New Forest Explorers Guide - Badger cubs are frightened by the loud calls of a jackdaw
Просмотров 3720 часов назад
Sudden nearby noises will often frighten badger cubs and prompt a dash to the sett. Here the noise culprit is a jackdaw that means the cubs no harm at all.
New Forest Explorers Guide - Badgers come face-to-face with sheep (again)

Badger cubs and their mother are minding their own business, foraging near their sett as they do on most days, when a couple of lambs and a ewe arrive to disturb the tranquil scene. None mean the badgers any harm and equally, the badgers will not hurt lambs or ewe. The lambs curiosity, though, draws them towards the sett, and the badgers scuttle away. But eventually, these unusual companions le...
New Forest Explorers Guide - Badger tucks into a scavenged grey squirrel
Просмотров 157 часов назад
Against a backdrop of dawn chorus birdsong, a badger feasts on a not very appetising looking grey squirrel which presumably was scavenged road kill. The badger is disturbed by something unseen, off-camera, but returns five minutes later and carries off in the opposite direction, part of its meal. (Badger diet for much of the year mainly comprises invertebrates, particularly earthworms, but they...

New Forest Explorers Guide - Badgers are spooked first by a noisy jackdaw, and again by a pheasant
Просмотров 23719 часов назад
The big, wide world can be a strange and frightening place for badgers, especially during the hours of daylight when there’s lots to scare the more timid amongst them. Here, two adults and a cub briefly take cover underground after they’re startled by the call and beating wings of a noisy jackdaw; and then a couple of hours later, a metallic-sounding noise (probably the clanging of a grill stre...
New Forest Explorers Guide - Badgers, sheep and lots more

There's lots going on here! Badger cubs back away from an approaching sheep. Ewe and lambs try to work out exactly what it is they're seeing. Six cubs and two adults emerge to forage as soon as the coast is clear. Strong winds cause some badgers to flee. A bad tempered adult attacks a cub, causing it to squeal, which in turn alarms a nearby pheasant. And a willow warbler and blackbird sing. Lif...

New Forest Explorers Guide - Badger cubs sometimes make the strangest sounds
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.21 день назад
Four cubs and a sow run into view and go down to this sett, presumably arriving from the clan's other main sett which is around 500 metres away. One of the cubs manages to tumble into an enlarged tunnel entrance but eventually emerges, apparently unscathed. Lots of really strange badger vocalisations follow that sound at times almost like hens calling out. Thank you Daniel Evans for the followi...
New Forest Explorers Guide - Six badger cubs play as two adults look on
Просмотров 46221 день назад
It's mid-May deep in the countryside and six badger cubs play under the sometimes less that watchful eyes of a couple of adults. (In the background, a song thrush sings throughout, an oystercatcher calls as it flies by, and a blackcap adds a few loud bursts of song).

New Forest Explorers Guide - Badger cubs surprise in a sett previously thought not to be occupied
Просмотров 592Месяц назад
It's always a treat to see badger cubs, especially where they're not expected. In 2022, three cubs were raised in this small, 5-tunnel entrance sett; whilst in 2023, all three of that year's cubs were predated by a large boar badger. This year, the sett has appeared to be unoccupied - there's been no fresh spoil heaps, no bedding left on the surface; and no fresh latrines in their usual place. ...

Hi. Thanks so much for your comments - they're much appreciated. I put trail cameras out at three setts, one of which comprises a relatively limited number of much used tunnel entrances. I've not put food out there for at least 12 months as the likely presence and location of the badgers is fairly predictable. The other two setts are shared by a different group of badgers who move between the setts. I infrequently put the cameras out at these setts and do put food out there so as to be able to relatively quickly and easily monitor population numbers. I hope that helps. Kind regards, Andrew

Before moving from the Iberian Peninsula to Central Europe, I had never thought of the badger as a game animal, much less as a gastronomic delicacy. Now, I hunt them and eat them. I used to hunt thrushes in Spain. They're very challenging sport and delicious.
