Where to start our Biblical Studies? Introduction in Seven Sentences
I actually always look to the Jews to help me understand God. The way I see it, i’m still at least technically speaking an outsider coming in to believe in and worship their God. Only I have some additional beliefs such as Jesus & The Trinity. But I have found that when it comes to understanding God the Father look no further than a Jew. I read one on the Zohar and by golly it was incredible, and on Law, and Family, and Women. So many topics that mainstream Christianity struggles with on a consistent basis can possibly be enlightened by looking to a Jewish publication.
Thank you so much for that - what a help to anyone else reading this! God bless you Zephrum!
Well done pastor.
Thank you Chris! Blessings!
Ok I have to say I really find it heart-warming every time you say, "Byeeeee."
Well....in that case I will say Byeeeee....
Another excellent video. You seem like the kind of pastor I would enjoy as a friend.
How kind of you! I accept that as a compliment with gratitude. May God bless you!
Absolutely LOVE the jumper 🎉😂
It was bought for me by someone very close to me...
Really interesting list! Soo funny that you got a recommendation under duress 😂😂 sounds like it was a very good one though. Pity the next edition was a bad update!
Really interesting idea and video, thanks... I suppose my only hesitation is that they don't find Jesus in the scriptures, where Christians can see Him all over. But you can't dispute their knowledge of Hebrew and unique perspective and understanding of the Torah, so it could certainly be valuable. Definitely wouldn't recommend non-Christian Commentaries as a first or second set for anyone I know!
Thank you, Stephen, for making me aware of this theological perspective. I do indeed hold a version of (just learned) New Perspective in my own studying of Paul's writings, most especially in Romans and Galatians. Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.(Romans 3:31) Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law.(Galatians 3:21) So, I did not know there was a theological name for the family of thought that I have ascribed. Thank you for that. And I just love the name "covenantal nomianism." Now, I'm not fully educated on what that means, but I plan on finding out now. There is definitely spiritual benefit from obedience, as God intended, of the law. I will leave you with this, as far as justification: What one cannot gain by moral perfection, one cannot loose by moral imperfection. Thus, justification is by grace alone. Sanctification, on the other hand, is that perfecting of what is expected of those that bear His image. It is fully 100% relational with our God and Redeemer through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Bless you for your study, love of God, love for His people, and search for Truth. God bless you richly. Yours in Christ always.
Thank you so much for your helpful description of your journey, I do appreciate reading your comments. God bless you!
Thank you for always being a fresh word as we seek to understand The Word.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. God bless you!
I definitely like physical copies of books over digital as well. I'm starting to run out of shelf space however. 😂
I understand. I am so blessed with the amount of office space I have at the moment, but it is always a challenge! God bless you!
I've read many Jewish resources, and have benefited immensely. I'll have to obtain this series at some point. I've heard several good things about the Genesis edition. Do you have the Stone Chumash, Pastor? I've really enjoyed that commentary.
Thank you so much for pointing out the Chumash - I had not come across it before, so I have started price watching it this morning and will buy soon. God bless you!
@@pastorslibrary The full title of the one I'm referring to is called "The Chumash: The Stone Edition, Full Size (ArtScroll)".
I've always found this series on both the Pentateuch and the other OT books very helpful. Jews too are people of faith that we can and should and need to learn from. Highly recommended.
Thanks for that supportive comment. God bless you Steve!
Absolutely, I actually have many works from Jacob Neusner, and also from JPS. Their always pretty solid.
Thank you Pastor! I would like to thank you for providing quality content in regards to this kind of resources. You are my go to person when it comes to biblical resources. However.... I'm wondering, could you make a video sharing on how you manage to read, digest and go through so much commentaries? How do you read commentaries? The amount that you chew through is quite a lot! I would like to adopt your reading methodology so I can read more myself.
Thank you for that question - I will put it on my "to do" list! God bless you and thanks for taking the time to comment
To preserve paperback books better, use contact paper. I buy it 20 sheets in a pack and usually use 4 per book. I start the back first, being sure to overlap the spine well. Then do the front with a similar overlap of the spine. Then I cut sheets to barely fit inside the covers and overlap the fold overs of the outer covers. With some practice, one can achieve a reasonably good look, but immense reinforcement of the covers and spine. I do my very best to preserve my paperback spines, like Stephen does. Thanks for all your hard work preparing these videos. I very much appreciate your knowledge, love of quality books, and love of God!
Thank you so much for this great tip - I hope others will read it! God bless you and thanks for taking the time to comment!
I like the old Halley's and Unger's handbooks for single-volume, basic outline, though I often have differing viewpoints. After that, I go book by book, especially Judaica press Hebrew/English and Barclays NT series
It is just great to have books like this that you can depend on and have learned to find your way around. God bless you and thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!
Thanks brother. God bless✝️❤️🙏
Thank you Jimmy! God bless you too!!!
Thank you,Pastor, for your God-centered, excellent service for the Body of Christ.🌹🌟🔥🌟🌹
You are very kind! May God bless you and have a very happy year walking with Him!
In many traditional African cultures, when one says "it is the will of God" for example, if a child has died , it means they were not cursed. The "will of God" doesn't mean in the deterministic/Calvinistic sense. Hope it helps in your sieving. Great video
Thank you for explaining that - very helpful indeed. God bless you and thanks for taking the time to comment.
I just finished working through Tanners Volume in the EEC Series, and i think it is outstanding. The depth ist great, especialliy on something like Daniel 9,24-27. His judgement ist conservativ and well made, the conclusions are clearly coming out of his exegesis and he does a great job with commenting on the wider theological implications and Application. The Layout is both good and a struggle at the same time, but something, that you can get used to. Overall a great volume, that i think is great vor preachers/teachers for its depth on the one side and on the other for being close to the life of the believer. Just a word on the Layout - The commentary is split in multiple parts: Textual Notes (which is quite interesting given the multiple greek versions), Translation, the commentary itself, biblical theological implications comments and Devotional/Application. All of these (except maybe the last) have a lot of great footnotes. This means, that it is quite easy to find specific information in this book, which is great. It also means, that it is a bit fiddly keeping track of all these different sections. All in all i think its good and it gets better and better the more you work with it.
I have the African one and Strong Holman illustrated. Great video
Thank you very much for taking the time to comment. God bless you!
I have the New Interpreter's One Volume Commentary, very useful. My favorite one volume commentary is the Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible. Also, I have Raymond E. Brown's magnum opuses "Birth of the Messiah" and "Death of the Messiah" on my bookshelf but I haven't gotten around to reading them.
Those works by Brown are well worth the time - a great addition to your bookshelf! I really do recommend the new Jerome - i hope it is still there for you! God bless!
Happy new year Pastor. A few of these commentaries are very hard to get here in the states digitally, I would love the one volume New interpreters and the Jerome 3rd edition, but they are not yet available. I agree with what you said about the NIV Application Commentary, it has been very helpful in my sermon prep. If I may cheat a little, the two volume abridged expositor’s Bible commentary is very good, and the Baker illustrated Bible Commentary is very good. I too have enjoyed Raymond Brown’s writings, his two volumes on John are still mammoth and awesome after all these years. I’m not 100% sure how conservative he is, but his scholarship is of the highest order, and I completely respect his work. I think his book on the infancy narratives and his two volume death of the Messiah are still worth reading today. I love Raymond Brown’s scholarship and Fitzmyer’s scholarship. I still get a charge reading them today.
I second the abridged expositor’s. As for the New Interpreter's One Volume, it’s available on Olive Tree digitally, if that’s an option for you.
Happy for you to cheat! I have the Baker illustrated Bible Dictionary and the Baker Illustrated Study Bible but hadn't discovered that...I suppose I should have guessed really. I will look into it. I would describe Brown as conservative ( although I am not always sure that the word means the same this side of the Atlantic), but I find his writing very engaging. I especially agree about John and the epistles. I can see us getting along well!!! Bless you!
@@babasingapura Thanks for being so helpful!
Hello Pastor and Happy New Year. Enjoyed the new video. I know you dont buy many 1 volume commentaries but I kinda like them before I move on to the more detailed ones. I dont know if you knew but the Africa and Asia commentaries have a third "brother" commentary called The Central and Eastern European Commentary. It has the similar layout as the other two. Now here is the funny part, I was in a used bookstore last week and saw the New Jerome Commentary for way less money and left it in the store. I guess I have to go back and see if its still there, The other reason is I do have another Catholic Commentary called the New Collegeville Bible Commentary so I guess I thought I didnt need another one. But now I might have to go back and get it. Lastly I think you are Pentecostal and if you are there are 2 NT commentaries that may interest you. One is The Complete Biblical Library( two volume condensed set, not the larger multivolume one) and the Life In the Spirit NT Commentary. I think they are good offerings but again I know you dont buy them but they may be good for people like me who you know that aren't in Seminary but need good resources. Any way keep up the good work and I look forward to next Wednesday. Byeeeeeeeee!!!!!!
Thank you so much for letting me know about the Central and Eastern European commentary - I had no idea it existed but will look for it. I hope that New Jerome is still there for you! I will also look into the other two titles. Thanks for take the time to comment and God bless you!
Happy New Year brother
...and the same to you. A year of rich blessings for you!
I so much enjoy your channel and often learn of things to buy. I bought this one a few months back because I didn’t think I could afford the whole set and I’m too impatient to build it 😂. If I had a question it would be how do you navigate such a large reference library? I know you like the New Beacon and New Interpreters but are you reading from various sets when you research a passage? My library isn’t nearly what yours is and I sometimes struggle trying to read everything I have on a given passage. I just wondered how you do it? I’m also waiting on the single volume commentary post too. Sorry I know that’s a lot but I look forward to your Wednesday posts. Anyway hope you had a good Christmas and have a Happy New Year. Thanks for all you do to help us.
You are very kind - thank you for taking the time to write this response. Having the room to display the books is essential - I am not sure that a digital solution would be as helpful in this sense, but a good database (in my case driven by Excel) making clear what I do have access to is essential. Personally I do build up a memory of what shelf I was looking at when I found something...might jut be me... I do tend to milk a series that I have found to be generally helpful first, but just go down the list if I don't find what I am looking for. I am filming the single volume commentary video in the next 48 hours so expect to see that within the next 2 weeks. Thank you and God bless you!
Thank you so much for your review…I received my copy earlier this week.
How about similar books for Biblical Theology?
Good point . I am putting together a video on this but it might be the end of Jan or beginning of Feb before this is available. I might do NT first. Thanks for your suggestion and taking the time to comment. Blessings!!!
Merry Christmas. Hope your holidays are well. Loved the Star Trek sweater. My first and middle names were based off Star Trek characters. My parents were huge fans.
Wow! You are probably the first Zephrum I have ever met!! The question is whether your rock and roll tastes are the same as Mr Cochrane? God bless you and thanks for commenting!
Merry Christmas brother
And also to you. God bless you for your regular support
Merry Christmas Pastor. I enjoy your content and have bought several of your recommendations. I went to EBay and purchased this one volume commentary for $36. So excited.
Thanks for the feedback and a very merry Christmas to you too!
Merry Christmas, Pastor and Family. LOVE THE XMAS SWEATER!!!🌹🌟🔥🌟🌹
You can thank my daughter for the sweater, it comes out maybe twice each December. God bless you and yours this Christmas!
A very merry Christmas to you, Pastor! Thank you for your online ministry to those of us who want more from our bibles than a decent translation. All the best to you and your congregations, both real and virtual, now and in the years ahead.
Thank you so much for your regular comments and support. God bless you and a merry Christmas
Steven, I hope you don't mind me suggesting this for a future video. I've recently retired from Parish ministry in Scotland and I completed my BD in 1996. I'd be grateful if you could suggest books that reflect some of the current thinking and advances in the following areas: Old Testament New Testament Church History Systematic Theology The social world of the Old and New Testaments Second Temple Judaism I know it's a lot to ask, but listening to your vidoes I realise my library is now a wee bit dated.
Thanks for your meaningful question. Have you seen my recent video "3 books to help you study the Bible cover to cover?" Also if you search for Systematic Theology there are a couple of well worn but relevant videos that will come up. I have it on my plan to do a systematic theology update by the spring though.. I will add second temple Judaism and the social world to my list as they are very good ideas. There is at least one New Testament video planned for the near future as well as a New Testament Theology one. Keep checking back and you will see some of these covered. My library is fairly weak on Church History, so that might be a while...Thanks so much for the contact. God bless you!
@pastorslibrary Thanks, Steven. I'll look at the videos you suggested and wait for he updated systematics video. Looking forward to seeing Second Temple and social world videos when you post them, too. Also, Church History is such a big area. I doubt there are any one volume overviews.
Dear pastor, what are the main differences between this volume and the Life Application Study Bible? And which of the two do you prefer?
This volume is a step up from the life application bible - which is one of the best study bibles. It will answer questions that simply will into fit in any study bible. If you feel you are ready for something more then I can recommend it. God bless you!
Thank you, Reverend. I appreciate what you say about it being a good one-volume step-up resource. My favourite one in this class is the 2-volume abridgement of the EBC series, even though (and perhaps because) it has some extra space. If you own this, please consider including it in your upcoming video. That said, I won’t be getting the one-volume NIVAC. I have some of the original volumes, and I value their introductions and original meaning sections. I prefer the full-fat originals to the skimmed-milk version! Another way to say it is that I’ve moved on past the one-volume stage of acquiring resources.
Thank you for taking the time to recommend the EBC - I don't have it, but I will look around for it. I understand your position, I probably wouldn't have bought it unless I had the channel to feed! God bless you!
@@pastorslibrary the title is The Expositor's Bible Commentary: Abridged Edition. OT: 1,568 pages; NT: 1,264 pages.
They make it accessible price wise?
I paid $43 to get it from the USA to the UK. When it eventually comes out over here, it is pre-selling for £32. God bless you!
@ thats really not bad at all considering they’ll get you for a grand for the whole NIVAC just about. I can afford something like that. I’ll keep my eye out.
🌹💐🌟💐🌹
thank you! Blessings!
Hi Steven, I have this also. A great reference for study, preaching, and teaching.
Thanks for your feedback! May God bless you!
I got one not too long ago 😆
are you from the USA? What a blessing it is!
@pastorslibrary I'm actually not, I'm from South Africa 😂
I almost had coffee come out of my nose when you mentioned Oscar. His interview with Dick Cavitt (sp?) is a work of musical art. His theology… I’m not so sure. From the US, Merry Christmas. Thank you for your channel. A newer Lay subscriber.
I am sorry for potentially causing a loss of good coffee - you made me laugh!! My editor point blank refused to remove my gaff because it made her laugh so much! Bless you!
These look very useful indeed. Thanks for introducing them to us!
My pleasure - God bless you!
I am SO EXCITED to begin collecting this little 3-book series! Thank you for sharing. I can’t decide which one I want to start with-all three sound delicious! God bless. Here’s to growing your channel!
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. God bless you!
Maybe you'll become a fully fledged Old Testament Scholar yet! 😆 Thanks for another helpful video... I really like the look of these books. And remember... every time you blink, either McKnight or Gupta have a fresh release ready to read 😁
too true! May God bless you in your studies!
What books have made you want to study part of the Bible you've never studied before? 📚
I'm at the early point in my studies where every book I open points me to a part of the Bible I haven't studied yet........ but I'm definitely more interested in the NT for now!
Which of Craig Keener's books would be your favorite if you had to pick just one?
That's a tough one. I suppose the one I have used the most over the years is the Bible Background Commentary New Testament - it is just so incredibly useful. As a work of art, then I would pick the four volume commentary on Acts. Bless you!
@pastorslibrary I don't have the big set on the Book of Acts yet, but my answer is the same as far as the Bible background New Testament commentary. Such a valuable resource!
Wonderful to hear you recommend Michael S. Heiser. Thank you for your video.
Bless you - you can't keep a good man down and he was a good man
Perfect timing for Christmas!
I do my best - but we do need ideas don't we?
I first heard of Fretheim from his Exodus commentary and it was BRILLIANT. I'll have to check it out.
Yes it was, and to be fair I have never been disappointed in him. Try googling the eulogy that Bruggeman wrote for him...
Ooo these are excellent suggestions!! I love the idea of a gift of a journal subscription since you get maybe a few parcels throughout the year to look forward to. I also have to say I really think it's amazing what you can manage to read in one evening! 😂
I can only say that I get such inspiration from some of my regular subscribers such as yourself!
@pastorslibrary 😁😁😁
What are the best books you could give or receive this Christmas? 🎁🎄
Speaking of tragic losses of theological minds in 2024, I'd absolutely recommend anything by Roger Forster. He wrote anything from very digestible work to writings that take more chewing over. Something for everyone!
The ESV study bible frequently goes on sale around Christmas. One of the best ever. The NLT study bible as well.
