Mixing tip: Developer oxidizes silver to make an image on film. There is a reason that you do not use "silver"ware to mix the chemicals. Use plastic paddles or spoons. Note that d96 monobath is probably the most expensive process to develop B&W film and has a relatively short life of two months once mixed, whether or not used. Finally, why did he get almost no image on his 30 year old film? Panatomic-X has a history of long life after its expiration date, so that may not be it. Also, the numbers and labelling exposed onto the film during its manufacture developed out just fine, so probably not a development problem. By process of elimination, I turn to our maker and say, "Do you know how to determine exposure settings on your camera, my man, 'cause your results strongly suggest not." Doing first tests at night by campfire light probably wasn't a strong move. But you have to start somewhere.
