    SPOILER!
I thought it was interesting that the movie was a bit more grounded in reality and didn't get "weird" until after Patterson's character fell from the light house while painting. Perhaps this was his death, and the rest of the movie was him living out purgatory until he was cast out of heaven (the light) and down to hell (the final scene).

PornoMagnum I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen a film gather this many theory’s and pieces put together for those theory’s. I never even thought of this and this is the 90th different one I’ve seen and they all make sense lol
I’ve done a lot of reading and I’ve seen the film twice, there’s no doubt pattinsons character was in purgatory, everything else is perspective

Sorry that purgatory thing makes no sense at all, and on top of that it's pretty boring as a reading, like ok, forget all the psychological elements, jungian constructs, freudian imagery, expressionist presentation, sexual subtext, power dynamics etc. it's just the afterlife that's weird because it's weird

HAAAARK! HARK! Triton, Hark! Bellow, bid our father the sea king rise from the depths, full foul in his fury! Black waves, teeming with salt foam to smother this young mouth with pungent slime. To choke ye! Engorging your organs, til ye turn blue and bloated with bilge and brine and can scream no more. Only when he, crowned in cockle shells, with slithering tentacle tail and steaming beard, take up his fell befitted arm, his coral-tined trident screaming banshee like in the tempest, and plunges right through your gullet. Bursting ye! A bloated bladder no more, but a blasted bloody film now a nothing for the harpies and the souls of dead sailors to pick, and claw, and feed upon, only to be lapped up and swallowed by the infinite waters of the Dread Emperor himself. Forgotten! To any man, to any time, forgotten to any god or devil, forgotten even to the sea. For any stuff or part of Winslow, even any scantling of your soul is Winslow no more, but is now, itself, the sea!

Great analysis. I agree that this film is a masterpiece.
I absolutely adore the final shot in this film as it cemented my belief in a Promethean theme that became real when Pattinson's character reached the top of the lighthouse.
I also drew comparisons to the entire setting as a purgatorial pursuit, where Pattinson has to manage everything that was dealt to him as a test from the divine. He claims all he wants is to save up money and find a nice home and settle down, and at one point Dafoe's character says encouraging statement along the lines of "Keep up the hard hard and you'll be manning your own lighthouse in no time," (which I interpreted as "You'll make it into heaven"). Throughout the story we see him fail with lust, murder, gluttony, etc. And finally at the end of the film he attains fire and thus fails the final test, which then subjects him to the final scene where I believe his liver was eaten by the bird as a form of eternal damnation (Prometheus). That is simply my first impression and I cannot wait to analyze the movie more closely on a second viewing.
Please do make more videos on this film. I would love to hear your analysis on anything from the symbolism to the cinematography or sound design. There is so much to talk about.
You also already taught me about orthochromatic filters and gave me a new appreciation for just how much work went into the cinematography of this film so I must thank you for that.
Keep up the good work. Cheers!

I definitely saw the post-mortem trials of purgatory theme, too.
Also more mythological Greek aspects beyond those regularly mentioned. The boat dropping them off at the beginning as Charon's, bringing the newly deceased across the river Styx to the land of the dead. Shades of Oedipus in the end when the young man kills the old man and takes his place possessing what the elder had been married to and loved most.
So many little bits. Will likely find all sorts which were missed, after further viewings.

To add yet another layer of confusion to this movie, what we see is only from the perspective of Winslow/Howard's addled and drunken mind and isn't necessarily what is actually happening. What is seen isn't necessarily what is to be believed.

    • @ShootMeMovieReviews
      @ShootMeMovieReviews 4 года назад +1

Although there are obvious aesthetic references to the Greek myths I don't think the actual story can be understood in their terms. After all, Howard wasn't stealing any light for the benefit of anybody, but aspiring to achieve salvation by reaching it at all. My own thought is that while we are meant to consider some of the symbolic or metaphoric references and their significance, the events of the story are both unique and independent of those symbols. All of the elements mix to make a satisfying folk tale, but the Greek references are more like icing on the cake than a key to understanding the core of the story.

This is the first legitimate great analysis I've seen. I saw the film in cinemas when it came out and found the simple allegorical analysis of the Triton tale to be quite dull. I was shocked no one tackled the sexual aspect which was obviously important, and thankfully, you did! I'd love to hear your thoughts more in depth on it.

Wow, absolutely fantastic review/analysis, far beyond that of any other video I’ve found on RUclips discussing this movie - discussing the themes and practical parts of the movie and how it contributes to immersion and how it compels the audience in the story of these two men’s delve into madness, and makes the audience question what’s real and if the mystical elements are truly what’s happening to Winslow or simply as a result of his drunken madness and isolation.
This truly is a film that needs to be experienced in the cinema and is, as you said, a genuine, true work of art, one that is testament to Robert Eggers command of telling compelling disturbing period pieces - and a film that certainly doesn’t suggest its only his second film to date.
Apologies for the pretentiousness but I can say with confidence that this is by far my new favourite film of all time with so much to unpack and leaving a great lasting impression on its audience. Great review - you certainly don’t seem like a fake critic to me!

awesome analysis, personally I can go as far as to stay maybe its one of the best films ever made in film history.... in which every element is not only perfect, but also very memorable and extremely powerful. I'll mention my favorite: when Pattison's character runs away from the mermaid, you hear the mermaid scream along with the lighthouse foghorn, in a macabre duet.... what a touch.... Also I dont know if anyone has realized but it sounds like they combined the foghorn sound with an ethereal organ-like drone to give it some 'enchantment' :) ; Personally for me it is details/subtle touches like these that make a movie memorable, and not so much the subject matter....

Great review! To me, there are dozens of readings of the film. Many reviews I have seen simply just explain the plot and symbolism without actually saying what the film does or says about those things. I believe it’s a film about judgement. The light of the LIghthouse looking down in these two somewhat immoral men as they fail to improve themselves together as companions and fall into toxic and immature competition and lust for power, desire, and the truth of the light. It deals with guilt and even generational divides, as well as the divide between master and worker. Eggers seems to suggest that these men go mad and violent against each other because they are too flawed to see the light 100%. In modern society, we fall into in-fighting and toxic masculinity rather than work together for a higher goal.

Just saw it last night and not too sure if I really liked it or hated it. Maybe I need to see it again. The Lighthouse was incredibly atmospheric and contained amazing cinematography. It is definitely open to individual interpretation. The main reason for me wanting to see this movie, was that it contained certain Lovecraftian elements. Like most of Lovecraft’s stories, The Lighthouse is slow moving and a bit confusing. But the premise of people descending into madness is a very Lovecraftian concept. The visualisation of malevolent, unexplained phenomena is used to great effect in this movie. The subtle imagery of tentacled creatures that popped up a couple of times, together with some very weird and loud sound effects made me think of ‘THE OLD ONES’ from ‘THE CTHULU MYTHOS’, which feature so prominently in many of Lovecraft’s stories. Merely to gaze at the blasphemously hideous creatures that are featured in Lovecraft’s stories would lead to insanity or suicide. These were thoughts that were going through my mind as I watched this movie. Anyway, that is my interpretation.

I thought The Witch was probably the best movie of the decade as well, and although The Lighthouse didn't impress me as much at first, I'm increasingly appreciative of how complex it is. The Witch is brilliant in its simplicity, whereas in The Lighthouse, it's very lack of simplicity is maybe it's principle virtue.

@@edwardperez3535 Disagree, anyone can make up their own interpretation. I didn't need to know the exact beats of the story of Prometheus to think that Pattinson went up to the light and was rejected by it, fell down the stairs and then the next shot is his personal hell as envisioned by Dafoe in a scene prior. Sure, it might add to one's enjoyment if you get the reference but it's not necessary. Ignoring the fact that you don't even need to be knowledgable about greek mythology to have come in contact with Promtheus' punishment, since it's referenced constantly in tons and tons of media. It's like with Beethoven's 5th. You might not know it by name but everyone recognizes some of its melodies because of how engrained it is into our culture.
