  • Join me as I finish off some cassette recordings that I've been far to slow to complete. A link to all things here - linktr.ee/Slee...
    I filmed the mixing process for a garage rock song that I recorded fully on the Tascam 688 Portastudio cassette recorder. The next stage will be to add effects which I may do a video on too cus it's a kinda cool process.

    We had this machine in 1994, £2000 if I recall. We used a stereo reel to reel in conjunction to bounce back in multi layers of vocal harmonies, guitar comps and a huge drumset. Reckon all in all around 32 tracks. With new tech you aren't forced to get creative..

      That sounds like a fun and possibly challenging process! And to get the equivalent of 32 tracks on a cassette is impressive!!
      I’d love to get another machine for cross bouncing, and some better outboard gear in general, still saving up!

    This sounds amazing dude, and what a great video too. Love all the close up shots of the eq settings, diagrams etc. Looking forward to the next one….

      Thanks man! I’m glad you found the extra editing effort worth it 😆 Longest I’ve ever spent on a video. Doing the subtitles killed me 😅

    Wow, to my ears the sound quality is fantastic. I had the 4 track version and always thought the bass wasn't enough. Maybe my speakers were crappy. Did you use some kind of noise supression?

    • @SleepingOrchard
      @SleepingOrchard  4 дня назад

      @@Bgt3 Thanks! Hmm it could have been the speakers or just an unlucky fault in your model, the bass response is actually surprisingly huge (although the high end does roll off a lot - but I like that less harsh sound actually). The machine has an in-built noise reduction, but no noise suppression was used outside of the tape machine.

    Its a delight, this inside look of your finetuning! (for not understanding the tech 🤔 its very entertaining to listen and think over the techchanges you make! 🤗
    The way you film, expresses and suits 'the artist' you already are.
    Thanks you for sharing!

      It does! No idea what it’s doing, the manual is vague (and I only skim read it lol) but I’d love to know why I prefer it to others 🤔

    I really like the drum sound! Is that just a room mic?

    • @SleepingOrchard
      @SleepingOrchard  Год назад +1

      Thanks man! I honestly can’t remember if it’s an overhead mic plus an SM58 mic on the kick, or if it’s just an overhead mic. But it’s a small mic setup for sure!

    How are you accurately monitoring the tones and tracks? Headphones that you know well?

    • @SleepingOrchard
      @SleepingOrchard  8 месяцев назад

      Yes, exactly that! I much prefer mixing on monitors, but that bleeds too much into the voiceover mic. Studio headphones is a nice compromise. Thanks for watching 😃

    ¿Can i use a analog mixer in the aux in from the tape recorder, and use it to mix the tracks sounds?

    • @SleepingOrchard
      @SleepingOrchard  8 месяцев назад +1

      It’s got 8 outputs that you can individually send to an external mixer to mix. I like to do that when I have more space 😆. Sorry for late reply, been combing through for comments I’ve missed.

    So I just received one of these that was unfortunately not packed well. Most of the functions seem to work as advertised except for a major one- I can't seem to get the thing to record anything to tape? The meters are working, I get sound in the head phones, monitors, etc. The tape runs, FF, rewinds, all of those functions, etc. However, when I go to play back what I supposedly recorded nothing? I followed the manual, pages 18-19, word for word and still nothing? I even tested my new cassette tapes just to make sure those weren't bad, but that wasn't it? I'm at a loss and may need to return the item? But I thought that I would try these 688 comment sections first, just in case I was totally missing/not trying something, etc. Anyone on here who may have some words of wisdom, know these units well, and might know what is going on, I would sure appreciate it- Thanks.

      I’ll try and fix that if I load this cassette back up one day
