PSA Squash - How To Own The 'T' And Volley Anything
Listen to a story about Ahad's journey through squash, and then learn via a rally featuring Curtis Malik from the World Team Championships. Malik's use of a three-part disruption strategy is broken down:
- Building pressure with a quality two-wall boast from a defensive position.
- Anticipating the opponent’s response, stepping up on the T to intercept and cut off angles.
- Adjusting technique by shifting grip for early contact and precise execution.
These insights offer a framework for players to refine their skills and improve their strategic thinking on court. The importance of focused training, mental discipline, and embracing the process of learning is emphasized throughout.

I don't want to take anything away from Curtis but, Mazen's shots were sub par for the level these guys play at. It's easier to attack when your opponent is playing garbage shots is all I'm saying.

I keep watching this, it’s my favourite video on your channel. Nice to hear you giggling like a kid with a new toy when describing how awesome Diego is. Can we have more of such videos of you playing against a top 50 player? There’s so much to be gained from appreciating how good they really are when playing what I would call a top club or state level player. The difference is astounding!

I quite liked the personal stories as a sugue to the title content. I missed any timestamp which would have easily allowed anyone to skip ahead but I was good with that. That point #3 of adjusting grip when moving forwards to volley is something I forgot/didn't know about - thanks!

  • @Pthunderful
    @Pthunderful 5 дней назад

Always enjoy your content but agree with bruiser. I think the idea about t position and grip change would have made an interesting video alone…at what point in the match can you afford to be really aggressive with T to set up your volley.

I appreciate the feedback. It's interesting because I've heard from several folks that they appreciate hearing about my experiences, because they relate to them. That being said, I'll definitely use different formats to add value for everyone. Did timestamp appear underneath the video such that you could forward past the story? Please do let me know. That's an important feature allowing folks to get right to the analysis if that's what they prefer. Thanks again for your ongoing support, - Ahad

Appreciate the feedback. Stories of personal experience often help others relate to difficulties they're also facing, and at times can help create "aha" moments in my experience. That being said, did you not find Malik controlling the mid court, strong forward, and taking the ball early? All the best, - Ahad

@ yea he was controlling the rally but he wasn’t “volleying everything”. I’m not really saying you weren’t correct in what you were talking about in the video but it just had nothing to do with the title which is confusing and I’m sure will make people click off the video early. Just my two cents lol

I hear you. It's certainly an investment one has to consider. Having used it almost daily now for close to 2 months, it is well worth the investment for me - I use it for my own training (which is key since I don't have someone feeding me!), and with my students (to refine specific shots, completing double feeding, etc.). I went with this machine because it is cordless, the battery life is quite good (3-4h - I've used it for 2-3h and it has been perfectly fine), it heats the balls, has capacity for 80 balls, and has multiple, easy to use programs via the remote control. It has a simple interface which has also been great! It's a great investment for an extremely avid player, or a competitive player, or a small group of enthusiastic players in my opinion. Happy to share more about it if desired. All the best, - Ahad

Ahad, amazing video with great commentary. It seems Diego is mili-second faster getting to your shots while you are mili-second slower getting to his shots. In result, you are not able to demonstrate your sharpness I've seen in your other plays and only deliver lower quality shots to Diego. In this case, how would you adjust your play tactics if you can play Diego next time? In many situations, if met outside, two players fitness, speed, shot skills may be similar, but inside the court, one player demonstrates supreme ability in hitting quality returns at the moment of pressure and on the heart bursting runs/stretch. Any thoughts on how to train on enhancing accuracy on a tough run/stretch? Thanks always and look forward to hearing your insight.

The ones that come well off the back wall but end up tight on the side wall are definitely not what we're taught to hit, but really effective because a drive in response is much riskier at more normal skill levels.

Often students ask how my kill shots are so sharp. I tell them its because i change my grip for almost every shot i make. Unless its identical shots consecutively. Ive been doing that since i was a badminton player before squash. And when im lazy and dont alter my grip, it often ends in mediocre quality. It does however add another layer to ur fatigue if u contantly have to think ans chabge ur grip. I guess i dont train enough is why.

Coming from badminton this makes a lot of sense, I always found it weird that the squash world was so fixated on one way to hold the racket. Hi Arshad - as you've noted, I would recommend seeing a physiotherapist at minimum. Some chiropractors are trained in multiple disciplines (and understand facial planes, and the interconnectedness of the body). That's actually the critical factor I'd recommend when finding someone - choose a practitioner that sees the body as a whole. Testing the knee will certainly diagnose the surface issues (e.g. ligament strain etc), but s more holistic practitioners will help you understand the root cause (e.g. biomechanical challenges, joint alignment, muscle activation; or a lack thereof in the glutes, for example). Wishing you a speedy recovery 🙏🏼 - Ahad

I must mention that subramanium often quickly measures whether it’s worth her while running for a short ball which can look like she’s given up or is tired. Compare with hamamy who runs for everything even if it looks impossible to reach, perhaps a waste of energy but means sometimes she reaches it and surprises herself. Ahad, what is your mental mindset? Do you make yourself run for everything or do you quickly calculate if it’s worth the effort?

You are correct. Different players will be "strategic" about how much effort to exert. The score line, the phase of the match etc. impacts this significantly of course. My mindset is to go for every ball unless I am WAY out of position, or it is at an inconsequential phase in a match. Hope this helps! All the best, - Ahad

What I really like about this video is how you can see the almost zen-like flow of a top 10 player between their movement and striking of the ball vs an otherwise “really good” player. The timing between moving and playing through a crisp shot, with virtually no effort, and getting so much power is a subtlety that’s difficult to understand for someone who has never played the game. It’s just as graceful watching a player like Diego as it is watching world class ballet. There’s a reason we call it the beautiful game!

Absolutely! I too felt that it would be a great demonstration of the differences, from anticipation to ball control, ease, and so much more! I'm glad you enjoyed it 🙏🏼 all the best, - Ahad

Thanks, especially useful tactic for masters, but i have 2 questions, one is where we should aim to hit on the Front wall for good height when hitting from the back court? And second is it safe to use cross lob from the back court on the bh side? As this is more vulnerable to opponent's volley....

Good questions - the cross court lob is a fantastic offensive shot if you have practiced it properly and are confident using it (no matter which side you're hitting it from)! I would aim somewhere along the top third of the front wall when using height from the back. Again, depending on your skill level, and the starting height of your shot (i.e. low ball or a high volley that you're resetting cross), the height on the front wall will differ. Hope this helps, - Ahad

Some amazing offense and defense by these guys. 4:28 is probably my favorite shot to watch and the least favorite to play, haha.
