I too DNFed Queen of the Tearling, twice actually. It felt so slow and borning and I didn't care. I got only about 100 pages in with both DNF instances.
You're the only other person I've seen that has talked about the Gael Song trilogy. I ate that series up so fast! I am stoked to read the next book this author puts out.
I can't wait for her next book!
Oh yes, I have been meaning to read The Wolf Den for ages now as well... why am I so good at procrastinating? 🤣 Hope these all live up to your expectations!!
The Wolf Den is one that I’ve procrastinated because I think I’ll love it Make that make sense😆
@@badgerreads I am right there with you, I don't even want to know the number of potential new faves I am missing out on because I am saving them for that ever elusive 'perfect day' lol
OMG I can’t believe it’s been 4 years since The Lost Queen book 2??!!
Time flies! I think it’s because she travels a lot to do research for the book but couldn’t during Covid
Hello there hey there hey there hey Hello hi hello
I don't keep up with new books but I'm excited for black woods, blue sky and amber owl
Great choices!
Hi Huck. I have just finished reading Tne Wolf Den trilogy and it is SO good. The first book is great, but the series gets better and better . If you can read them all fairly close together, I really recommend it as it really brings the story up another level...in my opinion. I really hope you love it too. My most anticipated book for 2025 is The Amber Owl...which, as you probably know comes out in February..I cannot wait, I'm so excited. ❤
That’s the plan, to binge the Wolf Den trilogy! Glad to know you loved it! I can’t wait for the amber owl!
@badgerreads yes!!! I Have just got back into binging series and I am so glad I have. I'm reading Black Sun at the moment and hoping to binge the series. Enjoy your reading 📚
You know, I am sorry that Daggerspell was such a miss for you... but at least we got this entertaining rant out of it, so silver linings? hahaha hope it was cathartic 😂 Also so nervous to start The Jasmine Throne myself, because we have veryyyy similar preferences and I already wasn't the biggest fan of Suri's writing in her other duology so eeek... Hope you have less duds next year!
At least it was entertaining!😂
I also DNFed Queen of the Tearling awhile back too and remember it being annoyingly bland. Re: Daggerspell, it's always a bad sign when youre rewriting the book in your head 🥴
Truly 😬
That’s a good idea to do this instead of a “worst of” list! Ughhhhhhh Daggerspell 😭 the ongoing popularity of that series continues to baffle me
A true mystery for the ages😂
Hello there hey there
With you on Daggerspell. I read it about 10 years ago and HATED it. I persevered for most of the book thinking that it must get better as it is so beloved, but finally gave up at about 90%. Those are hours of my life i will never get back 😂..such a bad book!!
I’m impressed you made it that far😂
@@badgerreads me too, to be honest 😆. I'm better at dnfing these days so would definitely have given up sooner!
Daggerspell.... Wow that is a blast from the past😅. I have read it 20 years ago, finished it, and never read any other book by the author. Now i remember why😂
😂
Love that this was such a year of surprises for you! My favourite book of the year (Asunder by Kerstin Hall) was also a big surprise for me. My co-blogger DNFed the ARC and asked if someone else wanted to take it up for review, so I just took a gamble and now it's one of my new all-time faves lol. And I discovered my inner romance girlie last year, which made for some of the most joyful reading experiences I have ever had 🤩 I think my favourite stat is that I re-read 29 books, and almost all of them were 4.5 or 5 stars (even ones that were second chance re-reads!). Oh and I read 130 new to me authors, which is also so fun!
Love that the gamble worked out for you! Rereads are the best!
For Guy Gavriel Kay, i agree Tigana is a slog, but his recent stuff is much easier. My intro to him was A Brightness Long Ago, which i loved.
I probably should have DNF'ed A Botanical Daughter but for some reason finished it. Contained the weirdest sex scene I have ever read in my life.
😳
Oh no! I have that Jo Walton book on my tbr shelf! I love a good Arthurian legend retelling too and find that they are either wildly good or horrible.
Yeah there isn’t a lot of in between for Arthurian retellings Maybe it will work better for you than it did for me
I hope it works for me. And I loved A River Enchanted but then it kinda felt like a coherent version of Riddle Master of Hed?! 🤣 And I remembered you had a video trying to read Patricia McKillip and it wasn’t your cup of tea.
Now that you mention it I can see the comparison
I got a puppy last Feb and yeah reading has been so hard! He actually chews on my laptop while I'm trying to read ebooks
That must make reading tough! When Merlin gets zoomies, if there are books on the floor, he will grab one to run around with
Always look forward to your end of year favorites video! I think I’ll definitely have to try the Gael song trilogy now. One of my 2024 favorites was The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley. It definitely took me by surprise by how much I enjoyed it.
Love a good surprise favorite!
Getting a dog really affected my reading as well!
They do take up a lot of time and energy, but they’re worth it😊
One of my favorite reads from this year was Piranesi, which had been on my tbr for ages but for whatever reason I never picked it up even though I had a feeling I was going to like it. But I often don’t trust myself on guesses like that because I’ve gone into too many books expecting to like it and then hating it haha. But I loved Piranesi! It was exactly what I wanted.
That’s awesome you guessed right! Glad you enjoyed it!
Hello there hey there
I loved Morgan is my Name and its sequel -- never heard anyone else talk about them!
I need to read the sequel!
Love the diversity in story types on this list!! I also loved Icarus, she truly never disappoints. And I can't wait to check out your other faves because I just know I am going to love them. My favourite SFF book of 2024 was Asunder by Kerstin Hall. And non-SFF probably Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez or A Love Song for Ricki Wilde by Tia Williams! 🤩
Hello there hey there
Always love when a favorites list is a surprise to the reader! It means that branching out paid off, which is always a delight. I’m near done with the first of Gaelsong and it was your review that inspired me to finally pick it up, which I have to thank you for, and after this video I think I need to bite the bullet on K Ancrum as well. I hope 2025’s reading is off to a good start for you!
I’m so glad you’re liking Gael Song!☺️
Such a great list. I'm really looking forward to reading The Morgan Le Fay series and finishing up the Gaelsong series. I found it really hard to pick a favourite book last year...I think it was possibly Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson...partly because it was just what I felt like reading at the time during mid November, cold days , dark night. Such an epic, chunky read. But I also loved Thornhedge by T Kingfisher. Which is on the opposite end of the scale. Really short but sweet.
Sounds like you had a real range of books you enjoyed last year!
I feel like I need to check out K. Ancrum now
She’s so good!
Enjoyed your list❤
I didn't liked the rape scene because not for the graphic portion but because I found that came of nowhere really 😅
Pillars of the Earth is a masterpiece I think you'll enjoy because the book has a very complex cast of characters with a great story and personality give it a try 😅
That’s what I keep hearing😄 it might have to move up my list!
I just love the Sevenwater series more than anythingggg. I also loved blackthorn and Grimm 1 & 2. For some reason I couldn’t finish 3! You should make a video if you love Sevenwater series you should also try….
Your description of Spellshop reminded me how much I would enjoy reading a cozy mystery soon! ❤
I got to hear Shauna Lawless talk about this series at worldcon last year and it got me so hyped to read these books. So ready to read them all and join you on the hype train for “Gen 2” of Gael song!!
That’s so cool! I hope you love them!
Is Shauna lawless(children of gods and fighting men series) books are not available in hardcovers in UK.... Plz let me know i didn't get it.... If it available plz let me know
I’m not in the UK so I don’t know. Maybe check Blackwells? That’s where I go for UK editions. Hope you find what you’re looking for!
Great haul!! The Manda Scott sounds really intreaguing. I loved her Boudica books ( though I still need to finish the series)
Thanks for watching!
Hi there there
Sounds like we had the exact same experiences with Starling House and The Spellshop. And I also re-read the entire Between Earth and Sky series to finish it out, and while the finale was a bit messy, I still enjoyed it quite a bit. Also, consider me completely sold on Don't Let the Forest In, that was one of my most anticipated releases and it just fell off the priority list. Loved hearing all of your thoughts! 🤩
I hope you like Don't Let the Forest in!
I have actually been putting off reading the last book because I feel nervous about how it will end 😅 Dreams of sorrow was my favourite if the novellas too.
I totally understand😆
I love that Merlin contributed to your reading goals ☺️ what a good boi
He is!
Thank you, removed starling house (too much iffy feedback) and queued Morgan is my name. (Children of Gods was already in top of my queue). I need to explore historical fantasy
Happy to help😁
Hello there
Hello there hey there hey Hello hey
I really want to read Morgan is my Name. It sound so good. But I think im going to wait until the trilogy is complete as i have realised that if i dont read books close together, I loose enthusiasm for the rest of the series. I also really want to read Boneships. My last few months was taken up a lot with The Stormlight Archive, which I started at the end of October. I have only read the first two...but those books are HUGE! I also read some T Kingfisher, which I loved and I want to read a lot more by her.
Yes! I also need to read books closer together. I’ve been trying to binge more series to do that. Now that I’ve read the first Morgan Le Fay book now I’m conflicted how soon to read the second while I’m waiting for the third! I hope you like it when you get to it!
@badgerreads yes, binging series is one of my goals for 2025 😊 I think the third one comes out later in the year?? Luckily I have the fist one in hardback so I don't have to wait for the paperbacks for this series.
This is so good to hear!! I read the Children of Gods and Fighting Men last year and felt very similarly to you about it and have been wanting to carry on but feeling a bit nervous as I didnt love the first book. Now , however I wont worry. I will wait until the third book comes out in paperback ( May) and then I will binge the rest of the series. Sadly, I think the novellas are only available digitally and I only read physically 😔 So will gave to give them a miss.
I hope you like the rest of the series as much as I did! I wish there was a physical version of the novellas, I hate reading ebooks. On goodreads there is a book listed called Tales of Fire and Freedom: Gael Song Stories, which I’m hoping will be a physical bind up of the novellas but there’s no other info about it at the moment
@badgerreads oh that would be really good. Fingers crossed that it is 🤞
Huck! there's a third novella coming out before the second generation of the series begins! I think the novella is going to be a sort of "bridge" between the two eras of the series. But I won't know more until the novella comes out. I want to read everything Shauna Lawless writes! I hope you are well, happy new year to you and your pup!
I just saw that 😆 theres very little info about it but I’m excited! There is also something on goodreads called Tales of Fire and Freedom: Gael Song Stories which I’m hoping will be a bind up of the novellas so there will be a physical copy. But it says it’s set for 2027… Happy new year!
❤📚📚❤️
❤📚📚❤️ Sold! 😂
Yay!
Such a fun vlog project! Sounds like we had very similar experiences with both Annihilation and Murderbot. I think some of my favourite sci-fi books I have read recently are Yume Kitasei's works! Also, your bangs look cute to me! 🥰
I've been interested in Yume Kitasei's books!
I'd love to find more fantasy books with forest settings. I've read the queens of renthia, but I'm sure there are others I don't know about.
Oh forest settings I can do! I have been meaning to do nature fantasy recs for a while so maybe this will be the year😆
