Recording a Pixar-Inspired Folk Waltz On Cassette // Tascam 688
The music was inspired by European waltzes, Pixar music, and robotic rhythms (I nearly called it "KrautWaltz"). linktr.ee/sleepingorchard
The lyrics are a poem I wrote at work, with a chorus added. I used my analog drum machine as the rhythm section, directly into the cassette recorder and then recorded guitars and vocals on top, using a Shure SM58 and my WEM Copicat tape echo alongside one of the lead vocals. I would have added more, I would have used different instruments...But I have what I have and that's all I can use for now until the next "Marketplace" outing.

I’m the captain of a ship in a world of just dry land.

My Shure SM58 appreciation continues. Alt-folk meets Soft-rock. Stream/Download here: sleepingorchard.bandcamp.com/track/1979 & open.spotify.com/album/66XmYeBASo5Ivn1jxuxIwU?si=dcLwPSv-RMWzUWgLPeblVQ I'm still really enjoying my simple recording process on the Tascam 688 cassette recorder. New found love for the Shure SM58. I never intended to upload this video but recently we lost our beautiful little cat Carlisle, and seeing him in the background of this video made me want to share it. He always used to sit in on recording sessions and lay down on all the equipment, especially after the tape machine warmed up. He was so peaceful and calm, so laid-back and curious. He'd go on walks with us and you could feel his ...

Loved this video, loved the song even more.i might have to make Spotify just to listen as I couldn't find it on RUclips a sec ago. I could of fluffed that tho. What you said about not having too much to play around with when recording. That really resonated as I need to start somewhere with recording my music. And I think that will help to keep it simple and fun. Is there something similar I could use that's like the same thing you're using? Als may that bass rip, but it sounds so good without it wow. Magic moment
What cassettes do you use?
Is this traditional?
Only the words derived from the original poem but it sounds far from traditional musically. Might delete.
Amazing! Nice song!! ❤❤
Thank you so much 😊
@@SleepingOrchardOf course! Are all the songs (or most) uploaded to SoundCloud, as you’ve mentioned before?
@ there’s actually not that many on Soundcloud, I keep forgetting about it haha. Most are on Spotify and streaming places, or BandCamp. Thanks for reminding me I need to add the others to Soundcloud! Hahaha
Very inspiring! I have a TOA 8-track cassette deck and I've only done one project with it so far. I love how simple but rich this ended up.
Thank you! Are you happy with the project you did with it? I sometimes like what I do, sometimes hate it 😂. Really happy you liked the result of this one, thank you for watching!
@@SleepingOrchard Happy enough! I had to pull it up to refresh my memory. I'd been wanting to put together a retro tech RUclips channel forever and I wanted to create a background music loop I could chop up and put behind certain sequences. It's just a two chord loop that I improvise and expand on for 5 minutes. I've still never made the channel, but when my friend asked me if I had anything he could use as hold music for business, that's what he's currently using. It does sound like hold music. 😅
One more fun tidbit is that since I didn't have any outboard FX, I decided to record it into the computer for FX and light editing, and then I recorded it (still multitrack) back to tape to give it even more saturation. I can't remember if I did the stereo mix on the unit itself or if I recorded the tracks back into the computer to mix and bounce but if I did it was just to set the levels and I tried not to touch much else.
Damn ❤
What chords are these brother? I'd like to play along :)
Omg this song is so folksy Beatles feeling. It is so catchy and waltzy. So lucky U are on Spotify
The commentary is super funny 😅😅😊😊
Thank you! And thank you for finding on Spotify too 😃 that’s a really big compliment, thank you so much! And haha yes the commentary can be a bit unserious lol
Beautiful song man
This sounds like “Holes” ? I’ve picked it up as new release on Amazon music … I made a video for “Holes” that about 5 months ago thought how cool it was Mr O 🔥 🔥
@@deecyful well spotted! Yesss it is. 5 months, wow 😳 I do take a while to finish things haha. I’m trying to get much faster! Thank you 🙏 😌
😮😅😂😂 have a great weekend Will 🥰
That sound of "Any colour you like" 😉
@@1000andres1000 just nowhere near as good! 😂 can never come close to Gilmour
Short buy sweet … Love it ❤
@@deecyful thank you! And as you may know now the full song is so so so long 🤦🏼♂️ 😂
5 mins 17 seconds … YES 🙌 😮😂😂 phew I did my revision 🎉
Cool and reminiscent of the solo on a World Party solo, maybe Is It Too Late or Rescue Me.
@@electrosonicnebula Thank you, I will listen to them! Always interested to hear 😃
@@SleepingOrchard You might find them interesting, they were influenced by the Who, Bob Dylan and The Stones and with a definite sixties groove. Also influenced by Prince, they somehow worked it all in.
Hey how you doing Mr O … had to re watch this just cus I can 😅😁😁😁🙌🎶🎶🥰
@@deecyful always more than happy to have you stop by my corner of the internet 😃🙏 I should have put the kettle on 😂 I’m okay and hope you are too!
Hi Will put the kettle on 😊 Glad you’re okay 👍 No sign of you on TT 😮as was putting last touch’s to my Halloween video which has you on it .. your music is still working though. Just wanted to see you are okay and you are 👍 😎 and yes I’m okay 👍 see ya soon .. green tea for me 🍵
@ ahhh I will miss it, I deactivated my TikTok account. Maybe not forever but I was finding the app declined quite a bit cus of just…adverts and then videos of people selling other things haha. It was also MANIC, so quick and jittery. I prefer the slow world of RUclips and Instagram for a bit haha. I will get all the green teas on standby!
Finally got a youtube account! lol I love yr videos so much. It inspires so many ideas for my endless tape adventures.
Yessss!!! Good to see you here! I hope you can have many adventures! I love your style, so can’t wait to see 😃
My god,. That guitar through the tape echo was absolutely heavenly. I could listen to just that all day by itself.
Thank you! I was happy with the result of that, didn’t expect it! 😂
it sounds like swans and the swimming by iron and wine , thanks for another video it was pleasure to watch
Thanks for watching! Just checked out that Iron and Wine track, really like it. I can hear the similar chorus chords, especially that descending folky bit haha.
Really love the final song, and so glad RUclips sent me your way! I've been wanting to get into drum machines and cassette recording!
Thank you!! Really happy RUclips bought you here 🙏 😌. And yessss, drum machines + tape is a decision I will always support. I hope you can get into that. I’m working on more with the drum machine at the moment.
My favourite
Thank you! 🤩
It almost brought tears to my eyes. It's so beautiful
That’s lovely to know, thank you so much ☺️ 🙏
man.... I like daws, I think it's awesome that music creation/production is much more accessible now than it ever was, but it's so sad that just because digital is 'easier' and 'more efficient', analog machines like that are just... not being made anymore. like that's some bullshit(pardon my language). It's bullshit that we live in a world where such tasteful mediums and tools for art, with irreplacable charm, are just fading away from existence because they just don't make enough numbers for companies to care. there are always some things that newer tech can never emulate in older tech, but unfortunately the economy doesn't care about any of that as long as it's not making enough money. sorry for the rant. I'm glad pleople like you are still around, maintaining these old machines and using them, respecting their legacy.
Rant approved! 😃 I agree it’s sad that this stuff isn’t still being made, but THANKFULLY they made them so well in the past that they still work today. I’m sad at how the price has gone so high now though. When I got this machine it was really cheap by comparison. Thank you for appreciating it and my attempts to make art 🙏😌. It’s a strange thing, efficiency, because I finish my tape machine songs WAY FASTER than my digital recordings, maybe because there’s less options? Or maybe because at some point you just have to call it a day to move on with a new track haha. Having said that, I have tapes from years ago I never finished…so maybe I’m talking rubbish right now 😂 😂
Very brown
This is what I search for. In a world of technological overlords..this makes me feel more human.
Thank you! That makes me so happy cus I definitely feel “digital exhaustion” from having to download an app every five minutes and creating an account for something as benign as parking the car at a public car park 😣. I want tangible things back! Without having to sign in and reset all the passwords I forget constantly haha
@SleepingOrchard wow ain't that the truth. I use so much technology in my music production because that's what I was taught but I never realized the world of tapes I thought it was just old garbage gear from yesterday year, but this is definitely a good secret for richness and uniqueness
It's about skill, not gear - as you have demonstrated. Nice one.
Thank you, that’s very kind of you to say 😌
the song and performance is great!!!
Thank you so much! 😌 🙌
Sounds great, man.
Thanks so much! 😃
You have a great voice! This song and your style reminds me of Olly Knights, and I do mean that as a compliment.
Thank you! It’s nice to know it sounds better to others than it does in my head 😂 I will check out his stuff! Not heard him before
@@SleepingOrchard Check out the 2012 album "If not now when".
I have heard that a Ukulele Bass sounds good, and they are cheaper than a regular electric bass
Oh you’re right! I heard one at a local folk show and it sounded AMAZING. I was shocked. I think this might be the next step then 🤔 Thanks for watching 🙏
I can help get your bass running again! I was a tech for a long time. I only wish you could send it, but international is 😬
Haha that grimace emoji is my exact face when looking up international shipping costs 😂. In a perfect world I would come to you for repairs haha
RIP Carl, lovely tune!
Thank you, Carl is making mischief and endlessly exploring cat heaven right now haha.
Sounds fantastic🥂
Thank you very much! Cheers 🥂
I haven’t hit play yet and I’m already in!🙂🥂✌🏾
Haha I hope it didn’t disappoint! I appreciate your pre-watching faith in it though! 😂
this sounds really nice - reminds me of Jeff Tweedy solo stuff (well, solo with son)
Thank you! I will have to listen to the stuff with his son 😃 Always grateful to find new music to listen to.
Beautiful mate 👏
Thank you buddy! 😃
bro you're don henley in my book.
That’s very kind, I might be able to one day match his beard at least…but otherwise not until they invent plastic surgery for vocal chords 💭 😝
this is brilliant
I appreciate it, thanks for watching 🙏
Great work!
Thank you! 🤩
Great lyrics and music and the vibe is superb.
Thanks a lot! Really happy you liked the lyrics 🙏😃
My cameo made this a hit I’m sure, it can’t be the hard work you’ve put into this.
Definitely was, tied the whole thing together. Before that it was just a confusing, unwatchable mess!
Ill get involved more often
Appreciated
🫡 Thanks!
i could play piano for you man
That would be cool! I’ll check out Your playing 😃!
great video, i found the faded visuals a little hard to parse on this one while watching in a brighter environment.
Thanks! And yes I think I overdid it, and it’s also very dark. But I’ll learn from it hopefully 😂 Better next time
@@SleepingOrchard cheers
Would like to tell you that you are someone, even if your impact never will be spread across the world or be considered a great accomplishment by society doesn’t mean that the people you touch won’t appreciate it. I love this video cause it shows how to create art, going with the flow and trying even though we aren’t the best at everything. To me this is a valuable piece of art, both the video and the song. This saying goes to everyone who reads it. You are special and you are great, even though you might never finish a song or use correct color theory when painting. Life is about existing and living because you can. Society might want to push individuality and love for the self down, the best way to work against it is to just let yourself be. Sorry if none of this made sense or my grammar is wrong, I am tired af and I don’t speak English as my first language. (My English test came back a c+ and I am a tad bit upset about it)
It all made perfect sense! Thank you, it’s a beautiful comment and makes putting this stuff out all the more worth it. Thank you for your kind and inspiring words 🙏
@@SleepingOrchard I just wanted you to know that you matter
You are sleeping orchard and one day that will be amazing to people who wish they were here.
🙏 That’s beautiful, made me emotional, thank you!!
I dont know why the like button isnt working... maybe i brokw it pressing too hard. Great video!
Hahaha I’m not sure RUclips is prepared for that level of enthusiasm 😂 Thanks so much, my East Anglian friend!
Bro, first time I’ve seen one of you videos, immediately subscribed. Love your style
Thank you! Welcome aboard 😃 I really appreciate that
Hi, I like the song and can definitely save your bass - because it's only "dead" after the circular saw! Look - I'm a miracle worker for musical instruments! And it's not far either: only halfway around the planet - I'm based in Saxony. Please get in touch, see you then & best wishes from Saxony, Matze
Haha not TOO far away, being in East Anglia myself, a Saxon region of England. Maybe we’re distantly related 🤔😂
@@SleepingOrchard East Saxony = Essex! Well, if that's the case, we're DEFENITELY related! (My gang were just too lazy to move back then, you know.) And the world is SOOO small, isn't it... Why not come by for tea and we can discuss further details. So which tea should I prepare: earl grey or Guinness... or even Edradour? (You can of course also send the bass corpse by mail. It would be an honor for me in any case.) CU, Matze
@@SleepingOrchard By the way, I was a founding member of the Beatles (if that helps at all)... even if only in my mind. A glaring disadvantage of being born much too late, so to speak.
What's the name of the machine?
The drum machine is an MFB-301 and the cassette recorder is a Tascam 688.
Thanks mate
Stop everything!! Sleeping Orchard posted a new video!!! 🎉
Awww shucks 🥰🥰🥰
That was another amazing one, lyrics are masterful, and will buy the track from Bandcamp as I did the others. The almost muffled voice sound you get here is familiar, maybe from the Beatles. The sixties vibe is on another level, so needed right now, I love how it inspires successive generation of musicians. I guess that bass needs a little soldering.
@@electrosonicnebula Thank you! Really happy that you enjoyed the lyrics and vocal sound. I think it’s the boosted mid-range and lack of bass/treble that give it that retro feel. But yes that whole era is a massive influence and it’s nice you can notice it! 😃 I will need to check some bass input soldering tutorials then haha, thank you 🙏
