The Kenya Vlog - Part 2
The Kenya Vlog - Part 2
It's that time again. I went to Kenya, brought some film cameras, and had a good time with some friends. I did shoot some film photos, but this part is more about the experience itself than the images.
Cameras used:
• Yashica 12
• Pentax Espio 160
• Polaroid SX-70 (I got like 2 good pictures before it died on me)
• Sony A7S
• GoPro Hero 4
Music used:
• Various Artists - Background Music (www.epidemicsound.com/)
• Disasterpeace - MUC_C_DP (skeleton guitarist's song from Hyper Light Drifter)

The Kenya Vlog - Part 1

The Kenya Vlog - Part 1 I got to go to Kenya for some reason and this is one of two videos about that. I brought some film cameras with me of course, along with some Fuji Pro 400H, Cinestill 400D, and Kodak Color Plus. This exprience was offered by my college as part of a program called Young Africa Works. With me was my friend Norah and instructor "Ally". Join us as we do crazy stuff in Africa...
April 8 2024 Total Solar Eclipse (Newfoundland)

This year's total solar eclipse as seen from Gander, Newfoundland. Shot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II with a 100-400mm lens mounted on an IOptron SkyTracker Pro. For some reason, the focus bugged out just before totality. Kinda sucks but the footage is still amazing.
Using Film to Make Stop Motion Animations
Просмотров 3284 месяца назад
Using Film to Make Stop Motion Animations I decided to make the most expensive stop-motion I've ever made using film photography. With a half-frame film camera and Cinestill BWXX film, I make Legos look alive. Is it worth the cost of film? Probably not. Cameras used: • Samurai X3.0 • Sony A7S Music used: • Various Artists - Background Music (www.epidemicsound.com/)
The Last Roll of Retrochrome
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.5 месяцев назад
The Last Roll of Retrochrome As you probably already know if you're watching this, Retrochrome is an expired government surplus slide film that was sold by the Film Photography Project. Now that the film is discontinued, I figured I'd make a tribute video for it. I love this film and I wish I had more, but alas this is probably my first and last roll of Retrochrome. I had The Darkroom develop a...

The Most Beautiful Film Camera I've Ever Used (Yashica 12) I got my first medium format camera, the Yashica 12. This camera was the model that was made before the popular Yashica Mat 124G. It takes gorgeous photos and feels amazing to use. What's not to love? I shoot two rolls of film in this video: one roll of Ilford HP5 Plus and one roll of Cinestill 50D. Cameras used: • Yashica 12 • Sony A7S...
Shooting Film in Jordan

Shooting Film in Jordan I traveled to Jordan on the first week of June and of course brought plenty of film to shoot with me: four rolls of Portra 400, one roll of Ektachrome, and a pack of Polaroids. The main purpose besides visiting my friend was to see and photograph Petra. I also went to the Dead Sea and saw the Roman Theater. This is a vlog of my experience, including tons of film photos a...

Small Film Camera, Big Results (Rollei 35 Review) I recently got the opportunity to shoot a Rollei 35 film camera, and I'm here to talk about it. It features a Carl Zeiss lens and a compact form factor that once made it the smallest 35mm film camera in the world. I loaded it with some Ilford HP5, pushed it 2 stops, and hoped for the best. Shooting Color Infrared With film (for less than $100)

Shooting Color Infrared With film (for less than $100) In this video, I try to recreate the color infrared aerochrome look with film for cheap (or at least as cheap as I can with film). I used a Pentax K1000 camera, Ilford SFX 200 film, a GREEN.L 720nm infrared filter, and some color gels to make a trichrome image. Also the brief clip you see at 5:41 is from grainydays's video about aerochrome....

Why Film Is So Much Better Than Digital
Просмотров 10 тыс.2 года назад
Why Film Is So Much Better Than Digital Film photography has made a huge comeback over the past few years, and after trying it for myself I realized why. Film stocks like Kodak's Portra 400, Ektachrome, and even black and white stocks like Ilford's HP5 all have their own feel that you just can't get no matter how many filters you throw on a digital photo. The sky does NOT scatter IR light well, hence it looks dark. Rayleigh scattering cross section is proportional to 1/lambda^4. Lambda is large for infrared, therefore the cross section for scattering is small, and you see it dark.

Really cool video with some amazing results! Colour infrared is so rare on the Internet. Personally, I tried recreating aerochrome looks with Photoshop and I found my infrared camera to be worse for that than using a normal camera. As you can see, the wood-effect on aerochrome film doesn't really show up at all. Aerochrome is affecting mostly the colours. Getting red foliage in infrared is quite counter-intuitive since "white foliage" is way too bright to be converted to red. You will rather get some pink look with an infrared camera or you will have to underexpose the foliage, which makes little sense, either. In the end, I gave up on trying to recreate that look. It makes little sense with an infrared camera. If you turn green into red in post-processing you are already closer to that look, with a normal camera.

Imo, the origins of vr goes back a lot further. All vr relies on the 3d effect that's produced by stereoscopic images, which was discovered mid 1800s. I love collecting and viewing 100-150 year old 3d pictures, the home entertainment system of the wealthy before motion pictures were invented.

Awesome video. Thanks for making these. A quick question. Is the gearing issue likely to happen to us all? (A result of the method?) or were you just unlucky?

    • @maf421
      @maf421 26 дней назад

I think Kodak used a notoriously bad plastic for the gears in a number of their cameras throughout the 70s. The Kodak XL Super 8 cameras also have a problem with a gear stripping out. All of them. Chances may not be good to find a survivor. Maybe one of the hand crank instants may be a better bet.

A lot of older standard and super 8mm cameras have single frame advancement that can be used for stop motion- and those are meant to record up to four minutes at a time, and be projected! It’s on my list of things to do in the future :)

I actually have a super 8 camera that can do that! I decided not to use it for this because super 8 film is stupidly expensive to buy and develop and I only wanted to make something short. If I was trying to make a full on short film, super 8 would definitely be the way to go.

i think what truly makes film special is all in how it looks. it seems more "authentic" and i think the reason why that is is because the way film looks is almost like how we see it in our minds for real. like when we go back to a memory in our heads its fuzzy, grainy, light scorching. etc. all things that film and old digi cams do. i think this is why they are more reactive than the sterileness of digital. because its a more matching look to how we see and feel it inside of our minds remembering things.
