Inspiring mixed media art videos to encourage you in your creative journey.
Mixed Media Art - Sharing a Fail
In this video, I am sharing the process of struggling to paint a portrait in my art journal. I had hoped to keep it more abstract but by the end, I had overworked it and felt like I had failed with my original idea. Despite this, I found some takeaways and believe there is always something to learn in the creative process regardless of the result. I hope this encourages you to keep practicing even when the outcome you desire feels difficult to achieve.

In this video, I am experimenting with vertical collage stripes or maybe strips is a better word for it? Either way, the point of this exercise was to obtain a better sense of preference for pattern and color. Not every time you create art will you make a masterpiece sometimes it is about discovery. your color palette is wonderfully subtle and complex as is the background texture
Thanks so much Wendy! I love your descriptive words--helps me so my art in a new light.
So if you compare single pigment colors they should be very similar, but any time you are comparing colors that are multiple pigments the ratio of each pigment in the blend will vary from company to company creating a greater disparity between brands. Sometimes, like with Payne’s Grey, even the pigments used will vary brand to brand and not just the ratio of each pigment. And personally I’m Golden all the way!
Thanks Anna! It sounds like you are much more knowledgeable than I am. I appreciate you watching and sharing.
Love the marks you’re getting! I’ve always known this as Carbon Paper 📄!
Thanks Sallie! Yes, it's also called carbon paper.
I used to be a secretary and it was called carbon paper, used for typing to make copies. ❤
Yes, it is also called carbon paper. I, too remember those days when it was used to make copies.
Thank you, Pam! I use it to trace pics I'm uncomfortable drawing and then paint them! Love the mark making idea! Never thought about that! Thanks!❤
I have also used it to trace Gwynned. It is a great way to start and saves time drawing.
This is fantastic.
Thanks so much!
Took the day off for my bday to have an adventure day and some kinked my back last night😢. So here I am quite happily actually watching yt art videos. I love this one, what fun to see all your work. It’s inspiring. Thanks for sharing
Sorry to hear about your back Tracy--hope you are feeling better. Thanks so much for watching!
This is a fantastic idea, thank you💕💕
Thanks Cheryl! I hope you give it a try.
Well, I never knew about white tracing paper, what kind of rock have I been living under 😆 I love this!
@@mariach46 look for transfer paper…not tracing paper. I love this idea too.
@sherrycooksley5196 thank you for this! I couldn't find it online, now I know, thanks so much 😊
You are too funny Maria! I hope you find some and give it a try.
Down under, and possibly in the UK it's called carbon paper. It's been around since the days of typewriters, in fact, I believe that's what it was created for initially. It comes in blue, green and red. Edit: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_paper Was first created in 1801 it seems.
Thanks for that info! It's also called carbon paper here in the US too. I didn't realize it came in so many other colors though.
That is a great idea 😍 Thank you so much for sharing 👏🥰 lots of love from arctic Norway 🥰🌸🌼🌺
Thanks Lena! I hope you give it a try.
Genius idea, i love what you’re doing with this!
Thanks Kate! It's fun to experiment with different things to make marks.
I have found slowing breathing helps slow speech rate which in turn reduces vocal clicks as well as potential to trip over words and meanings. Just a thought.
Agreed, going way too fast and tripping over words and using too many uhms and aaahs which was distracting. Perhaps having a script to follow might help.
Perhaps,a private email might be a nice ideal. next time.
Hi Jane, I appreciate that tip and the feedback for better articulation when I'm making YT videos. To be honest, I make these videos in my spare time and with little to no financial incentive so after setting up the camera, lighting, & audio I just have to go for it as afterwards I still have to upload, edit, write text, & create the thumbnail. I keep thinking I'll get better over time. I also realize that my videos aren't for everyone as I'm definitely not polished or professional.
@@LoJo99 Thanks for your support!
@@creativebeanart I'm sorry you found my verbal articulation to be distracting--that is obviously not my intent. To be honest, I make these videos in my spare time and with little to no financial incentive so after setting up the camera, lighting, & audio I just have to go for it as afterwards I still have to upload, edit, write text, & create the thumbnail. I probably would not make any video if I had to write out a script ahead of time. I realize that my videos aren't for everyone as I'm definitely not polished or professional.
Love this Pam!! Love the whole process of it with the bit of mystery behind it!! And I like how the marks and drawings come out with a distressed look!! Thank You!! ~❤~ 😊
I agree that it has a distressed look and a bit of uncertainty or mystery like you said. I hope you give it a try.
Great! How did you put the womens picture onto the transfer paper ?thankyou Pam
If I remember correctly I put the photo on top of the transfer paper and traced it that way. That should work for most anything you want to trace.
I’m trying this as soon as I find the paper!
Be sure and let me know what you think Susan. Thanks for watching.
Love this idea!
Thanks Sherry! I hope you give it a try.
Inspiring. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Gloria! I appreciate you watching!
Pam, you say out loud what we all need to hear. Do something, just start and get the creativity flowing. And about precious, you are so on point. I don't think I'm alone in having an ever growing stash of "precious" and if I don't start using it, it will remain in storage. This weekend I am pulling out some of that materials and I am using it. What the heck am I (we all) waiting for. Thanks, once again I am motivated by your videos.
Janice, thanks for letting me know what I said resonated with you. All the things I share are generally a reflection of my own struggles, "Why, oh why is that paint so precious? Why am I saving it until I'm a better artist? Or until I have a grand plan? Or can make good art?" I have to push against those voices and use all my art supplies. Like you said, "what the heck are we waiting for?". You have encouraged me greatly today--knowing that this video was an inspiration is exactly why I make them. Thanks so much for watching and sharing.
Having been a child of the neon 80's (insert a cringe face) it was a delightful surprise to find this tutorial. I struggle with finding the right balance in colors that appeal to my senses. This was tremendously helpful!
Oh, I'm so glad you found this helpful! Thanks for watching and letting me know.
whatever you are creating: just love your style 💜thanks again for sharing 😊
Oh, I appreciate that so much Kirsten! Thanks for watching and letting me know.
Your Paynes grey is very nice. I am a Paynes grey addict as well as watercolor or acrylic. Nice result. Merci Pam 😊
Sounds like I'm in good company then--payne's grey is beautiful and I've found it to be slightly different in each brand. Thanks for letting me know.
I love it !! 💗💗💗
Thanks for your kind words Tina! Thanks for watching.
Thank you Pam for this idea! I am so thankful for your videos. Over a year ago I came across your video on making art journals out of old books. That was the day my life changed. You gave me the courage to start my art journey at 42. Since that day I have learned to step out of my fear and shame of thinking that I can do art and I've been creating things that I didn't even know existed in me. I'm so thankful for you Pam. I've learned so much from you!
You totally made my day Magdalena--thank you so much for sharing your story. When I make my videos the goal I keep in mind is that I want to encourage others in their art journey and in the process it naturally helps me as well. Knowing that you are now living a more creative life due to watching my videos is such an encouragement to me. Thank you again! PS...I started my art journey at age 50! It's never too late!
Yes 😃I watched the video where you shared that and it's what gave me more courage to start, I thought to myself if Pam is doing it and it wasn't too late for her then why the heck am I holding myself back and so I grabbed an old book and began my first art journal 😀 you ignited my fire❤
@@magdalenaciorochmelgar4825 I love this so much! Thanks Magdalena!
Thats a great fun and simple warm up exercise, I love all the texture and layers it's created, I will go try this , great excuse to get my paints out!! Thank you Pam!
I'm glad to hear you are going to give it a try Maria! Thanks for letting me know.
Great idea, thank you.
I appreciate that--I hope you give it a try.
Thank you for this idea!! I have lots of “backgrounds” for something like this!! ❤
I'm with you--I have lots of backgrounds as well Dee. Let me know if you give it a try.
@ I did, but I used a gelli print, and did the color blocking with watercolor, because I was too lazy to get out my acrylics and my watercolors were handy at the time!!! 😁 It wasn’t as good as yours, but I liked it and it was relaxing like you said!!
@ ❤️
@@deenichols2055 Hey, I think that's great! It's all about using what's on hand and getting in motion--not necessarily about the final result. Thanks for letting me know.
Cool! I have lots of those kind of pages. Thanks from sunny Australia
Sounds like many of us have those backgrounds just waiting for some type of creative endeavor. Let me know if you give it a try Angelina.
Very cool~!! Love this loose and distressed look!! 👍Thanks Pam!! What a perfect way to warm up!! ~❤~ 😊
I agree it is a good way to warm up. It is also something out of the ordinary from what I usually do, which I think is always a great idea. Thanks for watching.
This exercise seems like a good idea 😊 and inspiring 😊 i really need to losend up🤪 thank you Pam for sharing 🙏 lots of love from Arctic Norway 🥰🍀🌼🌸

Thanks for your kind words!! I appreciate you watching.
What a great way to not waste the paint & to have some collage papers
Would LOVE to see a video of your making of the collage papers….. along with the color mixing too.
Thanks for letting me know--I appreciate getting ideas for new videos.
@@pamhemmerling I would be very interested as well! I prefer making my own things instead of preprinted patterns.
@@oneheart19 Thanks for letting me know--that is very helpful as I plan future videos.
Your Collage papers are gorgeous
Thanks so much!
This is fantastic!
Thanks so much!
Shes cute. I gotta practice portraits more often. I want to end up doing abstracts with semi realism faces. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Diane! I love your idea of abstracts combined with semi-realism the contrast will make your art so interesting.
Wow! Pretty good. I did hear someone say that once you work with oils, you never will use anything else. I think thats also why i dont want to use them. Because now ive invested soooo much in acrylics.
You are right. Ive invested in a bunch of oils also, and i havent touched them yet. Keep waiting till i get better. I started out with watercolors and invested so much $ in them. Now ive switched over to acrylics. I hope my watercolors dont go bad. They are Daniel Smiths, Sennelier, and M Grahams. The good stuff.
I am right there with you Diane and totally understand about saving the good stuff for later. I am really trying to push against that tendency but some days are better than others. I do think experimentation is good so trying all the different types of art materials can be a helpful and an important part of the process. You can always come back to your watercolors or incorporate them into your art. I think Laura Horn uses watercolors with other mediums beautifully--you should check out her YT channel if you haven't already. Let me know if you try your oil paints--I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Nice. I like this.
Thanks Diane, I hope you give it a try.
Thanks for that tip.
Glad you found it helpful Diane! Thanks for watching.
amazing ! nice,nice !, thank you 🎨👏🏻
Thanks Mona! I appreciate you watching.
oh this is a great exercise for making decisions on placements and what you like and not like, I love how its turned out, very interesting Pam!
I appreciate that Maria! I do think it's important to figure out what you like and don't like even if it is different from everyone else.
Fun play time. I shall have a go
I hope you do give it a try! Thanks for watching!
Very interesting exercice. Pam, when I started mixed media, I wasn't able to tear at all. I had to use scissors and only scissors... Then I started to use a ruler and then my hands. Now, when I use scissors I can tell that I am tired and that make me laugh and that I need to be good to myself and rest... Merci 😊
Oh, I love hearing about your process LouLou! Thanks for sharing.

You are so kind!! Thanks for watching.
Your pink "canoes"...I saw birds in those shapes. Very cool💜
Oh Joanne, I love that! Our eyes all see something different. Thanks for watching and letting me know.
Good morning Pam. Your creativity process is so very exciting to watch! I wish I could have a fourth of your creative energy, love it! I have a question, would you seal the flower balls since it’s pastel(once it dries?) I know we can seal it or not. I am just wondering if you do?
You are so kind Lisa, thanks! In general, when I am working in an art journal I don't worry as much about sealing the soft pastels as I would if I was working on a canvas. That being said, if I don't want it to smear or come off I would seal it. So sometimes I seal it and sometimes I don't. Hope that helps.
I love that you are so bold and have the courage to push yourself 👏👏🥰 I’m trying to find my own style so I made a journal and called it ’Find me’ 😂 well then 😊 lots of love from arctic Norway 🥰🌼🌸🌺
Thank you Lena! Seriously, though I don't feel bold or courageous so I appreciate hearing that my process appears that way. I love the idea of a journal titled "Find Me". You will find your own style--just keep going and it will appear. It's all about figuring out what you like and don't like which is going to be different for everyone.
