The historic Thornhill Estate was the home of Missouri's second governor Frederick Bates and was built in 1819. It is part of Faust Park, a park created in 1968 to house historic structures from the area. It is open to the public for free. The trail is called the Governor Bates Trail. I mistakenly called it the General Bates Trail in the video.

This is NOT DeSoto Missouri, although Desoto IS the last town you go through if heading south on HWY 21 to this park..... Blackwell Missouri is what the mailing address would be.... and it's in Washington County when DeSoto is up in Jefferson County... I lived 2 miles south of this park for 12 years.... It's a nice place... Or was... Haven't been down that way in awhile.
I hike that trail often, I believe the blue flowers are Stinging Nettle
The lucky dog was owned by Boots He lvey her son Rick died diveing off that bridge hit the only hugh rock cracked his head in hafe..Tim Kenny and I shot pool there behide the walls was gambling tables when The river would flood we find boats and sneak in and party spent a Summer working for Boots paying off what we drank.. sure got into alot of trouble took me years to sober up..
I'm going to thank you,for showing my old home I grew up there in the 68 til 75 that park was a parking lot for the old Morse mill pavilion, As kids we jumped off that old bridge use to hunt and found many of old stiles that old timing cook shine..it's know for being an outlaw town ..the mill plantation slave quarters covered the West side of the river..that was penny gerenal feed store that was set a fire in 80s the river use to much higher, and very well know to transport boot legged whiskey to times beach in the twenty..the post office was attached to the hotel as kids we found a lot of collectibles in the tunnel to the ice house..the state came in and burnt down the two parovilions because of all the lawlessness..that stair case was a dock leading up to lady's of the night..the Red House.. the town had a lot of Ghost things happen there.. wish I've taken more pictures myself that bridge holds a lot of history.. Thank You..never thought I'd miss that place again
The story of Times Beach is unreal. I lived in St Louis during this stuff
nice little town.
As a kid, we could drive over the warren truss bridge. It still had a deck on it back then. We would drag race on the old road. And drive through the abandoned streets.
The bird feeder pole and slope stabilization behind the modern visitors center was my Eagle Scout project in 2012. I hope it's still there.
You did a good job on this. I've been to Castle Wood a few times and it is an awesome park. The only dark moment in my history had a friend drown
I grew up in St.Clair and visited Meramec State Park many times. There are many caves around the park. Several of us would explore them as far back as we could go. Crawled in some places. Other places had mud up to our shins. This was back in late 60's early 70's.
Is it me, or does this guys voice sound like the killer in Silence of the Lambs?
I drive by this every day. At the moment the bridge is closed and im guessing is slated for demo.
No idea there was so much history on the other side of 44 from six flags. Thank you for sharing! I drive near here somewhat often, I will have to check it out.
Thank you! Keep in mind the bridge is closed now so you’ll have to drive through Eureka and take West Main Street there.
@ Not too surprising, that bridge looks like it’s on its last support beam in the video. I normally take 109 North towards Chesterfield airport so it’s not far out of my typical path.
waterfall s ?
looks like a good place to dump some used motor oil
Heres a little back story . When 6 Flags came to town Allenton would have gotten revenue from taxes and would have grown on its own . But ! Eureka promised the folks there infrastructure like water and sewer , and police protection if they let Eureka annex them . Well they ran sewer to parts of town but unfortunately it was only a 6 inch pipe so you couldn't tie more than 5 or 6 houses on it or there would be backup problems. They never planned on doing anything for Allenton except getting rid of us . Politicians and land developers are the scum of the earth .
Yeah , we lived behind Joe Howell , who lived in the old school house for 12 years . Until this jerk of a developer wanted the town for a mall ! Everyone sold out and 24 years later nothing . Oh yeah the developer was a crook and Eureka actually bought everyone out . We loved living there and still miss it . If any of our old neighbors are reading this hello from Ron Duff !
i have great memories of the park from back in the 1990s, before they built all those wooden stairs and walkways. great place for hiking around. lots of 'ruins' scattered all over the place if you wander about off trail. i used to go up there every week for years, it was one of my favorite places. thank you for posting!
We used to go down there to smoke pot. It’s in Sunset Hills, not Kirkwood.
Awesome and educational vid. Thank you. Grew up camping there since the early 1960's
Thank You sir.
if you park there you can ride a bike a short distance to powder valley and then ride back across the river to unger park then to fenton park george winter park and mini ha ha park
U missed the cave, from the last over look (ur were pretty much on top of it) go left on the trail.. like 100 feet or so it'll split go to the right. Ull see it
I have very distinct memories of walking through here with my mom as a kid, its so sad that it is gone
This mall was literally my childhood, we stopped going after 2020 because it was too depressing. I just went in 2023 to the cheesecake factory and now it's all gone
It's do sad that its demolished now
I really appreciate your videos. The places you feature are all a part of our metro area. Ending with the river is a nice touch. Keep up the good work!
FIRST Babler State Park is in WILDWOOD Missouri and has a TRAIL called Centaur. Get your headlines correct! If you were from here you would KNOW this
If you look at all the newspapers from back then, they have the area as Centaur. Even the museum at the park has pictures that say Centaur on it.

The first building you say is the visitor center is not built by the ccc, I grew up next to the park and in the 80’s in that spot was a log cabin and was very small. That was the visitor center built by the ccc, that new visitor center wasn’t there in the 80’s.
@@justlookingaround sorry about that! I had a feeling it was rebuilt.
Suggestion that you get a metal detector and go over the SandBar with the metal detector cuz there was a lot of shipwrecks along the river there and you might get some Treasures
I once listened to a Beck song once
@the 7:08 mark sand bar/ gravel bar, I was taking my daughters for a stroll in 2018(i believe) and saw a guy and a girl on it. I decided to stop and take in the view before me, when the guy dropped down on one knee and proposed to her. I snapped a picture to remember the moment. It was really neat. 😊
That was my mother’s sisters uncle wife’s house.
Y'all are fucking dumb, every drowning that has ever happened there was from people who just jumped in the river no knowing there was a danger. Swim where you want. Bunch of fucking Karens.
I love your videos keep it up! It’s invaluable history.
The first idea on the tombstone in German is that those who die in the Lord are blessed: " Blessed are the deaths that come to the Lord." Good video.
Famous Barr! What a wonderful mall Chesterfield was. I met my first girlfriend there. In the 80s I worked at Famous Barr Clayton, pre-galleria. The Clayton location was a boutique store with higher-end departments and ceilings that must have been 15 feet high. I sold women's shoes and made about 9% commission. You had to have a good memory as you were not allowed to write any orders down and women buy lots of shoes. You also had to climb ladders and catwalks in order to get the requested shoes for customers. There was also a tea room at that location as well as a smaller restaurant which I believe was called the Soup Con for some strange reason. Perhaps it had to do with the French Onion soup which had been available at Famous Barr for as long as I can remember. Good video. Thanks for sharing it.
We used to have a rope swing on the other side of the river on the trail you just walk down and the rapid we’re strong the river was deeper on the other side in late 60 and early 70
Favorite biking trail.
Along the trail is a long gone gravel mill, very little remnants remain however there is a Google map labeled shipwreck on the Meramec river. It's a converted barge that can be explored when the river is low.
In the 70's and even they some of the 80's Valley Park and especially Peerless Park were like the wild west. Then you had Times Beach down the highway that was even more fun. That old bridge was creepy though. A friend of mine was living in the Grove and lost his house in the 93 flood. Oh and the Raceway and 44 Drive-in were there.
I met Marilyn. After 1982 there was another flood I don’t remember the year. I was a mobile feeding supervisor for the Red Cross. Even tho they weren’t flooded we would go feed the people in the temp housing just to help them out. Living conditions weren’t good just a bunch of bunks. They did let me drive past the sign and into the neighborhood it was very spooky. Looked in a few windows, which we weren’t supposed to do and it looked like people were living there. Plates on the table books on the coffee table etc. I’ll never forget it.
There is so much more to see go down town we’re I live a lot more to see it was a good place to grow up lots of friends small town living
We climb on that bridge all the time in the 60 had a friend drown there never swim by a bridge ina river
The town has a lot of history ww.valley park
I lived in Twin oaks as a child in the 80s. I feel like it was a magical time back then. The old water tower was at the end of my road. My old house was #9 golden oak. The neighborhood was so small that at 5 years old we could go outside and play by ourselves. I lived there until about 1987.
It is sad what has happened to the boy scouts.
Hamilton furnace was not a lime kiln, It was an Iron furnace.
I take this quiet short cut to eureka but never new the history This is the second one of your videos I’ve seen and it’s nice seeing and to hear about areas I’ve grown up around Keep it up thank you
