THE KATY TRAIL Day 6: Finish in St. Charles, Missouri, Bike Touring America's Longest Rail Trail
Day 6 of Bike Touring The Katy Trail in Missouri, one of America’s best long-distance rail trails. The Katy Trail stretches 240 miles from Clinton to Machens, Missouri. Biked Gaston to Richmond today. (09/13/24) . Very nice trail but very few services or water along the way. I packed 4 liters and used it all. Luckily there is a Dollar General in Losantville where I bought two more liters. Very good trail but let me tell you it ISN'T level by any means! I climbed most of the day and the constant headwind made it worse. I did it though! 52 miles at average of only 8.8 mph. $82 Baymont hotel in Richmond is very good deal!❤

So I had maps that I ordered from OTET and I had the Ride With GPS file on my Garmin but I forgot to change directions on it, so it beeped at me a lot to go northbound instead of the actual direction I was traveling southbound. The road section was super well marketed with signage in that Millerburg section. Where it gets tricky is in Columbus. I'm an urban rider so I just used Google Maps with the bike layer to get through downtown.

thanks for sharing, and responding!! I noticed your bike, and it seems like an off brand. It also you said is steel which is a good thing. The only thing i noticed was that your fork has no braze on\s, and you said it was carbon. that is no good!! I have bikes with a carbon blade, but i really don't like carbon at all. I really don't know why they put a carbon blade on a steel frame bike. that makes no sense to me. Anyhow ,go get you a better bike. May i make a suggestion!! Look, i have several bikes some gravel and some touring. Yes i like steel, and some of my touring bikes are steel, but i also like aluminum. A good aluminum bike made for touring is gonna be a super good bike. And don't listen to all the hype about steel for touring bikes. Yes ,its the best!! but don't under estimate an aluminum touring bike. I mean it will get the job done. I went out and bought me an Ozark trail g-1 gravel bike made for touring and bike packing. please don't laugh, a wal mart bike. yes i know!! But this bike is solid. this bike has been the craze and most talked about bike on da internet, and for good reason!! I know bikes.I went out and bought me one just to try out.The only issue with this awesome gravel bike / touring bike is who build the bike. yes the ideots at wal mart. When i got mine, i had to re adjust the drop bars, and re do the head set/ pump up the tires , and grease the seat tube, then and only then could i roll it out of the store. once i got it home, i rode it and it rode really good, but i had to take it to the bike shop and grease the bottom bracket. Look, here is what you get for 250 dollars/ yes i know!!! internal routing/ index shifting/ a solid aluminum frame 6061 with a steel fork on it with 3 braze ons / on each side plus other braze ons. the bike comes with double wall rims and 36 spokes each wheel. and it has a long wheel base with a kick stand and comes stock with kenda tires. are you kidding me.. Here is what i have done to mine. A new gel saddle/ a new adjustable stem/ a new cassett for climbing gear/ a new rear touring rack. and a new axiom front low rider rack/ new extra bar end tape over the original for more comfort. now this week i am putting a new bottom bracket and new crank set on it. it comes with a 2x drive train. when all complete , i'll put it up against any touring bike out there. I also put a seat post suspenion on it. my total build cost 360 dollars+ 250 for the bike which is a total of 610 dollars. Again, ill put it up against any touring bike out there. Go on line or better yet go on youtube and look at all the videos about thiis awesome bike. Sorry for the long post, but i see that you like to bike a lot like me. go check out the g-1 gravel bike. My nice 2000 dollar carbon fork gravel bike is collecting dust. I am out riding the 250 dollar bike all the time, and if you get one, i garunteee you will leave that other bike in the garage , and you to will be out on your g-1 gravel bike.

We live in not far from the KATY Trail. Wonderful ride. Fall is the best. Summer can be tough. It is hot and humid at times. Herman is wonderful in the fall. There was a time they had yearly rides from Union Mo to Herman Mo. Good vid.

Today I got caught in a storm front with several microbursts on the Freedom Trail near Tallmadge, Ohio. Watching this video in preparation for my OTET ride saved my butt. Thx Denise.

Hi Denise. My wife and I finished the Katy Trail one week ago! Loved your videos. Can you tell me what kind of handlebar bag you use? It looks really useful Thanks

Congrats on finishing the Katy! Thanks for your compliment! The handlebar bag is a Swift Industries Catalyst. I love this bag! It expands nicely and durable. They also have a huge front bag called the Zeitgeist if you need something a bit larger. Swift Industries is an awesome company based out of Portland, OR.
