To be honest, I think setting up numbered regions this way is a way too troublesome method. There are various counting options tied to the slash regions themselves, accessible through their properties panel, which make this whole process unnecessary.
@@SebSquonks So there is a big BUT... to that I have found, if you are using slash regions straight up without constant rhythm hits going on, yes just rely on the numbers provided from the slash regions, if you find yourself with 64 bars and every bar has a some kind of rhythmic hit, disabling the numbers on slash regions and just using numbered bar regions will save having to adjust the count on every single slash region individually. This plays into the idea that you set it once in Dorico, then do not have to worry about it later. Realistically, if I need to configure the numbered bar regions since I know what all the settings do, it take 3 to 5 seconds in engraving options to do it. One example of this is in shout choruses in big band where the piano may have all the brass hits shown in their parts. It is easier to just bulk apply 8 bar numbered regions then it is to pick out the 4th and 8th bar slash regions change the starting position which also changes if you make an edit that extends over a bar line.

@@cjrhenmusic I completely understand your thoughts, but I also find that sometimes I want the numbered counts to start again between different sections. This is why I kinda like the fact that you can set up different slash regions, and that they get highlighted with different shades of green. During a solo section, for example, or a bridge, I find it quite useful to be able to just set up a new slash region for drums. I feel that doing so using numbered regions would end up requiring more time, at least personally. Oh, and it could be valuable to address tying the last eight note to the consecutive bar containing slashes!

First, the green actually goes away when you print the part or make it a pdf, the green simply is to show there is a region there when you are editing so you know what to edit. You can hide the green while you are working however by going to the menu bar, under "View" disable "Highlight Slash Region". Under view is where you can show or hide all the system elements that Dorico only displays for editing and not on printed parts such as highlighting the region. I recommend you keep the highlight on though when you work because it makes it easier to identify where slash regions start and stop. As for the bar repeat symbol I believe you are talking about, select a range of bars, press "J" for the jump bar and then type "bar repeat region" and select the option by clicking enter "Create bar repeat region". Once you get a grasp of these regions and why they get special treatment they will super speed up your workflow. Hey so in short, once you do the engraving the way we prefer in Dorico, it becomes quicker, but honestly the initial setup to basically fine tune the settings to the way we prefer requires some time. The end result is being able to work quickly without needing to hide voices and move elements around and change note heads or use plugins (mostly speaking as an ex-Sibelius user haha). I will be providing my big band template I use for free on my website which will drastically speed up your workflow! Soon I will make videos doing big band score deep dives into my arrangements and compositions to explore those various writing techniques and explode/reduce part options. Thank you for your support!
That’s cool man Because I like to sketch in the notation program in a grand staff maybe two Do you copy and paste from the sketch to say Alto 1 and explode into the other horns Or copy and paste say just a lead line Let’s say it’s a thad jones type sax soli how do you enter the voicings at speed I did consider Dorico a few years ago but couldn’t find any videos like yours Great video Final question when you have finished a chart do you or can you save and make it into a template So you can clear out when you start a new project but all your setups chord changes etc remain intact Thanks thanks
So if you input a 4 part line into alto 1, you can click control/cmd X to cut the section to your clipboard and then do an explode paste over the selected staves. You do that by going to edit in the menu bar then paste special and find explode. That's exactly how I write my sax solis too! I will make sure I cover everything else in some videos! @@martinnicklesstentet500I alternately have a dedicated layout on my big band template called "condensed score" that has a grand staff for brass, one for reeds, plus the rhythm section. That's where I do my sketches. (You can setup voice independent playback so you trumpet sounds on treble and bones on bass. you can do the same for the saxes, even making bass up stems tenors and bass down stems baritone) I then have a "working score" that contains all individual parts as well as the sketches. That's where I do copy and explode and such. Lastly, the layout to actually be exported and used is labeled the "reading score". The other two use the same settings as the reading score, so they look pretty good without any tweaking. The reading score barely needs additional work to look professional.
oKay sounds good , one thing I just started my first song It’s a song for two violins How do I apply the “bow markers” ? not sure if that’s the correct term, but the little horseshoe and accent looking mark above the notes.
How do would tie the rhythmic notation hits you set up on the upbeats to the slash on the following downbeat? Also, is it possible to convert regular notation already in the score to rhythmic notation (like in Finale)?

For anyone else wondering these are the steps I take. 1) create a slash voice 2) in the slash voice, notate an 8th note tied to a quarter note 3) go to engrave mode 4) select only the notehead of the quarter note 5) go to the properties panel in the bottom portion of your screen 6) under the "notes and rests" category one of the last options should be "hide stem" 7) hit that toggle, and smash that like button
Hi CJ. Good video. Thanks. An issue I'm having difficulty with is that I'm trying to paste a chord sequence into the next chorus. I Select the bars, then I Copy and Paste into the new chorus but only the slash bars appear. Not the chords as well. How do I do this?
Hey, I suggest you make a select with the select tool and highlight the chords all at once or even the whole region at once. You hold right click and then drag and it makes a rectangle selection. Chords are global and not attached to a staff. There are definitely multiple ways of doing this, this is just what I typically do. Hope that helps.

Using version 5.1 , what version are you using in this video? your video just after 4 min is talking about slash voice and i'm not getting the options you are, they must have moved it. the button you refer to thats the note stem up and stem down simply changes Voice 1 or 2 nothing there about slash notation.
