When we were living in Vienna 2001-2005, the back entrance to Karlsplatz was an area where drug/alcohol users would hang out. They would hassle the women who passed by there. Some of my friends lived near there and couldn't avoid the area. There was always a strong police presence near our home in the First District. We could almost always see at least one policeman. They would patrol in pairs, and one of them would be carrying a fully-automatic firearm. However, I doubt that most people even noticed that they were there, unless they needed to ask for directions. I was aware of them mainly because I work a lot with the folks who provide security for facilities. We felt safe in Vienna, except for the few times there were anti-US demonstrations in our area. As an American, it was scary to walk past a person carrying a "Death to America" sign less than 100 meters from our front door. The "high crime" areas in Vienna would probably be considered some of the safest areas in US cities. There are areas in my city where I am uncomfortable going, even during the day. Muggings and shootings happen frequently here. The low crime rate is one of the things I miss about Vienna.
Yeah we tried to put it into relation as much as possible. Vienna is definitely far away from any serious crime issue. However it has been our priority to keep our visitors informed! Not all neighborhoods are safe at any time.
You are right on! This area is nothing compared to places in the US where homelessness is everywhere and druggies are walking around like zombies. I lived in NYC, Seattle and Honolulu and locals here in Favoriten do not know what real crime and low quality of living really is. All they do is complaint about the littlest things. Its a joke!
Just returned from 6 nights in Vienna, stayed a 2 monute walk from the Troststraße underground and would go to Reumannplatz for breakfast occasionally and at nighttime for a kebab before hoping back on the underground one more stop. Whereas the place was very very busy late at night, noisey and with a few dodgy looking characters, never did I feel unsafe or threatened. People kept themselves to themselves and we were never bothered, approached or hassled once. Vienna as a whole felt extremely safe, and I really enjoyed my time there.
I love that area! Reumanplatz with the beautiful Amalienbad, the Antoniskirche and Victor Adler Markt are so interesting and great. Never felt dangerous!
even before I watch this, obviously, I dont live in Vienna (yet 😢), but over last couple yrs, I would spend entire days wondering around the city, literally every district, sometimes walking through neighborhoods, whatever suited my route or fancy... mostly throughout the day but sometimes also in the dark... not once have I felt like ok this is a spot I would avoid (well, maybe some when there is dark but thats in literally every city), or that I would feel unsafe, looking behind my back and yes, I am aware of the fact that I am a fairly big dude (around 185 cm and 115kg, usually with a face looking as if I was seeking my next victim lol), which of course usually helps to deter most minor threats... so I am aware that if I was a slim-built woman, the experience would most probably be different in some areas but still... if you behave ok/nice and follow common sense, in most cases you should be fine
Living here +30 years and never ran into a dangerous situation. So yes I agree - Safety is almost a given here in Vienna and we take it almost for granted. However I have to say based on the experience I also know which areas to avoid during night time. So it's important to educate every tourist and newcomer to explore informed.
Thanks for the heads up. When I was looking for accommodations in Vienna, the Airbnbs around Reumannplatz and Keplerplatz seemed suspiciously inexpensive. That said, I would still go by to try a Döner at Ferhat Döner. Long lines of locals in front of a restaurant usually mean good eating.
As long as you avoid late hours it is possibly good bang for buck since it has a very fast connection to the center. It is also relative to what you compare it too, I would say cities like Prague are currently safer than Vienna overall, but Vienna is million miles safer than Brussels for example.
I think the title, with its routes from the identical titles of mass media articles, has 2 main reasons: 1.) Austria is and was allways a very, very safe place. In Vienna the objective level of danger is still very, very low compared to other cities with more than 2 million inhabitants. So: An Austrian from the countryside would maybe feel unsafe in these spots you mentioned. But ask people from big cities around the world! Would they believe, that your pictures came from "Viennas most dangerous neighbourhood"? 2.) For the autochthonous people living in the mentioned area not only the subjective feeling of security changed, and it´s not surprising that they regret this developement.
When I was a student I lived in Vienna and I still go there often to visit friends and go out, and I have never considered this area unsafe, I have been there so many times and sometimes later at night. The places where I did feel unsafe at night were the big train stations, because people can buy alcohol in shops that stay open longer, and there are usually lots of drunk people. The only place I have seen drugs openly sold is around the Danube Canal, around the rave clubs. I have to be honest and say that the most likely reason for this undeserved reputation of this place is that the Viennese feel more unsafe around people whose language they don't understand than around people who do real harm or verbally abuse others while intoxicated.
Thank you for your clear and unexcitedly video about these area of Favoriten, where the medias wrote negative things, as if they didn't know it before. Some places in the 10th district were always problem zones - it's not new. You can read about this even from the time of the old monarchy. I know people which worked there in a rescue station years ago and they told me that they had average about 12 missions per night (casualties because of stabbings, shooting etc.). But as you mentioned the 10th district is a large district with a lot of different areas and some are unfortunately such hotspots.
Thanks for your video. I've had some of the best Turkish food in Vienna around Reumannplatz. To emphasize the 10th district's "hugeness", I think it's also worth pointing out that the following are also in Favoriten: the Bohemian Prater, the cultural centre in the former Anker bread factory, Kurpark Oberlaa, and the Wienerberg-Wienerbergteich green space.
Thanks for the video, we were planning to stay near the train station at a place like Leonardo or Novotel to catch an early morning train but since it’s so close to shady streets, I think we will opt for further away like Holiday Inn Vienna City and take a cab.
The area around the central station is completely newly built and also a lot of corporate offices. The situation there is completely different than Reumannplatz or Keplerplatz. You will feel save close to central station.
as a woman who on top looks good (Slavic), I don't feel safe in particular areas in Vienna. Guys writing "it's safe" here feels like mockery to me. I can't tell you how often groups of men double and triple checked me, even approached me. I don't want multiple stranger men approach me. One is already shady, but multiple? Come on, guys!
Funnywise yes. In 2015 our hotel was near LAX and first night we went to a Chilies restaurant in Inglewood at 10 pm. Nothing bad happened but I clearly felt that we stepped into a different neighborhood 😅 Puria
I worked there. When we stayed longer, even the female workers walked to the subway station at night and nothing ever happened. There are some immigrants dealing drugs and fighting between themselves. Very very rarely other persons get involved. I´m still there at night (around midnight) when I walk home from a buddy I use to drink with everytime totally pissed. There are still sausage parlours open for a munchie.
Uuuh😍😍Damak is one of the best Turkish Restaurants I've ever been. Their Food is SO Delicious 🤤🤤😍. Such a great place to have Brunch on Sunday for example 🥰
We were there for three days, as you said during the day no problems, although I have to admit that we also did not encounter any problems during the late evening hours.... I met more "interesting" characters in the 15th and 13th Districts, in broad daylight
Interesting question. It's been nearly a century since I last spent an early morning at Schwedenplatz after a night out. But I can't recall ever feeling unsafe while standing there, enjoying my after-party Käsekrainer. Best, Puria
ooh, I will absolutely go to that stall with oriental plates, buy some for myself and for my mom as well, she would love those :) ... that dragon fruit also looks nice, gotta try it :)
@@KhyatiPuria btw till what time does the market operate? I was thinking of going there and getting some plates for me and my mom, but I usually get done at plasma center at around 2 pm, so I was wondering if I could make it there in time to have a proper look :))
Every place has areas that are less salubrious, just look at crime figures and if an area is known for drug dealing it's perfectly valid to tell people about it so don't know why people get so het up about it. But this does bring a big issue as it all depends on your audience. The people living there want all these great things from other cultures as it's what happens when people migrate around over the years but when you are a tourist you will often go to the things that are the local food/drink etc. Why would I travel 1000 miles to have a kebab? As you point out you didn't see many tourists, so it becomes a matter of is the place not so well policed etc BECAUSE of the lack of tourists? And that is something that needs to be addressed as well.
Thank you for your amazing input! In our experience, today's tourists are looking for more than just the top 10 local attractions. They want to immerse themselves in local life, understand how minorities are treated, and see how these communities have integrated into society. As the world continues to evolve, we believe these experiences play a significant role in shaping a city's reputation. That's why we've decided to also highlight these so-called "problem zones" to our audience. To address your question: "Why would I travel 1000 miles to have a kebab?" Some of the best curries I've had were in London. Some of the best tacos I've enjoyed were in the "homeless people infested neighborhoods" of Los Angeles and San Diego. The best falafel I've tasted was in the "shady" neighborhoods of Paris. So, why is it seen as negative if people travel to Vienna or Berlin to have their "best kebab"? Migration enriches the cuisine. We're not suggesting skipping the Schnitzel in favor of Kebab But if you're craving a great kebab, Vienna has some excellent options. At the same time, our goal is to equip visitors with the knowledge and awareness they need to explore these "unknown" neighborhoods confidently and safely. We want every tourist to leave Vienna having discovered more than just the usual hotspots, without ever feeling they’ve put themselves at risk. We hope you’ll continue supporting us in this mission to turn every average Vienna visitor into a well-informed "Educated Explorer." Together, we can ensure that travelers gain a deeper understanding of the city while enjoying new experiences safely. Best, Puria
