I’m a Jazz guitarist who has had Finale for years. I want to arrange for a Big Band I belong to. Finale was challenging to learn. You are helping me understand Dorico, thank you.
I am glad I am helping you out. If you are interested, email me at cjrhenmusic@gmail.com and I will send you one of my latest arrangements your band can play and the project file for you to investigate and learn some Dorico techniques from! Thank you for watching!
It definitely is, I think with all the new users from finale, Dorico will pick up some of the last missing features and be the one software that does it all for composers. Thank you for watching!
Thanks for another informative video, Cj. I always had trouble using Speedy Input via Finale. It seemed that every time I launched Finale, I had to tinker with my MIDI config. I basically had to re-select the keyboard each time. I am sure it was something I was doing wrong, but it was very annoying. With Dorico, the MIDI keyboard worked immediately the first time I launched the program. It actually startled me to see notes being inputted to my score, I didn't know what was happening ha, ha, ha! And I second the call to continue your work for the community.
I'm glad midi is working out for you! I am working on my drum notation video! Soon I will also go over some of the cool recording techniques I used for my big band scores I wrote in Dorico. Thank you for your support!
thanks , helpful , took notes. i do a lot with Piano being a piano teacher as well as i work with a church and sometimes need to work with choir templates , occasional flute and Trumpet
@@cjrhenmusic No man, thank you!!! Like many others I’m fully in the Finale->Dorico transition process and despite I’m the guy who read the manuals, you know that this is a really challenging task. Your vids are extremely useful to me 🙏🏾
We have to learn how to walk before we can run is what I think! Now that many users are getting the basics down I thought it was prefect timing to release this! Thank you for your support!
We need something like speedy. That's it. It's not asking too much, is it? It's not about using mouse or not. It's about the most efficient way to input music: Finale's Speedy.
@@cjrhenmusic Yes. But without a grid. And, most importantly: two keys to select the note (up and down). I hate to have to hit a certain key (on any keyboard) to select a note. I want a cursor and up and down keys.
Thank you! As a Finale user for 35 years, this is very helpful in aiding me to improve my efficiency with the software. One thing that I did do is change the key commands that effect the durations. I'm sorry - but 35 years of 5=1/4 note is too much of a habit to break!!!! This little trick may help other Finale users as well - at least you still have some connection with "the old ways".
Changing the duration key commands to suit you sounds smart to me! I will start encouraging other finale converts to try it out. Thank you for watching my video!
Great video! The only thing I wanted to see was inputting lines with lots of rests of various durations. I'm struggling to find the most efficient method of getting those rests when using numpad and MIDI keyboard.
So there are two effective ways, the most effective is do not physically input rests, use the grid to insert notes wherever you want notes even if they are not adjacent to each other. Dorico will automatically input the rests. I recommend you get accustomed to that method it is very convenient once you are use to it! The other option is to click the comma on your keyboard and play any note on your midi keyboard, this will now be inserting rests for whatever rhythmic value you have selected, select the comma again to get out of rest insert mode. I hope that helps you out!
Awesome video, thanks! I'd love to see you work with guitar chord frames. You probably don't do a lot of that in your work. I work with high school students who need to be shown jazz voicings.
Your videos are incredibly informative and helpful. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I write a lot of percussion ensembles and had a love/hate, mostly hate relationship with the way Finale worked with percussion. I am looking forward to your percussion information. Also, quick question, when creating a lead sheet with vocal and guitar chords, is there a way to get Dorico to play the chord from just the symbol above the staff. Thanks again for the help you have provided to all!
Hey my video which is focused on drum sets as noted for combo and big band is almost done! Recording the final clips today. And yes you can enable chord playback for sustained chords and assign what sound plays them. www.steinberg.help/r/dorico-pro/4.3/en/dorico/topics/play_mode/play_mode_chord_symbols_playback_enabling_t.html
Very useful video! I would like to know how to manage properly particellas, 'cause, for example, I change the font in the score title, but is not reflected in the instrument parts. Thanks a lot!
All I did was select each whole note rest in each staff while holding Control (windows) or Command (Mac). This allows you to add to your selection and then I did the paste special explode. I hope that helps and thank you for watching! I have a video coming out soon on note input tips covering extra useful key commands and how to work with voices I think you would enjoy!
You engaged the articulation before entering the note value. In my version of Dorico, I engage the articulation before entering the notes but it doesn't work the same way. The articulation turns off.
Ok I think it might be a setting in preferences under note input and it's set to set after duration, and needs to be set to before. If that is not the issue, cjrhenmusic@gmail.com email me and we could video chat for a few minutes and I'll take a look!
I keep seeing it's faster and believe you but I have also yet to see a single person actually use speedy in context. If you create a video recreating that line at 3:45 with notes, articulations, scoops, slurs, text, and dynamics... I will show both of these to Steinberg to prove speedy is needed.
CJ as a retired College professor I’m amazed how Dorico is so superior to Finale. Thanks for helping me learn. It’s much appreciated.
Dorico definitely has some super cool features! I'm glad I am helping you!
Please continue this Dorico series; you have a great vibe and are very clear at explaining concepts!
Thank you! I plan to continue Dorico tips, get into mixing and Cubase, and start diving into some harmony and composition concepts!
thanks for the video. Just learning Dorico over the last week and will be watching anything you put out.
Thank you for watching!
This video is so educational and useful since I've had to switch to dorico. I love it. Keep up the good work man
Thank you!

Hi Cj!!! I was waiting exactly for this video. Thanks a lot!!!🙏🏾

The thing that makes speedy input speedy is using the typing keyboard to select notes right? And the layout on a numpad?
