Vienna's (New) Tipping Problem
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.День назад
Tipping in Vienna is a hot topic! Traditionally, a small tip showed appreciation for good service. But is this changing? The Issue: - Some feel tipping is becoming mandatory, not a way to say thanks. - Takeaway spots are asking for tips too, which some find surprising. Why the Change? - Minimum wage might not be enough for a good living, especially with inflation. - Fewer people want these jobs...

    Sadly, it has gotten noticably worse after the pandemic. I think they are short-staffed, but frequencies on the U-Bahn and the trams have been reduced significantly. It's quite annoying to wait 10min for a metro or up to 20min for a tram and they are also very full because of that. Another thing I want to point out is that it is not difficult to have the largest transportation Network in Austria. Vienna is by far the biggest city in Austria, it is home to almost one fourth of the population of the country. It's also the only city with a subway (excluding Serfaus which isn't really a subway, more like a people mover). While Viennas transportation network is great, it could (and should) still be improve

    You probably should've used different comparisons. Wien is 7x larger than the next biggest city in Austria. There's nothing surprising about them having the longest public transportation system in the country. You should've compared Vienna to cities like Hamburg of Barcelona.

    So we just got back from our trip - which we had a couple days in Vienna at the beginning and end. I was surprised that the last 3 restaurants we went to - every server showed/asked if we wanted to add a 10% or our choice of tip. I liked this approach as compared to a restaurant sneaking in a 'service fee'. Plus the service we received at all of the restaurants was very good.

    the housing costs in most districts are not 1200-20%= € 1000,- for a 2 bed appartment, thats definitely not true. Its far cheaper in most districts. you should definitely not sum up your expensive costs from online ordering to normal living costs. if you cook it by yourself, you need less money and you have a better quality in food.

    An useful tip for using the metro more comfortably at crowded times is: don't just stop right at the entrance of the platform to wait, but keep walking until reaching a less crowded spot and wait there. Often, huge crowds of tourists and "lazy" people want to hop on in one single spot while the rest of the train is almost empty. Also, look for empty spots in the train as it rolls in. With these two "hacks", I almost always find a not so crowded space in the vehicle, even during rush hour.

    Hi! Chef/waiter/manager for ~20 years here, small neighborhood pub/restaurant in 7th district, right next to Volkstheater. While PR is generally appreciated, past few years' overboarding online "spot hidden gems" rush has financially killed many such places. And we're struggling aswell, trying to fight the tide. That's why, if someone shows up with something even remotely resembling a camera team, I ask them to either shut that off and enjoy their stay 'offline' (signed!), or point them towards 1st district which is focused on - and happily living off - tourists for decades.. As you alluded to, tipping is out of control here in North America. I visit New York and I would be taking my life in my hands if I did not tip at least 20 percent. One interesting aspect of this is who actually gets the tip. I make a point of paying the tip in cash to the server. On a number of occasions, I would get hostile looks from the restaurant managers on my way out because presumably, they had seen the zero tip on the bill (that I paid by card) and then the question is, did the server tell the manager that I had paid them the tip in cash? If not, this suggests to me that the manager is probably skimming the tips and the server does not see all of it, or in some cases any of it. I don't think the wait staff are necessarily the villains in all cases. Indeed most of them are just trying to survive. I am visiting Vienna in late November of this year, my first trip, and I am curious to see what the waiters are like. One thing I have found when it comes to wait staff is that usually, the staff in the hotel restaurants are very good. This has been my experience in the past.

    • @KhyatiPuria
      @KhyatiPuria 9 дней назад

      Servers definitely aren't to blame for tipping. I know restaurants have a tough time making money, but the way tipping works now just feels broken and out of date. Maybe there's a better way to do things that's fair for everyone. I actually really like the concept in Scandinavia. Just include it into the price and make sure you can pay the wages of your staff without having to depend on tips

    I tip on the experience that I had while dining in the restaurant. When I am greeted with a smile and and talked to like a human being and treated with respect and my meal was good, than by all means you will get a tip. If I am treated like just another person expecting to tip me for whatever service I get, sorry but you don't deserve it. When i visited New Zealand, there was no expectation of a tip, in fact, I was looked at wierdly because I wanted to tip them. TIPS = Too Insure Proper Service.
