This review analysis was truly great insight! My initial interpretation was very shallow and biblically centered, I found parallels between James and lucifer the "fallen angel" as he tormented her and "pushed her to commit the acts that led to his (or mankind's) demise" ( referencing sin and the apple scene again) when really it was a cycle of finger pointing and lack of accountability for man's own weakness. I also found that the movie had a lot of allegorical references to the abuse mankind puts upon mother nature which can be represented by harper. This means it wasn't referring directly to men but the human race and patriarchy as a whole. The men went to immoral, tormentfull and destructive extents to reach Harper, wether emotionally like James, spiritually or physiclly (which could reference the forbidden fruit and the apple scene) . The end scene really locks this in when she asks what James wants from her and he replies "your love". This could represent the unrequited and unconditional love and nurture man or mankind demands not only to mother nature but also to women in our society without fair or ethical exchange. I know this is all super messy but I hope my point got across. This movie was great in my opinion and theres so much more to unpack but it reminds me a lot of the Jennifer Lawrence film "Mother!", if you like this movie and haven't watched Mother, I highly suggest it.

Contrary to popular opinion, I believe the movie offers a narrative that goes beyond simply presenting men as monsters. Many viewers interpret the film as depicting every man as a threat to the protagonist. However, I see it differently. The film explores the trauma and guilt experienced by the main character, causing her to perceive every man as a threat and a nightmare. The concept of a single man embodying all her fears and stereotypes about men is central to the story. As the protagonist witnesses multiple men dying and being reborn repeatedly, she begins to understand that behind all these "idealizations of men" is the ghost of her ex-husband- the true source of her haunting. When she finally makes peace with this realization, she is shown in a state of calm, smiling at her friend. The musical choices in the film further emphasize this journey. The movie begins with a single version of the song, known to be inferior to the duet version with Elton John that concludes the film. This progression underscores her path from isolation and fear to understanding and acceptance.

I felt that all the men Harper came into contact with, represented all of the men who have either assaulted, abused, dismissed and disbelieved (the cop), and condescended to her throughout her life, however the all had the same face of toxic malignant masculinity. Maybe James has a different face because he too has been a victim of oppression but has too been birthed by toxic masculinity.

Thank you for your analysis, but I have to disagree. This film uses symbolism in the same way that someone may wear a Rolex watch or drive an expensive sports car. It's a showy slight of hand in an attempt to attract kudos by association. This analysis does an excellent job of demonstrating why this is the case, as you describe very well the meaning behind these symbols and how they are linked to the mise-en-scene, but the one thing you don't do is give any indication as to why Garland has chosen to use these symbols, what he is attempting to explore or how he wants to challenge the audience's preconceptions. I think the reason you don't do this is due to the fact that when the gilded symbolism is brushed away, there isn't much left beyond banal accusations. 'Men are a bit rubbish sometimes'. 'Religion is a bit rubbish sometimes'. I think that's about as deep as it goes. If I were to state that this film did have any theme, I would have to ascribe the theme that is used countless times in A24 productions, which is the lengths people go to apportion blame for their own crippling inability to deal with the tumult of life.

I think it is a film about misandry. It just veils it with some metaphorical, pretentious, ambiguity. There's two reasons why I see it as trying to justify hatred for men. First the title simply, "Men." As if this film is the definition. Secondly it does nothing to even imply that there was an untrue, delusional or biased perspective at play in the end.

The simplest explanation to me is she had gone mad and it was all in her head, and she then killed an innocent man. I don’t really appreciate film as art, although i know it is. Before filming and shooting starts all the major cast should do full script/movie reenactment (which would also be shot) in 10 minutes: crux/essence of the film, 20-30 mins: character interactions and 1 hour: playing out the major arc of the story, all of it should be done in improvisational way as getting to know the story and characters. Then enactments should serve as a guide not just the script. Also there should be a concept/idea of relative time with respect to filming, unless the story happens in 1 day like a chase, scenes should be shot relative to timeline of the while story so that the characters have time to grow, absorb what's happening, come up with a response keeping everything in mind and not simply reacting like starting points in the story and the actors could also be given hints/direction while waiting for the next shoot and also giving the room for the script to evolve. While shooting the film there should be some days before shooting everyone should mention how they feel as the character and what their characters perspective is, what they think about it, what are their stakes, what the situation/scene means to them/character to everyone involved in the scene. This should be done for major story changes/arcs and big scenes.
