How to find fossils on the Yorksire coast - Runswick bay - summer #fossilhunting for ammonites
Its the start of the summer holidays and lots of you will be heading out for a spot of fossil hunting possibly for the first time. Heres some tips for the Yorkshire coast
Dont forget to keep an eye on the tide times and stay safe. The cliffs are still dangerous at this time of year.

      The green shell is due to mineral replacement during fossilisation with chamocite which is an aluminium silicate of iron or chlorite. Different environmental conditions during fossilisation and available minerals mean that often fossils can be preserved in different ways

    I love that one! I have a great Asteroceras in a green ammonite nodule from Seatown but now seems like to need to hunt for an actual green specimen!

      They are usually yellow calcite?

      @@fossiliferous yep, the Seatown ones are a honey-coloured calcite usually, sometimes a darker brown. Was the chamosite one in the video from Scunthorpe?

    Found one in Filey and it's perfectly preserved. It's worth a look at the brigg

      Filey is too young for dumorts which are late toarcian stage - There are some good sections of OxfordIan there though about 20 million years younger

    Can I just ask my friend, do you need to give Yorkshire ammonites a few water baths to remove salt? I’ve heard coastal fossils have a lot of sea salt that can corrode a fossil.

      No need to soak yorkshire ammonites but I usually wash them when I get home to take off the salt and any other debris

    Great channel mate. I wanted to ask are Yorkshire pyrite ammonites prone to oxidisation and pyrite decay? For instance, your average dactylioceras?

      They are very stable but if you leave them outside they will eventually corrode and weather

      Getting a good one of these is hard as they are often poorly preserved and have little separation from the matrix. There has been lots of disappointment prior to getting this one 😆

    Nice finds, look forward to seeing the preps. Good chisels are hard to find, the older the better in my experience through work and hunting, the old metal seems to be better quality then even the top end tools now, car boots and the depths of grandparents sheds for them👍

    Great demonstration of just how hard the rocks at Burton Bradstock are! Some fantastic specimens though if you visit close enough to a fall before the local collectors have stripped everything out.

    It's fucking awful having to re-live the nautilus moment again and again. Awful. My jealousy levels are still at critical. Leaving inflammatory comments usually helps but it's not this time.

You might already know this but thought you might find this interesting, at the top of Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons, about an hour from me, you can see the remains of a fossilised seabed. I've had some great reactions when I've pointed it out to friends
