It’s my first time growing regular sized onions. I’ve grown spring onions with no problems. I’ll see how they grow.
Clearing Herbs Sowing Beans

Since I had to clear out my pole beans, I decided to sow some bush beans along the back garden fence. I had to remove the bush beans I sowed a while back because the potatoes were growing out over them. Also, they seemed to require a little support, so the location wasn’t good. In order to sow the beans, I had to remove all the lemon balm since they’re not good companions. I really don’t need r...
Where Are The Beans?
Просмотров 109Месяц назад
I sowed pole beans a while back in the same bed as last year because of the trellis. That wasn’t a good idea because evidently the beans from last year put a lot of nitrogen into the soil. I’ve read that no beans and only leaves could be a sign of too much nitrogen. The vines were so beautiful, but without the flowers there are no beans. So it was time to remove the vines and plant a heavy feed...
Garden Inspiration From Colonial Williamsburg

I recorded these two Colonial Williamsburg fife and drum patriots while it was raining. You’ll hear the rain hitting my umbrella. They were practicing under a tent. In this video are old photos I’ve taken from my various trips to this historic area. From structures to herbs, Colonial Williamsburg offers great ideas for those wanting to add a little history to the garden.
