Follow along and learn from my 35 years of personal experience I’ve acquired wrenching on my own project cars through the years. I’ve made lots of mistakes over those years and continue to experience new problems I’ve never seen before. See and learn how I overcome these challenges and find solutions without breaking the bank.
If you like 60's and 70's Mopars and / or you own a Mopar from that era this is the place for you. Keep in mind although the cars I work on are Mopars these actions and activities are applicable to all classic cars and what you learn here in most cases can be applied to any make and model.

MOPAR CHARGING SYSTEM test - Backyard

My battery died so I had to figure out what was going on. Turns out there was an issue in the charging system. It sure seems like its always the least likely issue that ends up being why you have a problem. And it goes to show you should never make assumptions about the simple things. Follow along and see if you can figure out what the problem is before I reveal it. For 68 Charger T shirts, cli...

This car is finally home.

I've owned this 1970 DODGE CHARGER for awhile now and it finally came home recently. It was going to be built into a PRO STREET car but the owner went with a 1970 PLYMOUTH 'CUDA instead. So my buddy ended up with the CHARGER and eventually I bought it off him for a GREAT DEAL. Getting the car home brought back some OLD MEMORIES on the FENDERS I gave my buddy for this cars many years ago. Watch ...

It was a close call for Doorthy, This could have been really bad. The VIBRATION got so bad I had to pull the DRIVESHAFT to see what was going on. To my SURPRISE one of the U JOINT clips had came out of its groove presumably during the last GEAR SWAP. I think if I had raced it on a longer DRAG STRIP it probably would have all came apart. @@Big_Block-pr1wp Thanks Big Block.
Where did you get those plugs?
@@stevodakine1 I just had them but I think you can get them from a hardware store. I also think O’Reily’s and AutoZone has them on those little racks where they have bolts. But I’m not 100% on that. And usually when you get a freeze plug set for your Mopar Big block I think it comes with 2 for the rear of the block. They usually don’t strip or rust out so I keep the old ones. Hope that helps. BTW, I think some of the firings might be really large on the aluminum WP housing so you might have to go to the hardware store to get that size.
Whatta deal!!
I was raised testing this way....But I agree it's not for newer cars
This is a quick test to only check your alternator. Not to run it.
Love the videos… keep them coming Brother.
@@mikesimmons5416 Thanks Mike.
Definitely for the pre computer cars only.
When I rebuilt the 11" brakes on the '69 R/T I got the later 1970s spring kit and the self adjusters and self adjusting hardware (cable/lever) to convert from the manual adjusters to self adjuster setup. Also, my manual adjusters were rusted tight.
I've seen many posts that say not to use Teflon tape for the engine block fitting, but to use liquid sealant.
It’s been working for me.
As far as surface rust eating into metal I don't know about in areas like near the ocean if you are or not but cars will out last you with that surface rust before bubbling and eating into it. 60s-70s cars have pretty good metal in them still. And just look at all the older 30s body's that still wear there surface rust with no holes. Here in the high desert area of Wyoming every thing seems to end up that way idk if it's the wind and blowing dirt/sand or what but almost all of my cars have some surface rust. Even my 87 and 91 D150s are starting to get it. First there clear coat came off then it slowly started coming through the primer. I just leave it alone and let it be. And that blue does look awesome with patina like that I myself have a 67 Dart that's a similar blue and it looks great with its surface rust. I was going to just flat black the car and primer the front fenders like a super stock dart but couldn't ruin that fine patina It took years for it to look that good. Would only take me hours to ruin it by paint it or putting something on it lol 😂
lol.
Awesome troubleshoot. I can say on my Sweptline I went through a few problems as well with Orileys parts. Glad yours was a bit more simple!
@@HighRevNation Thanks man. I appreciate that. I’ve gone through so many parts issues I can’t even count them all.
Your battery does more than just provide electricity. It also shorts AC, spikes and transients to ground. Removing the battery from the circuit allows those spikes and transients to travel around, endangering every semiconductor circuit in your car. Not a good test to perform on any car.
Looked like you had a revised square back...better alternator than the early round back stronger diode connections...
Mopar!
You know what's weird, I've never seen an external regulator fail. But I've had to replace alternators with an internal regulator more than once.
And you know the internal regulator for my Toyota cost more than a brand new alternator....so replacing the regulator is not an option..😂😂😂
@@TargaWheels Interesting. Thinking back through the years I only probably had one or two go bad. Most of the time it was the ground to it that was an issue.
👍👍👍
Fun fact it's called an alternator... Why.. Cause it produces A/C current... Ahh...you ask but it's a D/C system...good old rectified electric current....but still you can take a meter at A/C millvolts and read across you battery terminals and checkout A/C ripple to much and you know something is going wrong more than 50mvolts and it's time to dig in and find out why....and now you know..😂😂😂
Did you try putting the old regulator back on? If it works would you return the new one or just keep both of them?
I haven’t yet but I will put the Mopar one back on.
Good video! I built an engine run stand, broke in my 383 with a new alternator on it, but it wouldn’t charge. After break in we troubleshot everything and could ‘trick’ the alt to charge, but it wouldn’t on its own. Now I’m thinking the one thing we didn’t check is…
@@rong4189 It had me baffled man. Because you assume once it’s bolted in it’s gonna ground. One of those things you feel like there’s no way it can be that. I feel lucky I checked it. I’ve seen ground issues to the regulator before which is why I checked that but if I didn’t have the multi meter in my hand I doubt I woulda brought it out to check the alternator ground.
@@JonnyMopar yeah, I took it off the stand, I got to the point where I’m like “It’s gotta be my wiring on this run stand, I’ll just figure it out in the damn car!”
That was a weird problem.
Dumb question, but I'm pretty new. What's the piece called that you're removing at the 51 second mark?

I couldn't find an alt bracket fory 91 B250. So I bought that one. God! I hope it fits!!!!!! I have the other style alternator.
@@JDHamlin-l6w Oh man. Good luck. If it’s a big block it’ll fit the engine but I’m not sure about it fitting the different alternator.
@@JonnyMopar 318 S.B.
@@JDHamlin-l6w Ah. Pretty sure it won’t fit. But I’m sure that same company makes a small block set.
