👍👍👍
BRAVO sir! Appreciate your clarification on these basic notation and chord entry procedures. Well Don3
Thank you for watching and enjoying! This was one of the first videos I made and I bet you would enjoy my new ones with some useful tips!
Super helpful video. I've been using Dorico for a long time, but never took the time to really learn shortcuts.
I believe shortcuts and Dorico are synonymous! My workflow is so fast because I either know the key command or map it to my midi keyboard buttons. Thank you for watching and I am glad I could help you out!
It's so much fun watching this take shape and seeing your process. Educational content should all bring this much joy.
You remind me how lucky I am to have studied music and do what I love for a living! Learning and creating music is the ultimate source of joy I think anyone can experience.
This is so depressing. Coming to Dorico from Finale and this is so long winded to do a bunch of stuff that's super fast in Finale. The fact that you're forced to downstem the notes to avoid collision with the rhythmic cue is disheartening as they should be upstemed but Dorico isn't equipped to handle it. Even the rhythmic bar seems like a bear to get under control. I used to do those super fast in Finale. Just have an empty bar. Do your slashes and everything, then just reduce the size of the entire staff to like 70%, and then use the "invisible staff" staff style to make the staff disappear but leave the rhythm slashes. You can just drag the staff above the staff you need the rhythmic slashes on. Not only is this fast because you can work on the rhythmic hits like any other staff, but it allows you to keep the 8th notes in the melody upstemmed. I kept hearing how Dorico was the future and so far ahead and I think we're all learning (as Dorico was never seriously compared to Finale) that Dorico is actually much further behind Finale than anyone ever realized and almost everything is just harder to do, more cumbersome, and not as elegant looking as it is in Finale. Sigh.....
I get your frustration, I have a hard time understanding as someone who dumped finale for Sibelius years ago due to workflow differences. I go very slow in this video to explain conceptual concepts, about why slash regions exist and not purely how to use them so the long "windedness" is way more on the instructional side versus the functionality side and that is just at the preference of my audience. My audience even values this pace so much many of them have taken a few lessons with me for a more traditional learning format. As I mentioned at the end of the video this type of work in Dorico only takes me a few minutes but with all the new users I felt it was important to explain the differences and not just make a list of to dos which would have been a 5 minute video. Now, you have one extremely good point that everyone should be vocal about, and that's the up stems with rhythmic cues (in the version I used in this video) was a bug. It is suppose to be fixed and you can still do the up stems but just adjusting the stem length in engrave, either way unacceptable in my opinion but the growing user base will only make these sorts of bugs get caught faster. Overall, if Dorico is not for you, use Sibelius. I have made some wonderful looking scores and enjoy working in Sibelius and the workflow is very similar to Finale. There are plenty of great channels with Sibelius content that I watch so you would be in very good hands if that is the route. Also, I have done a handful of scores in musescore by request of who hired me and it's honestly super powerful and for lead sheet work it's honestly great (and free). Final thoughts, if you want to see Dorico used in a professional setting and not a lecture setting (if only my videos were lectures haha) catch a livestream when I am arranging a big band and I think you may see why Dorico is Dorico and how fast it can go especially for rhythm section specifically. Either way I appreciate you watching my video and keeping the discussions going. It was new finale converts that had good things to say that brought speedy entry to Dorico and the community is important!
Automatic cue generation??? The future really is today
I know right! My big band writing has never been faster. Thanks for watching!
Pls I need cubase 14 installation software... How can I get it?
o.steinberg.net/en/support/content_and_accessories/steinberg_download_assistant.html This takes you to the download assistant page, click the download for either Mac and windows, install it and sign in with your account! If you were trying to start a trial and needed an account, going to the cubase page should let you do that as well. Thank you for watching!
That last one is really useful when making a handbell chart in its own flow (which is itself a pain in the butt, but hopefully will get a native solution eventually).
Dang, missed it. Good work though!
I'll be streaming again working on this piece, excited to see you during the next one!
Dude, you are putting out really good content. I’m happy for you that it’s getting more attention and subscribers for you. Keep going!
Thank you! It's honestly moving so quickly and I am trying to keep up and improve every video. I am planning a pretty cool video about my recording process next. Thanks for your support!
Excellent quick overview .... many thanks!
Thank you for watching, I am planning much more content like this for both Dorico and Cubase you may enjoy!
@@cjrhenmusic. good news, I look forward to that. Anything regarding Nuendo also welcome!
can you switch off that annoying back-ground music, please! otherwise: good!
Yes actually I've learned my lesson haha
First vid I've seen to highlight this kind of workflow comparison/integration with Dorico and the new score editor in C14, built on Dorico engine tech - really good, thanks.! Just a niggle or two; at 8:23 you keep saying GALLERY view instead of GALLEY.... The Chapter heading is right though... ;-) Also, the music bed under the narration becomes a bit intrusive around 11:12 Hide Signposts onwards, in and out with those top brass lines etc..! something to watch out for...
Soooo, another comment told me I have been calling it gallery view, and I realized I have been calling it that for 4 years. 4. Years. Why, because I am blind and thought there was an r haha. And I appreciate the comment about the background music, tbh I am just so new to making videos (2 months) and just started adding bkg music a few weeks ago. I am still getting the hang of it and appreciate your feedback! But yeah I was super excited for this feature to get added and can't wait for it to get more notation options and some improvement, first step in a good direction. Thank you for the very kind constructive criticism and I hope to see you in the next video! You are my first comment since I just hit 1k subscribers so thank you for your support!
@@cjrhenmusic Hey, no worries.! Glad to be of help... ;-) Absolutely ace how you describe what your doing/showing, and all the editing etc... so keep all that up..! Will definitely be tuning in some more.👍💪😎 Diving into some of your composition stuff soon too...
This has come a long, long way from Tiger Cub (by Emile Tobenfeld) on an Atari computer 🤣
I wish I could experience all of that on original hardware, I was seriously considering making videos where I try to use old software and PC's for music work as a young guy who started high school with Cubase 9.5! Might be entertaining to watch me struggle, what do you think?
Steinberg 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The trim note function in the new score editor seems to be very useful, but missing in Dorico. Maybe I’m wrong, but that could be a great addition to Dorico? Nice video by the way, thanks.
In Dorico we use the key commands which I covered in a video to manipulate notes. Basically a faster way of manipulating the score that I am working on a practice method for! Thank you!
I've looked & can't find. Do you know if there is a "crossgrade" deal from Dorico to Cubase?
Hey there is no Crossgrade from Dorico to Cubase because they aren't competing products. That said it would be cool if they offered a deal!
Galley view! (Not gallery.) The term comes from publishing. In the days of hand-set letterpress printing around the 1650s, the printer would set the page into "galleys", long metal trays into which type was laid, ideal for proofreading before being set into book form.
You have blown my mind. I have called that view gallery view for years. I will fix that lol
Cubase is the BEST !!!!!!
I've been using it 9.5, Cubase rocks!
I like to use Dorico as my Main Composing tool in combination with Noteperformer AI for Instrumental Simulation, i use it in sync with Cubase 14 Pro. I use TLX Timecode vst to send mtc to Cubase, so i can simulate instrumental Instruments and add addional Synths and vocals in Cubase and have all in sync. Highly recommend.
That sounds like an awesome setup! I'm going to try it out this week, I am curious if having a different workflow like that will affect my writing. Thank you for the cool info and for watching!
Thank you for the info. I'm considering trying this to sync dorico and Cubase the same way
@@ChizFreak you can find help for TLX timecode and the overall workflow in the official Dorico forum. I also recommend a real 40 buck midi interface. The u6 midi pro from cme it has a latency of less than 1 ms. It’s important, because loop midi or other software solutions get latency peaks on big orchestra setups. In u6 midi pro you can plug a midi cable from port 1 to port 1 in and have a transmission loop, so you can send midi from Dorico to Cubase for example for the timecode. Or for key based instruments such as a piano. When you on windows you should think about vb-matrix a software where you can connect up to 128 virtual audio channels.. So you can send the Dorico Noteperformer output to Cubase. Last but not least. When you have signature or tempo changes, you need to export the tempo track in Dorico and import it to Cubase in order to sync both with tlx timecode, because Dorico cannot export or generate external MIDI Clock signals according to the developers. So import the timecode track to Cubase first then send the tlx timecode from Dorico and set Cubase as slave follower.
I’m really intrigued as to when they are going to make the Dorico INTO Cubase experience available. My life will change dramatically then.
I bet it will happen after the Nuendo release and be pretty bare ones early next year like late January or early February. Based on the release notes it seems like the new score editor will continually gain features. I'm very excited for it! Thanks for watching!
Useful tips, thanks. As a newcomer to Dorico my tip would be to print off a copy of the Dorico Quick Reference Card (2 X A4) as it lists loads of shortcut keys and I always have it handy when I'm inputting. I printed it back to back and laminated it. As users of Dorico probably work with audio equipment of one sort or another, we are likely to notice the audio quality on videos like this. I felt that the audio quality did not quite match the content. It sounded like you were very close to the mic (muffled), EQ needed attention, the level was too low and the chirping background 'music' was an added distraction. I would get some advice from a sound engineer on that one.
I'm working on the mix for videos and just switched my mics and preamps so it is a little dark but I rush to stick to a release schedule as output is the focus right now, I am professional mix master engineer for jazz music awarded in the student downbeat awards last year, and that is to say simply put, I'm better at music mixing than dealing with podcast style audio right now. I did some major tweaking in my 2 videos after this one which should be gradually improving! I appreciate the feedback!
Just following up this is my latest video and I believe my voice sounds way more clear, and eliminated the muffled sound (which unfortunately is mostly just my voice) thank you for watching my videos! ruclips.net/video/AKXAK_qsm_0/видео.html
@@cjrhenmusic Thanks for the clarification and keep up the good work !
One of if not the most important and impressive new capabilites in C14 is the ability to use MIDI keyboard "play" as a note entry method to get notes into a clean score. This gives composers a new way to enter notes into a score. Previous to C14 as you stated, playing notes into Cubase rendered such a poor initial score that a ton of manual correction had to be applied. My understanding is that played MIDI to score conversion in the current version of Dorico is not as good as what you get in C14. I am sure the next update to Dorico should address this disparity and also, hopefully add an export function to Dorico. This combined with a Dorico project import function to Cubase with the user controlled option to accept changes to Cubase MIDI based on Dorico notation edits will further enhance integration and interoperability.
You are right on the money, it's strange how Dorico's real time to midi to notation isn't as clean, because I have had it work very successfully but only if I can minimize my latency of my asio driver. That's to say I have observed that the real time playback of midi on Dorico has a considerable delay compared to Cubase. That's not necessarily unexpected as low latency isn't Dorico's intended use case, but I think that is one of the main factors holding real time midi input back on Dorico. I wonder if adding a low latency mode to Dorico to that can be toggled off and on might solve some of that. Thank you for watching!
Oh and Steinberg confirmed in their release notes that Cubase will be adding the ability to open Dorico project files which definitely sounds exciting!
based on responses by one of their folks on another RUclips channel's related video, they are working on these very integration issues. IMHO, the key to the C export to D followed by a D export back into C of a marked up score is how Cubase handles the score edits and their potential effect on the original Cubase MIDI. My suggestion was that there be a modal dialog box added to the Dorico Project import process allowing the user to choose whether or not to have the import of the marked up score to alter the original Cubase MIDI. This empowers the Composer to choose. We'll see if they follow my suggestion. :-}
I like that suggestion a lot! And I will be thrilled if the latency in Dorico gets improved. Right now I get pretty good results but tbh that's only because I have an RME audio interface and can turn my buffer down to 32 and it's still stable haha.
Well done ✈️⭐🙌
How would I get the wings on the repeats?
Hey within the engrave options, navigate to barlines and find the option for "Wings on repeat barlines" there will be an option to enable them! Thank you for watching!
Dorico does not need to be conquered. It is 2nd generation notation software that works very intuitively and is better supported in its use by its developers than any other similar software.
It does however need clickbaity titles haha... Dorico is very intuitive and I am digging into the new Cubase integration which can only make the whole ecosystem stronger, you may enjoy the video and should be out by Friday! Thank you for watching!

It's a hard program to learn still
For me it was hard to get my head around note input, once they key commands sunk in, I found everything was very easy from there on. I have a background working in DAWs so I have a feeling that gives me an edge. What do you think is the biggest challenge with Dorico, might be a cool video for me to make!
Another excellent video! Very informative! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Cool! Just what I needed. One thing I would like to see a vid on is making conductor’s score adjustable per page. If I make an adjustment like rastral size it affects the entire project. Is there a way to make that happen on individual flows without it affecting other flows? Some flows don’t use all of the instruments available and others do. It leaves me with a skinny score using tabloid paper. Thanks
I will look into this, I know by default it's layout dependent, there is probably a way to change it within a layout.

This is pure gold. I'd love to have seen this video seven months ago when I started Dorico. Even now though this is still so very useful. Thank you!!
Hopefully all the brand new users will get to see it! But if you check out my newest tip video I cover slightly more advanced topics and will keep doing so with new videos which will be right at your pace! Thanks for watching!
Only problem I have with your videos is how your pronunciation of Dorico sounds so much like "dorko". Ew... lol
I didn't go to music school to pronounce words correctly lol. I stand by my Pittsburgh accent firmly. Thank you for watching!
@@cjrhenmusic, I beg to differ, sir. While if you are playing an instrument, your pronunciation doesn't matter, if you decide to put yourself in a teaching position like this one, then you have a responsibility. Now, this one is not a big thing. It's just a quirk and a bit funny. It's horrible when someone mispronounces composer names, for example. But a program name that sounds funny now, well, it's peccata minuta.
@josesolismusic I do respect names (although I do struggle a bit) but you are making me realize how bad my region I live in (West Virginia) is for pronunciation haha. Everyone I know says it just... like... me haha. Thank you for watching man I appreciate you!
Note that the tonic accent is on the first syllable : DOrico. So the pronunciation is not that bad 🤷
@@marclarcher7908 yeah, it's just that the second syllable is so weak, that is almost non existent, so it ends up sounding like "dorko". XD It's fine, just sound funny to me each time.
Very useful! Thank you!
Thank you for watching!
Really useful as an "old" Finale user! Thanks a lot!
Glad to be helping out!
Very useful! Now that I've had a couple months to get familiar with the basics of Dorico, I'm finding videos like yours to be helpful in learning new tricks and getting deeper into the software. I've found that, for my main publisher client, I get better results when I uncheck all the boxes in the XML import settings. I think the reason I get good results is that I've created a template for this publisher. I like to open a new project using the template and then import the XML file. Since I left everything unchecked, the XML settings are overridden, and I get something that matches the publisher's house style more closely. I end up with two flows. The first flow has the staff labels already set the way the publisher wants them, so I just copy/paste the imported music into the first flow, then delete the unnecessary flow. I'm still very new at Dorico, so there's probably a more streamlined way to do this, but it seems to be working well.
Hey, honestly when I am doing work copying between software, I do it like you. I make a project template and just paste into it and redo certain elements. Glad Dorico is going well for you and thank you for watching!
thanks for the video. Just learning Dorico over the last week and will be watching anything you put out.
Thank you for watching!
Love your videos; keep them coming.
Thank you! I will be doing more livestreams too!
Thanks! I wasn’t aware of local chords or the ability to hide one of the staves on a grand staff. Awesome!
They are super awesome features, glad I could show them to you!
@9:40 - what are your thoughts between using the manual staff visibility option versus adding or removing a staff in the same menu?
I think they ultimately serve different purposes. I use adding or removing a staff when I am add additional material or optional material to a specific player or part. I use hiding or showing staves when working between multiple different players as setup in the setup tab. Ultimately if you use either to achieve good looking results and create good music, it works, but the way I handle it may be the most logical in terms of how Dorico is thinking behind the scenes. Hope that helps and thank you for watching!
What font are you using for this piece of music? Thanks.
Petaluma which is one of the default Dorico fonts. It has the nice jazz/commercial handwritten look and I use it on everything (even when I shouldn't sometimes haha) Thank you for watching!
I hope Dorico realizes how well you present their product. You may well convert me. I am still opposed to all the key commands and wish Dorico had contextual drop down menus like Finale. I d/l the Dorico Quick Reference Card which is three pages long. Quick seems to be somewhat misleading there. But the Popovers in Dorico reference sheet takes that to a whole new meaning, it is 15 pages long.
As someone who is very used to using different softwares like video editors, DAWs, audio editors and all that. Dorico simply is just lightweight in comparison. I understand the turn off with the pop overs but the jump bar and the fact the pop overs are optional (they are completely coordinated to the right side tool bar which is just like other softwares) splits the difference. I appreciate you watching my videos and I will personally give you tips if you decide to make the Dorico plunge haha. I know one of my friends and professional composers who uses his mouse only in finale coming around to Dorico and starting to really enjoy it. It is an intimidating jump but I hope I can help you along the way if you choose to try it out. Thank you!
@@cjrhenmusic I already bought Dorico so I am interested. I also bought Sibelius which at the moment is winning me over as the prefered notation app for me to go to. But I intend to keep watching any vids you post.
@erniebiggs8343 I like Sibelius and the feature that truly switched me to dorico was all the commercial and jazz notion stuff like slash regions, drum parts, rhythmic cues. Definitely handled better. But I do tell people with a straight face if you want to do very contemporary stuff or simply like the workflow or don't need certain features pick what works best for you. And again thanks for watching and engaging discussions!
