The New Oil is a project dedicated to teaching beginners and non-tech-savvy people about digital privacy and cybersecurity.
Is THIS the Future of Mobile Apps?
Progressive Web Apps (or PWAs) offer better privacy, use less space, and work cross-platform. But how usable are they really?

16:05 signal app has option for bio/pin lock. an attacker with your unlocked phone cannot necessarily get into signal
It's already been proven that the government has already gotten around encryption by scanning your phone or tablet before encryption happens.
How. About. Google. Messagerr.
Very cool service!
I really appreciate this video. My only issue now is. I want to have my own domain name. For my own @ I just can’t find one that is professional enough that wouldn’t be related to my real name. Could you please give suggestions one what could be done?
I can't keep up with just 2 numbers, home and my cell phone. Work email and my two Gmails.
I use Sync. The interface and syncing can use improvement, but it's private, generous with space, stable, and the customer service is good.
Nathen i sub to servalence report i sis not know you had a chanell koool.
This comment feels nitpicky considering how great this interview is but I'm going to nitpick. I appreciate the honesty regarding possible future threats to privacy if the owners change. I like that. He says there would be plenty of notice ahead of time for people to bail from the Service. However. If the service is being sold, providing this notification could significantly reduce the sale price. How and when they notified their users will probably be specified in the sales documents. They could be incentivized to not give users a ton of advance notice ahead of a sale. Ultimately, you don't know what is going to happen in the future and you do your best to make decisions now. This is a common truth for every software and many non-software-based companies. There's nothing new here... But it seems disingenuous to not at least mention the financial incentives in the future could work.
Getting involved with user support as a product manager or any kind of leader is the best advice ever. Totally sold on this guy from that one line
Lol booted
Make a video on how to use email clients, such as Thunderbird and OutLook to send encrypted emails.
I covered this a little bit in my PGP video, that may be similar to what you're looking for.
Now the scammers and robocallers are using this too. I get several calls a week from unknown numbers that cannot be looked up anywhere online because they are VOIP.

on the point about using a fingerprint + password on a phone - most phones require you to type in your password after rebooting so you can strategically turn off your phone if you feel you need that extra protection
Unfortunately Signal is no longer the Messinger it was at the very beginning under Moxey. Signal is broken! I uninstalled it last week. On a phone call I could hear my voice in the earpiece. I rely on messengers based in Switzerland.
I had a hot little fling over Skype about 12 years ago...considering your product as I write this. 😆😆😆

Is there any distros that are compatible with mac m1 chip? Thank you for all of your amazing videos. Love your personality.
I believe Asahi Linux is the flagship distro on that front. I would start your search there. I haven't used it myself so I can't speak how to how stable or polished it is, but they do seem to be putting in a lot of effort based on the headlines I've seen.
Thank you.
You can also get yourself ferdium and just activate integrations for messangers you use asuming they're on the list, login into those and you'll have them all active in one place. Ferdium is crossplatform, they're open source and they're forked from ferdinand which is same thing as ferdium but ferdinand was paid.
No Skype phone numbers for Canada.🫥
Are aliases worth it if your email provider has very strong spam filtering and good blocking features? E: never mind, just got to the security part in the video.
I don't fully trust that my aliases will not dissapear for no reason. For example - SL or AA can remove your account with no warnig at all - that's what they say in their services policy. It is always easier to log in or recover an account in any web site if you remember your login email. Any email aliases service complicates your life for questionable benefits. Things that are easy to find out: 1. Your alias provider if you use their domain (SL, AA, etc.) 2. Your name and provider of your custom domain (if you use one). I'm not sure if it is possible to check the provider of your email if you use custom domain with Tuta or Proton. You can't escape profilig completely. And for avoiding spam - spam filter and rules should be enough, especially if you use Gmail. The only serious reason to use these services is to keep your main email address in secret and never give it to anybody, so if someone wanted to hack your email account - it would be more hard to. But if you use SL, it's gonna be quite likely that you use Proton. But if you use Proton with Proton aliases - it doesn't make sense at all, as all aliases can be used to log in to your account. My advice - have a bunch of free emails, secure them by 2FA (I prefer combination of one ybikey and Aegis app) and use them for different purposes. That's the best way to keep things in the right order and make your life less complicated.
Plz consider doing a review on the Quetta browser sometime.
You said there is a "New" option on top on GPG for Mac. I couldn't find any option to create a message and encrypt it. How do I encrypt and decrypt a plain text message without creating a file?
Unfortunately I'm currently without a Mac and this video is almost two years old. I'm not sure what may have changed in the graphical interface since this was made, and I don't have a Mac at the moment to go test it myself. I recommend checking the software's website for any tutorials or maybe some forums where you can go ask other users. I wish I could be more helpful. :(
These systems are specifically built for Linux, not Windows, so I fail to see the issue. I own a couple of System76 systems and have run multiple distros of Linux without issue. Seems, given the lack of computer knowledge I’m hearing, the problem is user error. My relatively new HP runs Windows pretty well, but has some issues with Linux, which is fine because the HP is not built for Linux. That’s just the nature of the technology atm; get the proper hardware for the target OS.
If you are crashing Windows, you are doing a lot wrong. Are you screwing around with Linux?
I think that the "Computers" folder on the web app is for custom folders synced via the "Backup" feature, stored separately from files you directly save to Proton Drive's own "My Files" directory it created on the PC. And I think this is a good way to handle things. It's less confusing & less messy than just dumping all the backed up "Downloads" and "Documents" folders from various PCs into the main folder. So files will still be synced, but best way to do it is to create a folder structure within Proton's own "My Files" folder instead of just saving to the folders backed up using Proton Drive's "Back up" feature mainly intended for backups.
Oh. You're talking about phones again. A PC user should be less likely to rely on cloud storage of their information I expect.
i find a good option is to have a browser for PWA's and another browser for daily use so you don't get contaminated history
A small sidenote about PWAs on Android, most browsers don't "properly" support installing PWAs via WebAPK (only supported browsers currently are Chrome (if you have play services) and Samsung browser (on Samsung phones)). Other browsers might realize that its a PWA and say install but they just create a shortcut with some caching (shortcuts have a small icon of the browser next to it + don't show up in the app drawer or the settings > PWAs installed via WebAPK do), so that might be a reason why you didn't have the greatest experience with them on Android
Thanks for the additional info!
@@TheNewOil Hello,👋🏼 I was wondering if anyone can help with a concern and worry I’m dealing with? My worry is mobile phones and mobile apps won’t be around or available for my lifetime I’m 31 years old? I’m just concerned that’s all. Just need some reassurance that they’ll be available or around for my generation or lifetime at least. 👍🏼 Appreciate the input and help!! 🙏🏼
I believe I have Purple Air loaded as an app (Android), which us great since it doesn't have a dedicated app and super useful during fire season.
You're better off installing dedicated browsers for PWAs. For example, regular Brave is my default "browsing" browser with regular Vivaldi as my backup. Another factor is whether or not you want your stuff compartmentalized. For example, I have one PWA running in regular Firefox, another PWA running in Firefox Beta, another running in Firefox Nightly, another running in Fennec...you see where this is going (the Gecko-based browsers support uBlock Origin). To further play around with this, I'd recommend downloading the browsers from FFUpdater.
🤨🙄
I am grateful that I was able to purchase a license to PGP 9.8.1 years ago. 😊
Thank you for the video, very helpful. At the end you said not to use PGP with existing providers such as GMail & Yahoo Mail. Which secure email provider do you recommend we use? Countermail seems like the ONLY truly private, secure provider on the market today; however, it's only open to newcomers via an invite code from an existing user. What alternative email providers do you recommend, please? Thanks! 👍🏻
My recommended providers are listed here: thenewoil.org/en/guides/moderately-important/email/
The answer is Olvid.
5:03 if I were to sign up with an email alias & for some reason i delete the alias, does my Bitwarden account stay with the main email the email alias forwards to or does it delete & i have to make a whole new Bitwarden account? 🤔 Edit: Also, would applying a bitwarden extension to my browser be of the same risk as using browser autofill?
You would continue to be able to log in with your existing alias email address, however you would not receive any email notifications from Bitwarden (such as reminders to renew your subscription, for example). You can also change your email in the settings, so if you decide to change or delete your alias email, I would recommend going into Bitwarden and updating the account email to ensure you never miss any important news. They're extremely good about not spamming, I almost never get any emails from them. It depends on the risk you're talking about. If you mean the risk of password-stealing malware, to be honest I'm not 100% sure. The safest thing is to set your vault to lock after a certain amount of inactive time - 15 minutes, for example. That would definitely help a lot. I would have to do more research to know if the extension has any additional safety by default aside from that.
@@TheNewOil Ok, thanks for answering!
5 minutes of content with 20 minutes of repetitive useless talking
@1:07 the video started out with a lot of crackling and stayed this way for quite a while (@4:13, @7:28 crackling still there). After @13:00 there's no more crackling. Did you notice this? Not sure I side with you regarding the return and how it was handled, no offense, but I enjoyed the vid none the less.
I didn't notice it in the initial recording, and I had already rerecorded the video several times for other reasons. My setup these days is considerably more stable and better quality, sorry for the problems back then.
@@TheNewOil hey, thanks for the reply. Didn't realize the video was a year old, heh. I came for the System76 review and subbed for the other great content you have. Just thought you'd be interested in knowing about the weird audio issue, but you've already sorted that out.
I appreciate the heads-up. Sadly these things happen, even to the most seasoned pros. All I can do is keep moving forward. Glad you like the other content and thanks for sticking around!
13:05 yes one can reply
BUT HOW DO YOU MAKE THE ALIAS ?????????? All this surrounding why and wherefore and NO practical info to make it work!!!
Dude you suck 😂😂. Don’t plug your money ask first thing, and that being said you didn’t even come close to earning any donations this was incomplete and terrible, objectively.
I can’t remember the last time a spam call got through my call filter, and I’m not even very strict with my privacy.
Consider yourself lucky. Most people get tons of robo calls and spam messages. It really depends on lots of factors though.
New Oil, why dont you post more? We want more content!!
Because I have a day job that takes up much of my free time. I'm trying to post more this year. Thanks for your support.
@@TheNewOil Ah, okay. I like the content you put out. It helps a beginner like me understand in simpler term
