Jennifer is taking this one on... but she is running out of time! Will a hard deadline of one week finally help her make it all the through? Or will 2024 end before she crosses the finish line with this book? We'll find out.... St. Augustine, pray for us!

Epic End Of Summer Book Hauls! Fresh Finds For Our Favorite Shelves (LFL & More!) 2024
So many great ideas! I had a moment of inspiration while watching-I keep trying and failing to keep a record of how I’m doing spiritually, in order to make my confessions more thorough and fruitful. Using a calendar for brief notes each day sounds doable to me. Thank you!
That is a brilliant idea, Annie! We may also have to use one of our calendars for that. Thanks for sharing!
I would have made reading that book a New Year’s resolution for 2025.. take 2! 🎬 😅☺️✨
Whew- that was plan B for me, and I almost had to put it into action!
Well done Jennifer, you're an inspiration for all of us 🙏🏻
Thank you! Just skip the part, though, about all my failed attempts, lol. I hope everyone makes it through on the first try :)
Well done you! Way to finish the year on a high note.😊
Thank you! I truly am glad that I finally made it through :)
Thank you for some great prayer ideas! When I can't sleep, I will say the Rosary & many times I fall asleep while saying it.
You are so welcome! The rosary is helpful for so many things… such a beautiful prayer and gift
Well done! Thanks for sharing your tips. I don't know if I could ever do an audio book; my mind wanders easily & I'm sure I'd have to start over. I appreciate you being here for me !
My mind also wanders, Lena . . . and I'm afraid that someday it will wander too far and won't find its way back!😅
@MargaretUIUC Oh lol! I just get distracted too easily
You and Margaret are cracking us up, Lean. God bless you both!
I love all these ideas! Maybe each month I’ll try a different idea! Thank you for sharing!
You are very welcome! We will also be trying one idea a month for 2025… excited to do this!
Good job slogging through!! Audiobooks can be a life saver!
Amen! It made all the difference for me
I like your commitment to this challenge!
Thank you! After all my failed attempts, I really wanted to make this a go
Wow, I loved hearing about your struggles reading this book! I’m so happy you found an audio version. I was going to suggest that. I just heard Jimmy Akin speak about how he cannot read books. He loves listening to audio versions or podcast. ❤ I’m so happy I found your channel. 🎉
We're so glad you found us! I think I must have listened to the same podcast as you did with Jimmy Akin. He was discussing his dyslexia and different ways he's worked around that? He is always so interesting!
Congrats, so proud of you🎉🎉 Loved the "crime never pays" remark😂 I have both St. Augustine's Confessions & The City of God & I want to read them really badly. Maybe that'll be one of my 2025 goals! Thanks for the inspiration 🎉
Having it on paper as a goal was highly motivating for me- lol, I felt I was going to let Kate down, also, if I failed in this attempt. Having that deadline really helped :)
I'm reading The City of God! 😊
@vesnastihovic7014 How is it? I have it & it's on my TBR list.
That one may be next for me… but maybe in a couple of years, lol. Are you enjoying it?
@catholicmomanddaughter It's good but little bit overwhelming. Augustine's discontent with himself and his understanding of the world and the purpose of life continued throughout his twenties, while he remained an adherent of the Manichees. He later looked back with some self-discussed on the idea he once held that he could give it to fleshy pleasures and subsequently atone by taking food to the holy elect, who would transmute matter to spirit as they digested it and bring into being spiritual forces for good. Augustine did not immediately break down his connections with the Manichees, for he did not know where else to turn to find a better religious and philosophical system, but in some disturbance of spirit he found that he was disillusioned. And even after he has ceased altogether to be a Manichee and become a Christian, the Manichee bundle of the beliefs included ideas which stayed with Augustine for a long time. One was that the material world was evil and the world of the spirit good. Even after he had accepted that the omnipotent Christian God was the creator of matter as well as spirit, Augustine continued to believe that, as a matter of common experience, the body and soul were at war in each individual. He came to the conclusion that God pedestines those he saves for heaven. In the city of God, membership, Augustine concluded, must consist only of those God had chosen to be its citizens.
"Crime doesn't pay." haha, that got me laughing. 😄. Congrats! You analyzed the situation, made adjustments as needed and you did it! A good lesson for all of life's challenges I think. And thank you for the tips - will keep them in mind when I am brave enough to begin reading!
Lol- I was fairly bummed when I realized that I had to go back and start again on normal speed, but in the end it was worth it! Let me know if you give it a try :)
Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉 ! 😊
Thank you so much 😀
I would love to read this! Thanks for your great tips!! Audio version and rewatch Restless Heart ❤️ And congrats 😀
Thank you! It took me- ahem- awhile, though, to finally get through it! Let me know if you tackle it :)
I'm impressed . . . and a little jealous that you made it through the Confessions and I still haven't. I may have to try the audio book. I am no philosopher, nor am I a theologian. I love Godsplaining because I love the banter among the friars, but I confess that my eyes glaze over when they settle down to the subject at hand if it involves (as it usually does) deep, philosophical thinking. Maybe that's why I haven't made it through the Confessions yet. St. Augustine, pray for me!
Well, lol, Margaret- don't be too impressed since it only took me upteen tries. I so very much wish Fr. Joe Roesch of the Marian Fathers would take on the Confessions. I did St. Faustina's Diary and Imitation of Christ with him, and he just has a beautiful way of explaining things. Maybe I will email him and ask… couldn't hurt!
Have you ever struggled to get through a spiritual classic?
Augustine encountered a line of thought which had an immense influence on his ideas regarding the important question of how far human beings could work out their own salvation and how far they are dependent on God to help them by the intervention of his grace. It also encouraged him to think about predestination and to come to the conclusion that God pedestines those he saves for heaven. These were significant issues for the city of God, whose membership, Augustine concluded, must consist only of those God had chosen to be its citizens.
I started Screwtape Letters over and over again but couldn’t get very far. This summer there was a book study on it at my parish and I finally read it all the way through. Being part of a study group definitely helped. I love your strategy of the audio book. Congrats!
Look at that old Barnes & Noble hardcover - wonderful to see it again! But honestly, I don't know how anybody could STOP reading the Confessions. I love it so much.
I can see how you would love it… there is so much there to ponder, and you could keep rereading it and learn something new every time :)
Bravo...you did it...good girl 😁👍...Have a wonderful day!!!
Thank you! It was a long time coming :)
Clever clever clever! I'm feeling so inspired! I work in a Gr.4 Catholic School classroom, I also co-run a pre-teen girls group at school, these ideas could be applied with the students in so many ways. We study a virtue each month and a corresponding Saint that exemplifies that virtue. I'm thinking reflection, daily prayer leader log, goal setting journal. For my girls the physical calendar would make beautiful gift boxes to share the cookies we bake and share each year. We prayed for the Holy Souls in November, so we could log those. Thank you kindly for sharing this!Bless you!
What fun for your girls! You will have to keep us updated on how it all works out :)
I’m reading “Turned Around” by Peter Kwasniewski this Advent. Glad I stumbled upon your channel.. Delightful!
We're so glad to hear you are enjoying our videos :) Thanks for sharing your reading with us- have a blessed Advent!
Greetings , doing great work. We need these kind of books to teach catholic catechism to our kids. Would you like to share to us ?
We would love to see more books like this one!
Using creative minds for God's glory ! Awesome 🎉
Thank you for the kind words- we appreciate them!
I appreciate your explanation. I look forward to getting a rose from St Therese!
You are very welcome! St. Therese, pray for us!
These are such good ideas! You should do one for Christmas cards ❤
Great idea!! We do have a few ways we like to repurpose Christmas cards. Hmm...
Thanks for sharing these ideas. I have the opposite & just wish that I could have a catholic calendar. I love them, especially with the saints dayson there. I appreciate you immensely !
It is nice to have all the feast days laid out. Does your church not usually give them out?
@catholicmomanddaughter No, our church does not give out calendars. Once I received one from our diocese.
Wonderful ideas...Thank you Ladies...Have a blessed day!!!🙏
You are welcome, Elizabeth… have a blessed Advent!
I donate them to Catholic Nursing Home where elderly residents reside.
Another great idea :)
You have so many ideas, but I only have the Catholic Calendar from church. Sadly I don't get these like you do I love a lot of your ideas (The Novena, the Rosary prayers, the Mary and Martha) I'm going to need to find more Catholic Calendars for the coming year Thank you and God Bless!
If you ask around at church you will hopefully find someone who has extras to share. Also- you are the winner of our latest give away! (Advent book about the shepherds). We sent a message to you, but it may have gone to your spam folder. If you will send us your address (send to catholicmomanddaughter@gmail.com) we'll put it in the mail for you :)
I didn't know that there were catholic stickers. 😊 I am going to try the different titles of Mary ( I think there are117).
I didn't know there were 117 different titles for Mary? I learned some else new today Thank you
We're going with the one idea a month plan and hope to do at least one month for Mary also. Maybe we will write down 2 each day since there are so many :) 117! That is awesome!
I thank you. You have a truly worthy channel. I simply want to say that until I retired, I was an active volunteer for the good Sisters of Mother Teresa for twenty-six years. Sister Superior had me utilizing Blessed Salt. I recited the prayer to Saint Michael as I sprinkled the Sacramental through the dormitory where I spent nights with homeless men. Over the years, there was never a problem associated with the homeless. Rather, there was always a sense of calm and restful sleep. Once again, I thank you for all that you share on your channel. May Almighty and ever-loving God richly Bless you and keep you, through Jesus and Mary.
How do we get them in the mail!? I feel bad taking more than one from our church, but I think my kids would like some in their rooms as well
We didn't mention it in the video, but we were thinking that it would be great fun to give kids a calendar and let them run with it. We get many in the mail from places we have donated to (Catholic Answers, etc). Also, Jennifer usually gets a couple from church for being a catechist (usually these are the planner type). You could ask at church if anyone has any extras or even ask around your neighborhood (if your neighborhood has a social media page, you could ask there… often people are more than happy to give extras away). Also- you could use last year's calendar for things like a sticker journal, etc. These are not date sensitive, so an old calendar or planner would work :)
You guys are genius! Power duo!
Thank you! We're so glad you enjoyed the video :)
