My name is Arnold, a.k.a. Carnold. On my channel you can follow my car projects and watch car reviews. The star of this channel is my 1994 Lexus LS400 and the starlet - literally - is my 1994 Toyota Starlet. Both are project cars which I want to get into the best shape possible. I also do car reviews: Real Life Car Reviews, I focus on the Japanese and Korean brands.
I work in automotive, but mostly on the theoretical side. Every now and then I like to get my hands dirty. So, amateur mechanic it is. The main subject on this channel is my Lexus LS 400, but I also show other stuff that keeps me occupied. Like engine repairs, my job and some occasional non-car related things. And yes, I do have a thing for Peterbilts. If you like to support the channel, you can buy me a coffee: www.buymeacoffee.com/arnoldsrepairs?new=1

Building a capacitor tester (for a lucky winner!)
I wanted to improve my soldering skills, so I invested heavily in a new soldering station and some practicing kits. In this episode I'm building a capacitor tester that is very useful for my ECU repairs.
Aaand I'm giving one of these capacitor testers away, so watch till the end to see how you can participate!

Nissan Juke Hybrid - Real Life Car Review. Sporty on the outside, comfy on the inside.

The Nissan Juke got a mid-lifecycle update, usually the recipe contains an extrior restyling and some tweaks to the interior tech, but not for the Juke. Nissan left the exterior virtually untouched and completely overhauled the dashboard. The interior is where you spend most of your time driving a car, and that's why Nissan spend their development money on the inside. And it shows! If you want ...
Operation Ariel Saving a 1994 Toyota Starlet EP4

Finally, a new episode of Operation Ariel, my 1994 Toyota Starlet! Not much action in this episode, but a lot of results! In all honesty: I haven't been working much on the Starlet, since it is a daily driver and I can't spend much time on fixing it. Not that it needs a lot of fixing - a 30 year old Toyota is the pinnacle of reliability - but the car has to be up and running every single day. B...

Subaru Crosstrek 2.0 Hybrid Review - Smooth and capable
Is it reliable enough for work commute? What advice can you give to someone who wants to buy a used one?
Yes, it is a reliable bike if you don't tune the engine. If you're buying a used one, ask if the oil changes have been done every 2.500 km, and if the engine has been tuned. Especially the 70cc kits should be avoided. The best way to determine if a bike is worth considering (when you buy a used one) is to take a close look to the appearance: is it clean, are the wheels and spokes clean, is the chain clean and well lubricated. These bikes are reliable as long as they are well kept. Neglect is easy to spot, I would avoid those bikes if you're not technically inclined. But with a little bit of effort, you can turn a half decent bike into a reliable commuter bike.
@Carnold_YT I'm not technically inclined for now but there are not many choices to go after except this one for me. Pretty good advice over all, thanks!
The most important thing, he leaves out before nit picking is that Toyota has been the top on reliability for years and backs it up with a 10 year guarantee. Now lets start again!
Well, it is something that I do mention in every other Lexus / Toyota test.
Cool car,nice video thanks mate

You got it spot on with regards to the brakes, regen, suspension and lights. I’ve also found that you get significant tyre judder whilst manoeuvring at slow speeds with steering on lock…frightening sometimes as it sounds like you’ve hit the wheel onto something.
When manoeuvering at low speeds (pulling out of a parking space and making a 90 degree trun right away) I experienced the same. I recognized it from cars with mechanical all wheel drive. I think it is the diff in the front axle, those can grind pretty bad with the wheels turned into full lock.
I just need such an Oil Temperature measuring device...wäre can i buy it....pleas helf me. Thank you
I have this one: mash-point.nl/product/olietemperatuurmeter-voor-50-125-250-cc/ This one from Louis is the same and a bit cheaper: www.louis.de/artikel/t-t-oeltemperatur-direktmesser-fuer-diverse-fahrzeuge/10035370?disableRecommendedDomainPanel=true

1.0 boosterjet hybride?
The new Swift with the 1.2 mild hybrid, the Z12E.
@Carnold_YT ok so no 1.0 boostejet hybride engine anymore? Because til 2022 years i found the 1.0 and 1.2 hyrbid models but dont know of the 1.2 is also a turbo engine. Because the 1.0 has 112hp and the 1.2 83hp?
@@anthonyg87 The new model generation is only available with the new Z12E engine, which I featured in the review video: ruclips.net/video/O-IbcE75Tyk/видео.htmlsi=4PNdM6A3RwASa8tg&t=271 The BoosterJet engines are no longer available for the Swift. They were fantastic engines, if you can get your hand on a low-mileage Swift with a BoosterJet engine, take your chance!

Good luck! 😉
Nicely done. I am also learning electronics, and I now want also to give it a try for this project 🙂

Thanks for the video! It's helpful to see what went wrong with the circuit and the subsequent steps taken to fix it, so novice engineers like me can learn from it! Have a nice day!
Thank you for watching!
My LS400 is showing brakes red warning but sensors and pads are new. I suspect it is a capacitor issue with the ecu or the speedometer… thank you for sharing your beautiful ls400 videos. Congratulations!!!
How is the brake fluid level? That also triggers a warning light.
@ Yes, you are correct but it triggers another warning light, this one is like an exclamation but mine is like a circle with pads…. Thank you very much
@@rutopovi This is how you can check and fix your brake wear sensors, I hope it is helpful: ruclips.net/video/lixWGjc_EVA/видео.htmlsi=GsH5GI99Pr7bCi9v&t=1638
@@Carnold_YT Thank you very much. I already saw this video in the past. Just in case I put an electrical bridge, shortcut in the connectors of the two pads sensors….so resistance is cero under the ecu point of view. My plan is to follow the sensor wiring to the ecu (although I don’t know where these cables should be connected) and find if cero ohms looses somewhere…. I would like to know if it goes directly to the main ECU or to another small ecu …for example abs control ecu….lol lol…if it exists… I need to check the ecu pin out……
@@rutopovi I have to look that up, but I am pretty sure that it goes directly to the instrument panel. The brake wear sensor does not go to the ABS ECU - I will look this up for you. Maybe I can send you a scan of the diagrams. Just email me on arnold@carnold.nl
Thanks for the shout out 😂. Good skills, but I fear you may have an influx of LS400 repairs to do now from other subscribers and people browsing RUclips 😆
We'll see what happens Mike, maybe one day I end up running a Lexus-ECU empire 😉
what is the problem before?
The initial problem was engine knock. I disassembled the engine to inspect the crankshaft. I rebuilt the engine using new gaskets, this failed head gasket was in the gasket kit.
After I watch the Video, I'll email a critique. (Pointing all of the resistors the same way has been my way of doing the inserting for 50 years, BRAVO!)
I'm sorry I missed watching it live - I would have LOVED to comment! It's good to test things for the future. Noise from heater is in (quiet enough) in the back ground. I'd prefer in the future that the video was not in vertical (Tik-Tok) mode.
Is it more fuel efficient than a Toyota Yaris Hybrid?
The Yaris is slightly better in terms of fuel economy. However, the Swift is much, much less complicated and more affordable to buy and to maintain.
Car rear windows get splashed and dirty, not just rained on. A rear washer/wiper is essential and its omission on this car is a big mistake. Also the partition between the driver and front passenger makes it somewhat claustrophobic for the passenger, and a bit awkward to reach the cup holders. It could also be a barrier if it was necessary to exit through the passenger door in the event of an accident damaging the driver's door. It's totally unnecessary.
From a practical point of view, the smaller Yaris Cross is the better car in my opinion.
Cool video
Thank you!
Is the molding on the front window reused? I also want to replace the glass, but I don't have the parts for the molding.
Yes, I have reused it, but I think it is the original molding from factory. So it has been out 2 times already. I need to replace it when I get the new windscreen. Thanks for watching!
@ I was surprised that it was reusable. My Celsior's heat reflective glass has deteriorated and will not pass inspection, so I need to replace it. thank you
I'm impressed with the review-it's one of the better ones I've read. I'm considering either a Swift or a Mazda 2. Which do you prefer, and which is likely to hold up better in the long run in terms of reliability?
That is a good question, I think the Mazda will do very well too in the long run. The SkyActiv engines are very well built too. I think it is a matter of taste, the designs of both cars are very different. From an economical and practical view, I think the Swift wins, with better fuel economy and slightly roomier interior. But the Mazda2 is a generation older and doesn't have all the electronic nannies. And there is much to say for that. Thanks for watching!
It doesn’t eat tyres - even in track use. I’ve done two track days and a sprint and the tyres looks good as new. No doubt you can eat them if you use drift mode - which on a press car probably happens a lot. The car is fine on the road. For days to day I run it in ECO mode, which still gives reasonable performance - but when the mood takes me I turn on the gears and the ‘engine’ and put it in sport mode for a quick blast - and to be fair, you then do need to know what you are doing.
I should have pointed that out more clearly - normally the car is very easy to drive and quite comfy. It can eat tyres when you're in a more powerful mode (and have no self control). Thanks for your comment!
Hey Arnold! I have the pre-facelift version of this car which I think is what brought me to the channel a couple of years ago, as I saw your review of that version 😁. I find it nice enough to drive tbh, its powerful enough for day to day use, comfy enough and cheap to run but that gearbox and the drivetrain noises do take some getting used to when pushing it. The updated dash looks good, much faster and modern looking too. I would miss the circular vents though hehe. Thanks for the review, as always
Thank you so much for watching Mike! We are considering the pre-facelift for the future replacement of our Prius. I've always been a Nissan owner, had 5 Nissans at one time. I wouldn't mind owning a Juke as a family car.
Thankyou
Continuation of my previous comment on the FIPG on the water pump seal; Definitely going to use just a little FIPG around the seal, the "cheap insurance" is definitely worth not doing this process again lol. I just finished disassembly, and boy, that was more difficult than I imagined (previous owner/mechanic did a horrendous job on the FIPG/RTV application, it was all over the place and definitely made its way into or through the engine... not happy about that discovery. But I've got a huge tube of Aisin coolant FIPG, so might as well be safe than sorry)
FIPG is an amateur mechanic's best friend - as we don't get paid by the hour 😉
To date the best review I've seen, congratulations. Where can I find your engine article?
Thank you, that is nice to hear! Here is the link to the article (Online version, in PDF): carnold.nl/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Nieuwe-Suzuki-Z12E-driecilinder_-beproefde-techniek-voor-de-eeuwighei_-www.amt_.nl_.pdf And here is a translated (by Google) in PDF: carnold.nl/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Suzuki-Z12E-article.pdf
I put aluminum antisieze on my spark plugs. I had one sticking on the way in hopefully it doesn't turn out i have an issue. I measured it and compared to my other plugs to verify i was installed correctly. It checked out so fingers crossed lol.
I think a little bit of anti seize goes a long way. Especially when the old plug was seized, the threads possibly are lightly damaged from overtightening. A small lick of anti seize can prevent further damage. I removed my plugs once after this episode and they came out fine. Thanks for watching Mike!
Something nobody seems to mention is that research shows us that the vast majority of journeys worldwide are less than the electric range of this car, which makes it extremely efficient for most people and means you're not carrying a huge expensive battery you rarely use and if you do deplete it it is fast to recharge or you have the option to use the engine to give you a better range than most current electric vehicles. I believe rotary engines are also easily converted to run on alternative fuels. A downside not mentioned is more expensive servicing compared to pure electric and higher oil consumption of the rotary engine design, synthetic oil isn't cheap. Finally, it appears that this vehicle is currently being offered with very generous discounts in the UK at the moment, which makes it now look like an attractive proposition.
In my experience, every PHEV is capable of doing my daily commutes completely as EV. They really work well!
We got now the lightest rims possible for the Starlet (4,4kg/rim): the VW Lupo 3Litre/Audi A2 rims made by Fuchs: 4.5x14 Et38, Leichtbau-Schmiederad 34754 (OE-Nr. 6E0 601 025 D). 👌 With Maxxis Mecotra3 175/60 (200€ for 4).
What are your experiences with these wheels and tyres?
@@Carnold_YT the rims: before we had 13" Toyota steel rims (about 7 kg/rim): now the forged aluminum/magnesium-rims are 14“ and 4,4 kg/rim. Feeling: swifter, more precise in corners - at the same time they don't seem so loud and dang-dang-dang on bad roads. (But this maybe too comes from the new tyres (the old ones were vredestein quadtrac four-seasons, about 8 years old).) Tyres Maxxis: very good in corners, very easy to control (cornering by sound ;-). And they should be good in wet conditions.
@@taymot2131 Thanks! Isn't it amazing how much those small changes can do for a car? And it doesn't cost a fortune too.
@@Carnold_YT Yesss - it's the shoes of the car! In Germany you can get the 4 Fuchs rims from 150€ onward (when they were new in 2001 the cost a crazy 1.300€ 🤣).
almost certain with that type of water pump/gasket you don’t use RTV/FIPG because there’s no channel for it to seal into, leading to improper fitment or oozing of the gasket material into places it should be. going to do this service myself without the FIPG, we’ll see how it goes
You are right that RTV isn't required, however, I apply a thin coat to make sure it fills in minute scratches. In my experience these 30 year old cars have been in all kinds of workshops where good working methods aren't the standard. Like prying with screwdrivers between mating surfaces. That why I call it 'cheap insurance' - a little bit of RTV goes a long way in filling op these scratches. After all, it is a pressurized system. Thanks for your comment!
@@Carnold_YT you’re welcome, thank you for your reply! makes complete sense and i understand those scratches now that i’m disassembling, easy to create especially on aluminum. my ‘92 sc400 has 150k miles on the odometer and i don’t think anybody has even opened the lower timing covers. pretty sure the deepest anybody has been is the distributors & rotors. (timing belt looks new too, 1uz’s are my favorite and just goes to show how well Toyota did with the engine)
@Jack-jw3rd I envy you, working on a 1UZ in a SC400... In the LS you barely have space in front of the engine to work. That's why I remove the radiator to create some work space. I was amazed by the amount of room for activities in the engine bay of an SC 400. Good luck with your project!
@@Carnold_YT thank you! i still removed the radiator anyways, gives me enough room to get an air gun down by the crankshaft. however, i can literally stand in my engine bay now lol, its pretty nice
Beautiful results!
Thanks Joe, I'm stoked with the 'new' wheels 😊

Yes, it is.
I like the Starlet, and had one for a short time ages back. A very simple car, but all the better for it (and mechanically bulletproof when you look after them). Is this your daughters daily car did you say? Good on you for getting decent tyres, its definitely something I never, ever take for granted either! Thanks for posting and as always, best wishes!

Het laten vervangen is a 70 euro per uur zo,n 6 uur.
1st to appreciate this update - thanks for showing the detailed control functions. As a motorcycle racer I strongly prefer pulling-up for selecting the next higher gear, even when it's just a sound effect !
Same here Joe. Same with gear-selector levers for automatic transmissions that have a manual function. In my opinion you need to pull them for an upshift and push for a downshift. Very few manufacturers get this right.
@@Carnold_YT My LS-400 is so quiet I have (MANY more times than I wanted to) tried to start it while it was already running, and grinding the starter gear. So I'd really like a "fake" V-8 engine sound generating device, or at least an engine-Idling one...
@@joeteejoetee That even happened to the Toyota-engineers who developed the car!
@@Carnold_YT Wow that is great insider knowledge up there! I _dread_ needing to replace my starter motor.........some day.......
Thanks for the upload 👍
No problem 👍
Great review, lot's of interesting detail.
Thanks for watching, much appreciated!
What functionality are you referring to when you say its not suitable for public roads? I assume n drift and use of launch control (obviously) and ngb?
Yes, those are some of them. When you enter the 'N' menu on the center screen, you'll find about five settings that come with a disclaimer that says not to use them on public roads. Basically these are the settings that make the car go sideways more than going straight ahead. I'll do a short follow up video on your question.
@@Carnold_YT thanks. Would appreciate a video on that 👍
@@davidd7713 I actually just uploaded it, here is the link: ruclips.net/video/zJkkSrpyg08/видео.htmlsi=zyw2_MI1XDNfEV77
