Who's A Good Candidate for EMDR and Brainspotting?
I get this statement often, "I've been considering EMDR/Brainspotting but I just don't know if I am a good fit." The conversation then continues to this person feeling as though they don't have enough "trauma criteria" to seek a type of therapy like this.
I love this conversation because it allows me to help open up ideas about redefining what trauma is, looking at the universal human condition and that EMDR and brain spotting can benefit just about anyone. While also can help with what we consider bigger traumas, it also fits most peoples lifestyles if you've ever experienced sadness, grief, and loss, nervousness, disruptions in relationships of any kind, performance, anxiety, sleep issue...

You've Heard of EMDR, But What Are EMDr and EMD?

If you have seen any of my videos on EMDR, you may be familiar with what it entails. But have you heard of EMDr and EMD? These are sidesteps to the original EMDR protocol that are better suited for more recent traumas (less then 3 months ago), and for individuals who need more support staying within their window of tolerance. EMDr and EMD are wonderful accompaniments to EMDR and can feel like a...

    • @thewellnesscheck

      I am sorry you're dealing with this! Either one is bound to be helpful. EMDR has more of a framework around it, while BSP is more open-ended. Both can get the job done, just in different ways. If you desire to start feeling better, I say start iwth what you have access to! No sense in waiting if you can get some BSP done sooner rather than later. I hope this helps.

    I haven't seen any further DNMS videos but I have seen, loosely paraphrased, "EMDR and Brainspotting are for everybody" videos. Is DNMS not as important than it seems from watching this video? I'm kinda hoping so because my memory for acronyms is pretty full at the moment 😄

    • @thewellnesscheck
      @thewellnesscheck 10 дней назад

      Gosh, great question. And yes there are way too many acronyms! EMDR and Brainspotting (BSP) can be beneficial for many types of people with varying life stressors- not just trauma. DNMS however, is more tailored to attachment wounds and childhood unmet needs. DNMS is even more helpful for these types of issues than EMDR and BSP are. Sometimes EMDR can fall short in reprocessing childhood unmet needs and attachment wounds, so starting with DNMS techniques is the better way to go. Often times after attachment healing, EMDR and BSP are more helpful. I think the bottom line is that there is more than one way to go about it. I am grateful we have options and can tailor treatment to such an individual level. I hope this helps!

    I love this channel (even if searching for "wellness check" can be a bit confronting). I've found EMDR quite liberating; when I've been aware of a traumatic memory or body feeling to be processed, at least. I've been investigating Brainspotting because I would like to address the trauma of which I have no memory (and/or significant covert resistance). Internal Family Systems might be helpful too, except I need to do it DIY or self-therapy which quickly bumps into "oh yeah, I meant to do that today" resistance. What's the best therapeutic mode to do on one's own, I wonder?

    • @thewellnesscheck
      @thewellnesscheck 10 дней назад

      Gosh, great question. My honest answer is that it can be daunting to do it on your own. One of the greatest surprise elements of healing are the "aha" moments that come from an outside perspective - one who can see things in a different light and can bring insight from that angle. I know when I try and do it myself, I sometimes fall short due to only having my own experience of it.

    This was a very good demonstration. My therapist meets with me over Zoom and moves the pointer along both the x and y axis. I know when I hit a spot and tell him to stop at that point. He can also tell when I hit a spot just by watching my reactions. I saw in one video that Cannabis is the most effective adjunct to somatic therapy, so I got mildly high last time (Maui Wowee strain) and it worked very well for me!

    I appreciate why we should be doing Brainspotting safely and responsibly, and the benefit of working with a therapist is significantly more beneficial than trying it all ourselves. I can't forget that access to therapy is privileged by societal and personal hurdles, so I love it when powerful, advanced techniques are shared for self-help. I dream of a time when more brain-based techniques are so well understood and ubiquitous that they're integrated into school health class curriculums. I wonder if using Self-Brainspotting to reinforce positive experiences is a technique that could be taught to kids and young adults to improve their self-esteem?

I use Rolling BSP when a client is either having difficulty focusing on a target, or if there are a lot of complexities within the target. Rolling BSP is an excellent way to process a multitude of things simultaneously. I remember in my own training and practice, I loved Rolling BSP the best. It has such impactful outcomes! I HAVE heard that brainspotting is one of those things were you don’t really understand it or how it works until you do it , but I am just so confused and baffled by it. My understanding of it overall is that basically there is a spot/ area in your vision where you feel more sensitive and uncomfortable to negative feelings like stress , anxiety , depression, anger, guilt , etc. there’s a spot in your eyesight where you feel them the strongest AND the reason that they are the strongest in that spot/ area specifically, is because it’s the spot/ area where your eyes tend to go when thinking about or processing those emotions in real time (for example: say I have been waiting to hear back from my dream school that I’ve wanted to go to my whole life and it was the only college I applied to & I didn’t get in, or I get into a super heated fight with my brother , etc, when feeling those emotions of devastation and rage, my eyes go to that spot) and that could be completely wrong lol but that’s my understanding of it , so, like what? That’s so weird . Couldn’t it be possible that everyone’s different and maybe that’s not what happens? Lol you would think that the people who are around us everyday and are close to us and vice versa would notice our eyes having that pattern everytime we get upset though , I would think k? Or maybe it’s just a very discreet thing but also, if that is true , that’s kind of scary/ depressing to think that it’s that easy and sensitive and not really something we have much control over plus here we all are walking around everyday not knowing that about ourselves. lol so if I keep my eyes shut for the rest of my life , is it possible I won’t be so sensitive to my emotions ? LOL . My biggest question of all though, is how is sitting in silence for an hour across from a person who is quite literally controlling emotions and doing nothing but feeling them , a way of processing trauma and making you emotionally stronger ? How ????? I understand we do have to face those emotions and process them to heal from them. But we do that in therapy by talking it out. Talking lets you vent. You are releasing all of that out. In brain spotting , what the explanation of why that would work??? There isn’t one. And omggg I will be the first person to tell you that if I go a couple of weeks without therapy , or I’m going through something difficult and my therapist isn’t there to help me and I DO have to sit there with my emotions by myself , I’ll tell you right now that I have found myself talking to myself just to be able to get it out and away from me bc keeping it bottled up only makes it entirely worse . If facing those feelings by yourself while you force yourself hard feelings as strong as possible actually worked , then therapy would have never needed to exist . And soooo many people who have PTSD or who have experienced trauma , probably everybody, wouldn’t be so terrified of those experiences or revisiting that trauma if it was only healing it. Why isn’t there blindspot for the possible, happy, euphoric emotions we feel ? Or is it the same spot ? I just don’t understand lol

    This is super interesting, thanks. I've been working with a brain spotting therapist for the last 18 months, its expensive and i have no idea how it's working but i have had multiple ptsd triggers resolve and have had a full year without time off work in burnout or suicidal ideation now. I did traditional therapy for about 10 years on and off before that, but needed to try something different as i couldn't keep having suicidal dips. I'm a mum.
