    Loved the analysis. All really solid good points. In my opinion, the scenes with her children were perfection. That's where she is most at home. They are what keep her going. From an actor's point of view, the chemistry in those scenes made me so emotional. She was so content and happy with them.

      I love the fact that the game night soldier scene was improvised, the director told Kristen, her children co-stars, Jack Nielen (William) and Freddie Spry (Harry) to just play whatever they want, I thought it added a great chemistry between the three actors involved. It seems like Kristen, Jack and Freddie were having so much fun together

    This is my favorite film of the year. I compare Stewart's performance to Heath Ledgers joker as far as immersion and physicality. Seriously, it was spellbinding. Her breathy posh cadence even though she's from LA, her eyes and hand movements, just brilliant.

    "The protagonist haunts the film in the way that she is haunted by the ghost that she can't shake." Yes.

  • @anthonyd8

    I caught this movie without prior knowledge or expectations. Needless to say I was completely floored.
    It's rare to find a movie that so expertly captures its subject using every tool in a filmmaker's toolbelt effectively.
    The way each element blended together into a cohesive narrative that guides the viewer was nothing short of cinematic mastery.
    Couldn't agree more with what you said throughout this analysis, especially with the subtlety and nuance of Kristen Stewart's performance.
    Every piece of dialogue was meaningful and full of brilliant metaphors that made future callbacks immensely satisfying. I would love to hear your thoughts on the screenplay.
    I also want to recommend you see Belfast if you haven't already.
    It's very tonally different compared to Spencer, but it's a passion-filled cinematic experience that covers a lot of ground through an interesting perspective.
    The characters are all very unique, likeable, and full of life. Phenomenal performances all around. Additionally, the blocking/staging along with set design is wonderful.
    Always glad to see you post a video. I frequently leave with a newfound appreciation for media which I already love. It means a lot to me. Please do keep it up.

      One of the things that Kristen S. does so well, imo, are crying scenes. Ones she did in Welcome to the Rileys or Equals where it's not just the character but from inside of herself. They are just too viseral and real not to be feelings deep inside of her. In Spencer it's not just Diana it's about Kristen's inner turmoil.

  • @songbirdy

    • @Cristobels-Green-Boots

      Thank you, Teresa - I’m remembering a scene from ‘Queen Christina’: Garbo is moving silently around a room, gently touching the objects that she will see for the last time, as she is about to be exiled; when asked ‘what are you doing?’ she softly says, “I’m remembering this room” - something about that scene stays with me, years later
      When I saw ‘Personal Shopper’ - which was a revelation - I caught glimpses of that same, studied thoughtfulness, & I have since enjoyed ‘backtracking’, watching Kristen Stewart’ ‘grow into herself’
      - her intelligence is essential to her beauty & she is a joy to watch in closeup

    Good job on this; informative and entertaining. I didn't know about it being 16mm, that explains a lot. I did like the score, but so far my favorite of the year is Antonio Pinto's work for "Nine Days". I'm going to try to catch "Spencer" in the theater again tomorrow. My thoughts, as posted on Twitter after seeing it on November 7th. Not that I have anything too profound to say; I'm an even faker critic ha ha ha!
    SPENCER:
    This is very well-made. Much less of a biopic and more of a psychosomatic tone poem from the perspective of a passionate beneficent woman, trapped by duty and haunted by history. It would make for an interesting double-feature with "The Remains Of The Day", showing that both upstairs and downstairs are doomed to spin out their days within the one small hamster wheel that people expect them to stay in so that the system keeps going.
    Stewart is fantastic, if a bit exhausting to be stuck with for 100 min. But that forced perspective is kind of the point. The other cast is also good, but barely there; you can feel the story editing around them, keeping things firmly entrenched in the perspective of Diana. The Queen has essentially just one line, but sums up the theme of the film so pragmatically that I found it to be utterly devastating. A lean mean Timothy Spall personifies order with a stiff upper lip, battling with the chaotic Sally Hawkins for possession of Diana's soul. It's a beautiful film, bleak and cold, shot through the dust of ghosts, and often from a great distance. We're just not allowed to get close to anyone but the main character and those few she loves and trusts, as she is feeling shunned and isolated by everyone else.
    I liked the score, in particular the atonal moody jazz imbuing the arrival of the Royals with a menacing undertone. And though the ending is tonally satisfying, I do wish they'd concluded with a stark and beautiful image which appears a few minutes BEFORE the actual ending. I wholeheartedly recommend this, as long as you don't mind your Downton Abbey served with a hefty side order of Rosemary's Baby.

  • @heyladyamnesty
    @heyladyamnesty 2 года назад +5

    I think one of the reasons why she can pull off Diana so well is because she naturally moves just like her. Watching Kristian's other performances, certain things have never been a strong suit for her such as the facial expressions she's always given off. It works heavily with Diana as she too moved in the same way - at least publicly. And the direction of the movie gives Diana the respect for what she went through with the isolation she faced. Which most performances never properly show and yet was one of the main unfortunate staples of her life.

  • @Lagrangeify
    @Lagrangeify 2 года назад +5

    She looks just amazing in this film, heart stopping. And it's not Kristen Stewart doing a Diana impersonation so much as shedding her own skin and becoming this achingly beautiful, hopelessly fragile creature that can't thrive in that world, doesn't fit and wouldn't be allowed to. The Diana Spencer being portrayed here mostly only exists in the collective imagination and was fully constructed there in the moment of her demise. That's what's so interesting about this film, everything that we know about her leading up to that tragic moment is captured and distilled in one horror show of a weekend and we are inevitably given cause to consider that this person could never have lived happily ever after.

Charles was unhappy and miserable after being put under immense pressure by The Royals to hurry up and marry a virgin and have children. Then this movie shows what happened when they went through with the wedding. More unhappiness (except Diana with the boys). Good acting, soundtrack, and camerawork.

I was not familiar with this director or cinematographer but I certainly am now! I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this movie. All of the things I can't stand about Kristen Stewart actually played well with the character she was portraying. I think this is her best film ever. I feel like this is a perfect example of that dark cautionary fairytale fable type of movie because they certainly took some creative license here but it was done so creatively that I didn't mind. Feel the Royals seen there chance to get rid of Diana. When they had her breaks cut caused the car accident & once at hospital they said she only had a Broken arm, then Diana was pronounced dead.... So I’d say they had Diana murdered Bc she was bringing to much attention to her self & Royals was getting none.... But then they act like they hate it🙄 They called Diana crazy, but clearly they are the f-ked up bunch, they don’t want attention, someone comes along & gets a lot of attention, & they all of a sudden can’t stand Diana & the attention she was getting, they wanted some, it actually got a few Royals off there A-es & down off there high horse & they started doing charity work, or world hunger etc. what ever that stuff is called.... But they steal couldn’t compete with Diana....♥️ The worlds chosen princess 👸🏼 Diana Spencer
