I love how considered you are about everything, the Cosy Handmade dress looks amazing, it looks like it might give my current favourite the Kielo wrap dress a run for it's money. Also want to try the Naya, sewing the basics is so satisfying. Have you looked at the Juno trousers, shout out for the Vera top as another long sleeved free pattern! Which I know you also like.

I have two favourite patterns for 2024. The Friday Pattern Company Westcliffe Dress and the Nina Lee Southbank Dress.

Personal opinion about tiny prints, very full volume garments look better than the style you tried. Ruffles, tiers etc 😉

A really useful vlog for me, (being 5’1” with a round bum 🤣), I will be trying the trousers 👍. My most made pattern this year was Grainline Studio Archer shirt, I’ve made 5 and 3 SOI Pussy Bow Blouses ❤

I always love your pattern picks. I try to look in my stash if I have something similar. In the Netherlands we have subscriptions to sewing magazines which come out every month with loads of patterns for a relatively low price. Sometimes I do buy single patterns (still thinking about that beautiful seasons dress) because instructions tend to be really bad with some of those Dutch magazines. But I do have some really nice patterns that I have used over and over. Often, if left with scraps, I will make a matching scarf.

My favorite this year has definitely been the Pattern Scout Comfi lounge tee and pants set. They fit me so well and I have hacked the life out of them. It’s drafted for knits but I have made the pants with a woven. I have added in seam pockets, patch pockets from and back. It’s kind of like a sloper for me. The tee is fitted, but not tight and I have added cuffs and changed the neck line. I’ve gotten miles out of these patterns. I enjoyed the hits and the misses, always something to learn in both.

My favourite is a big four, McCalls 7022 view F. It's a skirt I've made four times because it really suits my style. Of course, the sizing is all wrong on these patterns! On the chart my measurements have me as size 16 but, through trial and error, the correct size for me is a 10. My advice is always to measure the pattern pieces! View F is a circle skirt with a yoke. There's approximately five metres of hem so, if you have difficulty with hand sewing, as I do, your blind hem option on your machine is a life saver. I get lots of compliments when I wear this skirt.

Your opinion on “flattering” is right on! Someone close to me said women over 40 should dress their age and not like young girls. I have no idea why I felt it was directed at me, because I’ve never worn ill-fitting or inappropriate clothing, but I took it as an insult! Of course! My response is when they designate ready to wear clothing sections into departments as “Grandmas”, “Over 40”, etc. then I’ll dress my age! I definitely have some fitting issues that I’m self conscious about but I’m doing pretty good at making tops that are comfortable in the sense of ease, and sense of being stylish without being totally covered. My favorite pattern is the one I copied from a ready to wear. I’d love to see some of your makes with specific pieces from other patterns. I’m anxious to go back and watch some of your previous videos. I don’t think I found you until October or November.

I think using the same pattern again and again is a great idea. If something feels good, why not. I have made several Sew Me Something Jessica dresses in a range of fabric with varied sleeve choices. Happy days !

Absolutely and emphatically agree with your views on ‘flattering’ and the patriarchal views! I work in a primary school and am regularly empowering the children to be the best version of themselves and encouraging them to smash stereotypes and perceptions x

My most favourite top pattern is the Avid Seamstrees drop shoulder top, this is a free pattern as well.

I did the pietra pants but I did a full butt adjustment because I have a big bum.

💜 thank you for being brave enough to show your pattern fails. And I agree with your comments about the term "flattering" and body size and shape. I believe in "Every Body is a Good Body". My comment on the pants with the big pockets on the hips, is that the pockets are out of proportion to the pants. Different pockets might work better PS what is travertine? I'm in the US and I don't know that term

Hello sweet Sam! What a joy to crawl out of the Covid bed after more than two days, with the exception of a trip to the ER, to listen to your chat! I’m finding you in sewing for myself once again! I really suffered burnout from all the alterations I did for others for years. It is definitely not the same thing (alterations) as sewing from scratch. I’m not sorry I learned to alterations; I just wish i had left more time for me made! The community feel I got from you was enormous; the organization, well, I think I’m too old to learn now! I’ve made four tops, an apron, and a robe since November! All the tops I made were from a pattern I created from the most comfortable lightweight sweatshirt ever. I got craft paint on the front of it and couldn’t wear it without remembering to change it if I stepped out. One top was from the $3 taffeta from the thrift store! I added to the fold before cutting so that I could put elastic around the neck and wear it as a pullover. It turned out beautifully! Thank you so much for the time you spend with us (me)!
