What happens at the end of world? You might not expect it...
Thank you Stephen. Looks good! On a vaguely related theme, I have just read John Barton's The Word. A relatively easy read, quite entertaining in places, on Bible translation. He comments on quite a wide range of translations and particularly interesting was his referencing the Grail Psalms. He missed Dr Nyland's The Source, which I thought a pity, but in a book that size can only quote a few interesting examples/comparisons. Anyway, I found it an enjoyable read and quite an eye-opener on the enormous difficulties facing anyone trying to translate (almost?) any book in the OT and NT into English.
Thanks. The Lord bless you
Thank you,Pastor. Continued Blessings 🌹⭐🔥⭐🌹
How does it differ from the general 'Genre' sections found in any standard commentary introduction?
It doesn't really identify anything, rather it tells you how to identify the genres for yourself, even in paragraphs. I definitely learned something
@@pastorslibrary Thanks.
Very good, but now you’ll have to do a video on Jeannine K Brown’s new book on embedded genres in the NT. The task is never ending 😊
I have just ordered a copy - so I will see when it arrives - thanks for the tip! Bless you!
How did I not know that Michael Bird was a Calvinist?! 🤷
He claims to be one and when cornered he is, but he is also quite open in some areas. Bless you!
@@pastorslibrary I definitely enjoy the bulk of his work, and appreciate his sense of humor. He's fun (and informative) to listen to.
Pastor Steve, what do you make of the new perspective of Paul?
I am filming a video this week on that issue...watch this space. Blessings!
@@pastorslibrary I'll be first in line! 🙂
That William Lane Craig book cover looks strikingly similar to Dominion by Tom Holland as I recall. (I don't own either however.)
I would never have made the connection - well done - I tend to miss visual cues!
As far as I'm concerned, one can never go wrong with any commentary by Ben Witherington or David deSilva.
Amen and Amen!!!!!
I love that you highlighted Klyne Snodgrass as a recommended volume. I recently discovered his work, and have started his book on identity called "Who God Says You Are"; it's amazing!
Thanks for the recommendation -up to now that was the only book i had of his.
@@pastorslibrary I guess his book on the parables is excellent as well. I plan on ordering it within the week.
I think the bulk of those Abington commentaries are fun little volumes.
Can i use that phrase please? Bless you!!!
@@pastorslibrary Absolutely!
Does O'Brien have ANY commentaries that have not been pulled from print??
So both of O'Brien's commentaries were pulled? Was there suspected plagiarism in each of them?
Do you like David deSilva? I'm currently reading his book "Transformation" and really enjoying it.
I like Scot McKnight, but sometimes I think he comes across as a bit "liberal".
Pastor Steve, are you a fan of Michael Heiser?
I like his accessible writing style and I have been persuaded against the children of Seth position that I previously held onto, so I would say that I miss the guy
@@pastorslibrary Yes, I definitely hold to his view of Genesis 6. Not sure if you've read "Reversing Hermon", but I really enjoyed that one. Looking forward to the new release next year.
@@e.m.8094 Reversing Hermon was the very first of his books that I read and that got me hooked
I love finding some of these commentaries at my local used book stores. The thing that always bothers me though is when they have tons of highlighting and writing in them. Unless it's dirt cheap (or extremely rare) I just can't bring myself to buy a used book like that.
I am the same....until they are £10 but a new one is £70...then i can put up with the highlighting
I really like the NICT commentaries. Since they're only "semi-technical", those of us who don't know Greek can get much benefit from them. Definitely one of my favorite series so far.
Absolutely agree!
This is becoming my favorite channel to check out before buying. After watching this I just ordered Fee's commentary. I 've been reading Osborne and enjoying it much! The other day I was searching for Exodus commentary and bumbed into a great deal for Stuart's. Then checked your review and found it on the top! That sealed the deal. Your decades of reading and willingness to share your insights is soooo helpful and saves heaps of our time and even money!! Heartfelt thanks Pastor!!
You are very kind. I absolutely love Fee on Revelation. It is the text of his original lecture series which I still have on CD (I had them on tape and copied them to CD, now I have them as MP3's. Enjoy!!
Awesome video. I go to a church in Jacksonville Florida and we are very mixed bunch ha. But yes there are some churches that seem segregated but they would never say that is on purpose. Things are changing though.
Amen! Let it be so!
Blessings,Pastor. Thank you for your excellent work.🌹🌞🔥🌞🌹Loved hearing about your congregation.
Thank you so much! God bless you!
Im skeptical because the theory of hermenutics had a critical (marxist) turn. The critical lens (through critical race theory or feminist theory etc) is actually not good hermeneutics becaise it ignores the author. To say x is antiracist lands squarely in the Ibram x Kendi marxism. The author didnt write as a native american - they wrote as jewish 1st century ( really second temple jewish liturature) to read it with any other lens is to distort it. The bible never affirms the Darwinian/Rousseauian concepts of race. Its using a modern prerspective and reading that back into the text, its anachronistic in its premise. Critical reinterpretation is a major problem in todays church.
Sounds really interesting! Great to see different places encouraging reading from a wide range of views because, like you say, none of us get it completely right. As long as it's not just diversity for diversity's sake... And it sounds like this isn't. Real substance is what we like to read! Another great video, thanks 🎉
Here in the United States we can’t even get along with ourselves much less anyone from different ethnic groups.
You had me laughing there!
👍
As ever, I appreciate the support! Bless you!

Bless you!!
I’m glad someone else mentioned Marshall in the ICC series - done with Phillip Towner. Otherwise, a very comprehensive list.
Thanks for your support and helpful comment! Blessings!
I.H Marshall in the ICC is incredible, we have so many riches on the PE!
To be truthful Marshall is great at almost everything he does! Thank God for men of his stature!
Great discussion! I have Mounce on Logos Bible Software
Thank God for Logos! Mounce is excellent and with the indexing in Logos he is even easier to find your way around! Bless you!
You mention buying these books. I picture you standing in line at an cornerfront store with a basket full of books. Odd thing is, I have never once seen a store that sells commentary’s or monographs, or dictionaries or lexicons. I don’t even know what ide type into google maps to search for stores that sell these books. But cudo’s for having a talent for finding all these books.
I chuckled as I read your imagination of me with a basket full of books. I marvelled when I did some travelling in the southern USA a few years back at the amazing range of Christian bookshops , some of which were more like the size of British supermarkets. Almost all our UK Christian bookshops (that were mainly small independents) have gone now, and we are dependant on the internet to access theology books. We have a small number of specialist Christian dealers on the web or the huge range of Amazon. It would be my dream to walk into Mardels again! (Even their website is blocked from the UK). Bless you!
@@pastorslibrary Thats rather sad to hear. I’ve been to the UK a few times but haven’t spent much time there. Mostly just work or leisure. For some reason I always imagined access to stores like that anywhere in Europe being more available. I also haven’t spent much time in the South USA, but one thing I do know about that area is that they do LOVE their Bible. Well maybe one day Mardels will come back. I had to buy all my books online also, im currently a Logos user.
Brilliant! Thanks
Thank you! God bless you!
I notice you're very keen on the New Beacon Bible Commentary series in general. It rarely gets mentioned elsewhere in top commentary recommendations. In fact I can't remember it appearing in anyone else's lists. What makes you like the series so much? Is it a particular theological viewpoint?
Good question!!! I think that everything about them is great - the clear layout and great use of subheadings, tables and shading, helps to make them accessible. The publisher favours 'free will theism' , so you are unlikely to get any determinism running through the background (or even the foreground). They are mainly written by people who have had another publication, but not at the frequency of NT Wright or Ben Witherington, and this might be their first commentary - this means that they we get exposed to fresh authors who have some street cred. The "straight to paperback" policy means that they are competitively priced to start with. I have noticed that in the last couple of years there has been more mention of them, particularly in Gupta's guide to New Testament Commentaries. The only thing I can say is to maybe try one sometime? I have found them to be a great source of ideas as well as linking to older sources. God bless you!!!
@@pastorslibrary Thank you. I have a 14 volume NT set of them in Olive Tree which I bought for $39.99, but tend to default to the commentaries in my Logos library. I'll make sure to check them out.
@@paulcaneparo3872 Sounds great! Enjoy!
@@pastorslibrary Olive Tree were even selling 15 OT volumes for $49.99!
@@paulcaneparo3872 Wow!!!
A friend of mine interacts with Bill Mounce fairly regularly and asked him for me if there was a chance of his commentary being updated and it seems that the publisher has no current plans, but Dr. Mounce has wanted to do it for years.
Shame. They can wait too long! Let's hope for a change of mind. Bless you!
Great list, thanks!!! Again, you picked a really interesting verse to compare. Thanks for the time and effort you put into these 🎉
Appreciate your support! Blessings!
Also the new nivac 1 volume commentary came out. Its basically a concise version of the whole series. Would love to hear your opinion
I have it in Logos. I like the one volume Nivac a lot! Instead of three sections, it has two, original meaning and application. I used it for my sermon on Acts 10:1-33 last week and it helped a lot. Sometimes you don’t want to wade through a lot of verbiage, you want to cut to the chase and get right to the meaning and the application, this commentary does that really well! It also helped me to focus for my message on sfor this Sunday.
I am waiting for it. The UK publishing date has been put back and if I try to order from the USA I find that they tell me I have to wait.... I am looking forward to getting my hands on one!
Love this. Thanks pastor. What book are you preaching through now?
I have spent most of the year going through John's gospel (26 weeks). Just about to start something thematic for the autumn to do with clashing world views between the world and the church. Bless you!
New video! 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you! Blessings!
Although I consult many other authors, Keener is always my FIRST go-to scholar. He is truly a blessing to biblical scholarship.
Can't disagree - he is a great asset! Bless you!
Pastor, in systematic theology, we can break your 30 year rule, especially if they’re seminal thinkers like Austin Farrar! I have enjoyed his earlier, more thematic study of Revelation: The Rebirth of Images.
Ah bless you my friend! It is good to know we have Farrar in common as well as Jesus!!!
Thanks for this! Always interesting to see who CS Lewis surrounded himself with. Great to see some solid theology we can rely on and build upon - thanks for drawing our attention to him!
Thank you Reverend. Haven’t read anything by Farrer, but appreciate knowing about him
Thanks for supporting the channel. God bless you!
Can I download this book in free is there any free site
I am sorry, but I am not aware of any. There are websites that will offer a student discount but in general it is hard to get up to date works for free. Bless you!
My top 3 are Seifrid, Garland and Harris. Continue the great work. Steve
Bless you mate! Always glad of your comments!
I love Murphy-O’Connor on 2 Corinthians too! Because the Greek of 2 Corinthians is some of the most difficult in the NT, you really need a large commentary like Harris. An excellent small commentary is James W. Thompson, Preaching Second Corinthians. He says this on 3:7-11: “Despite the appearances of Paul’s ministry, with its pain and suffering, it is the ministry of the spirit that is more glorious than that of Moses. Although Paul has no shining face as a sign of glory, he recognizes the paradoxical glory of his ministry of weakness.”
That is going the extra mile my friend - well done! As for M O'C - you and I must start a fan club! Blessings
Well done Stephen
Bless you Bill! See you soon!
Thank you so much. Great coverage. Dr. Witherington told me he has no plans to update and revise his commentary on Acts so I would cautiously assume that this would be true of this volume as well.
What a shame.... but bless him he has a full workload as it is! Maybe the publishres will engage one of his students to revise his work - seems to be a current idea that is out there
Thanks, Pastor! What do you think about the BECNT series on this? Personally, I find the WBC series by Martin to be very good.
Despite having a shelf full of BECNT, I do not have 2 Corinthians and so didn't feel able to comment. As a rule they offer a fabulous consistency, but if I don't have access I hold my peace. Bless you
Thanks sir
Thank you too! There would be no channel without people to listen in, so I appreciate it!
Thanks as always my brother
Thank you for your continued support! Blessings!
Thanks, Pastor! Really interesting to hear the different commentators on the one verse. What made you choose that verse in particular? Very helpful video thank you!
I looked through a few verses and the responses and settled on it becasue I thought there was enough variation...
